View Full Version : What if the Guardian had a chance to perform a killing blow?

Among the fighter classes, the guardian is supposed be the one the more dedicated to the work with weapons. He shall be the most skilled, the most able using them.

It's quite true, when you consider that most of the times when he tries to hit a target with his weapons he is successful ; I saw many Assassins that should have been impressive with their weapons (due to their DPS bonuses) but because they were missing their target too often, weren't so effective.

However, I feel this class a bit below other fighter types. And even if it can be discussed, and that we can say that there will always be one class to consider being on the top and another at the bottom, I was wondering if the guardian couldn't have a special trick that would mark him as being especially potent in weapons handling, showing that he his the real master of them.

As EQ 1 offered the passive ability by an AA of a final blow directed on a fleeing mob below 10% of hit points (if I remember it well), I think a guardian should have this ability at creation. Even more, a guardian would - in my mind - have a 0.5% chance each blow that hit a mob to instantaneously kill it. Adjusting this value depending on strength of the creature fighted (from 1% with vvv creatures to 0.1% ^^^ for heroic ones) it would give the guardian an appraised mark, that would distinguish himself from other fighter types, without unbalancing the game.

What do you think about this idea?

Lorewise for the class I think this would be awesome...but balance issues arise when this comes into play...even at the slightest hint of "one shot kills" the servers would be FLOOOOOODED with Guards all aiming for the chance at that one shot kill dream...balance wise you'd either have to offer every other class that ability with even spell damage coming into play with Wizards...balance wise it would kill the game tipping the scales as people would all create an army of Guardians for raids at that chance of getting a one shot kill on a final boss encounterMy 2cp? I think it would be awesome....but the game dev in me says that this shouldn't happen due to balance issues...sorry

Lorewise, I don't really see why Guardians could be seen as weapon expert compared to swash, zerks or assassins. In fact, I would define ourselves more as armor experts rather than anything else. Which is the focus our T4 set is providing (additional mitig compared to other plate tanks).I really see this kind of ability as part of the assassin sphere of focus.

Plus, we already have Flay that provides a substantial amount of damage.

Last, this ability was usefull at EQ1 where mobs were fleeing when they reached low life. I have never seen such behaviour at EQ2 (Though I regret it).

"Last, this ability was usefull at EQ1 where mobs were fleeing when they reached low life.
Now this would be a really fun thing to happen, but for balance reasons would be totally game breaking and cannot be allowed to happen, unless...

One idea : How about it has a small chance of procing only when the Mob is downto <20% health, and make X2/X4 etc mobs immune from it (for sensible reasons! Or at best just have the next hit say x4 damage in a raid setting).

It could certainly spice things up although it would be so random due to the small chance that you could not balance the game around requiring it to happen to be able to defeat content, just when it did happen you would save a little time in an instance run and might just save the day if things were tight.

One thing I do love in the game while levelling is getting that mini ding just as I'm about to be overwhelmed and then coming out alive, its great to win against all odds now and then.
