Hi all.

Sorry if this sounds a little vague. Basically, my knowledge of MMORPG's can be written on the back of a postage stamp !!!

I have just started playing EQ2, and have encountered a couple of headscratchers.

I am struggling to get to grips as how to communicate with other game players in-game. I want to ask stuff, but can't figure out which buttons I'm supposed to press, etc.

One of the things I wanted to ask was how to dive under water. I had killed a foe ( yay to me, lol !!! ) and it dropped a chest, but I couldn't reach it...........how annoying ?!?!

So, in summary, if some kind soul could give me a link to somewhere that has tips on the very basics, like diving, and also on how to use the in-game chat system, I would be very grapefruit..............I mean grateful !!!

Many thanks,

Steve.

few ways to communicate with players:

Most chat goes on in the level channels. You can access them by typing /1 (or /2,/3,/4). They get added as you level.

To talk to people in a zone, use /shout or /ooc. For people right next to you you can use /say.

To talk to people in your group use /g, /gu for guild.

You can send people tells (direct communication) by typing /tell <character name>. If they send a tell back to you, you can reply by hitting, backspace or R (I forget).

To dive underwater, just zoom in until you are in first person mode, then you should be able to move around in the water better.

You can check out more info here: http://eq2.wikia.com/wiki/EverQuest..._Wiki:Main_Page

but most basic info is just learned as you go : D

If you don't want to use first-person, just hold down the right mouse button and move it so it's directly above your character while he's swimming. That will get him below the surface; then you can aim however you want.

An even faster way to go down and up in water is to use thenumberpad. The 1/End key to go straight down, and the 7/Home key to go straight up. Obviously you can stop that process at any point and from that point on you manuever in water same as on land, and as mentioned by the other posters.

I used to use the 1st person/arrow key method for swimming but I never liked it. Then one day someone casually mentioned the 3rd person Home/End option - I tried it and I loved it.

But it was like after 5 years of play that I found that out.

Point is, don't get frustrated - just enjoy yourself. You will rapidly learn most mechanics - but you will still be learning after years have gone by.

Welcome to the game.

Thankyou all for the kind welcome's, and the links/tips.

I had read through the FAQS etc before I posted. There is plenty of good info there. It is just that some things are hard to suss. I guess it will be a lot of trial and error.................mixed with a few deaths, lol !!!

I still find the chat system confusing, maybe I'm just stoopid ? Hopefully I'll pick it up as I go along.

May I just ask one further question ? ( I promise to search before I ask.............honest )

I would like to see the level of my skills that involve mining/fishing etc ( sorry, I'm sure there is an umbrella name for these ) as I tried them out, I know that, for instance, my fishing is 6/45. Is there a way to see these all listed. I would love to be able to see how much more I need to raise them all.

Thanks again.

To view your skills-

Hit P to bring up your persona window. Look for the tab labelled 'skills' (other tab names include 'details', 'factions' etc.)

Under this tab there are a further set of tabs, each containing information about different skills. You can just browse through them until you find the skill you want. I think mining and fishing can be found under 'general'.

One of the things I had difficulty with when I first started was learning what all the hoktkeys were, for example P= persona window, G= guild window, I= inventory. To review these in-game, click on the eqII button and then click options (or just hit alt + o), then on the left-hand-side menu click controls, then game windows on the right-hand-side menu. This should give you a long list of all the game windows, and the hotkeys to bring them up.

There may be a more comprehensive list of these somewhere on this forum, but I couldn't find one to link.

You might be thinking Parthenon.

And don't be afraid to come here and ask questions or even ask in game. Most people are pretty good about answering even some of the more commonly asked questions. (There will be a few that might get lippy about it...You can just ignore them.)

That's the correct spelling for the singular form, but when you're talking about two (or more), you want parentheses.

I just wanted to add that in game you can use the /channellist command and it will list all your current channels, by number, just as it does when you log into the game.

I think they were all in chat 1-9. The only thing I could remember was /sh which was in yellow.
/sh is Shout. It is a zonewide (the zone you are in) chat. /t playername will send private tells to that character.

When you join a guild /gu is the guild chat. If you are an officer of that guild, you can speak in officer only chat with /of.

/channellist will show you all the channels you currently are in. You can change their number using /channelset A B

A being old number and B being the new one.

You can also add and remove chat channels by right clicking your chat window and selecting Chat Options. You can set up new channels in there and check or uncheck level and specialty channels.

If you just return and type something, it will be in local chat - characters that are nearby will hear you. In terms of colors, you can set different channels to different colors if you want, but you might want to wait until you get a handle on chat. The "green" chat is usually what we call level chat, basically the various level brackets (a starting character will only have access to 1-9, but that is used by almost everyone as a general chat, and it is very busy.) Usually, but not always, it will be 1 or 2 on your /channellist, so you could check there, then /1 chat, or whatever.

( www.eqinterface.com ) that does exactly what you want. It's a little window just about an inch and a half wide and 5 lines long. Contains the five harvesting skills and your current level and max level, like this: "Fishing 124/200". You might take a look at it. The file you get is called Miniskill.zip; look in the postings for the last week or so. I don't know what it's called in their database list but for harvesting this is the cat's meow. (Actually, there are two by different authors. One is as described and the other uses a small harvest picture with a mouseover to find out what your skill level is. I don't care much for that one. The first is my choice.)
