I am running EQ2 on a new computer (Intel i7 (3.2 GHz), 6 GB RAM, NVidia 8800GTX, WD 10,000 RPM Raptor, Vista Ultimate 64-bit). I have my game settings up pretty high, and the game runs pretty good except for one problem:When running through some areas, like the Temple of Thunder while doing the solo shard quest, the game gets choppy when I approach crowds of NPCs. I can usually hear hard drive activity during or immediatly after the game gets choppy, so I assume that the game is loading something. I tried lowing my texture quality, but that didn't help. Any ideas on settings to tweek to remove the choppieness. Basically, I'm looking for what setting I can lower that gets the best bang for the buck in performance. I love how the game looks at my current settings, so I don't want to lower the quality as little as possible.Thanks for any help =)

Update –I was messing around with my settings, and I was still getting the short delays / choppiness when approaching NPCs even when I lowered my settings to the “high performance” settings. Since, my older computer was able to run EQ2 fine at higher settings, something must be wrong with the EQ2 install or my computer.I just copied the EQ2 directory over to my new computer. Could something have gone wrong?Any ideas on what to troubleshoot?Thanks in advance

Loads from the hard disk are likely textures. Lower textures would help, but you're still going to have to load things the first time you go to an area (and again later if the textures were not being used and were dropped from memory).Try defragging your disk drive that has EQ2 on it, that can help with load times. Beyond that, you can't get much improvement, even faster disks (like 10k rpm platters or even solid state drives) can only help so much.

Thanks for the reply =)I tired lowering the texture quality, and it doesn't help. I also tried to run a defrag, but Vista won't actually run the defrag because it says the disk doesn't need it.

I'd still recommend the Defrag past Vista's omnipresence saying otherwise! If you hit the 'defrag' button instead of just 'scan' on the drafragmentation tool, it will still go through the process as requested.

Vista doesn’t have an option on the GUI to “defrag anyway” when Vista claims a defrag is not needed <img src="/eq2/images/smilies/2e207fad049d4d292f60607f80f05768.gif" border="0" />, so I ran a defrag manually via the command prompt (defrag c: -v –r). I let it run overnight, and the next morning it was done. Unfortunately, it didn’t help much.I can deal with the choppiness, but the second or two long freezes are horrible. It’s frustrating because I’ll have 40 to 50 FPS, and then I’ll run up to a big group of mobs... I’ll feel the FPS dropping and then , bam, my graphics freeze (but not the mouse) for about a second or two. During my testing in Lavastorm, I even had freezes like that when just panning around. I also got it when I pulled a mob with a bow (froze for about a second or two when the mob ran up to me)Any other ideas on things to try/troubleshoot?

Based on the times when you are lagging, it sounds like you system is having trouble with particle effects. Try lowering just your particle effect settings and see if that has any effect on your performance.Also, in the performance options you will see a checkbox for 'reuse vertex buffers'. If you haven't enabled that already, please do so now.

I ran a test with the above adjustments, and it seemed to do the trick. I didn't know what settings to lower for particle effects, so I lowered the quality to "average", I lowered Max Spell Results to 4, and I lowered Max Particle Size. If you don't hear from me again, you're a genius... thanks!

That zone is crazy with particle effects and used to bring my old P4 box to it's knees around the time the game launched. I remember having to tweak those settings whenever accessing the zone, which is why I suggested it.Let us know if you need any further assistance.
