I'm in China and I have the 41780 error.

I bought a copy of EQ2 All-in-One pack to play EQ2 with a buddy of mine. It got all downloaded and ready to go and I made a character. But when trying to actually log into a server I get the dreaded 41780 error.

That, I've seen, has happened to a lot of people trying to play from China and I can understand that. Something to do with blocked ports and banned IPs. But then, just out of curiousity, I logged in using a buddy of mine who plays from Australia's account and I can log in fine. Absolutely no problem whatsoever.

So the only thing I can think of is that SOE has put bans on connections from account created in China? Is that the case?

Here is a pathping:

Tracing route to ableq2-0101.everquest2.com [221.192.153.44]over a maximum of 30 hops: 0 192.168.1.100 1 192.168.1.1 2 121.28.148.174 3 121.28.148.173 4 221.192.186.57 5 61.182.172.253 6 61.182.172.113 7 * * *Computing statistics for 150 seconds...
I believe thatg particular error codes indicates you are attempting to connect via a VPN tunnel, eq2 does not support that type of connection, do a scan on the knowledge base and the forum here for additional information. Add to the fact that your tracert is not showing anything past the 7th hop - that can also be an issue

I've been doing some searching on the forums here and it seems like people are saying that old accounts (pre-2007) are able to be played fromm China. This would explain why I can log into my friend's account but not my own. Has this ever been addressed by someone from SOE? I can't see that it has.

"I couldn't say if the old account will experience the same problem or not. If you would like to make sure before subscribing then we should be able to add a few days of free time for you, though. Simply PM me with the account name or contact our phone/e-mail/chat support if you would like us to do so."

I was doing some more research and someone asked about the age of the account issue and TSR-DanielH replied with the above. The original poster never followed up with his results, but I would like to try this with an old account of mine if it's still available. I would PM you TSR-DanielH but for some reason I "don't have permission to send PMs". If you send me a PM I can supply my old EQ2 account from 2005.

You are NATing out through a router, depending on the router it can have a built in firewall, if so this needs to be configured to allow the required ports to be opened for the game. What router are you using - make, mode and firmware revision wouold be helpful.

From the knowledge base

EQ II Firewall Information Sony Online Entertainment does not support the use of firewalls and proxies, including cable/DSL NAT routers, campus and office networks, or any type of Internet connection sharing services. However, in an effort to assist you in configuring your systems on your own, we would like to provide the following information which may help you in setting up your firewall to work with EverQuest II. EverQuest II LaunchPad and Patch Servers A TCP connection is initiated to patch.station.sony.com at port 7000. A UDP connection is initiated to port range 3016-3021 and 9700-9703. EverQuest II Patch: A TCP connection is initiated at port 7010. EverQuest II Game Client: UDP connections are initiated from the EverQuest II client on UDP ports 9100, and UDP ports in the range 32800-33000. Additionally, ICMP messages type 0 (echo reply), 3 (unreachable), 8 (echo request) and 11 (expired) should be permitted bi-directionally between the client PC and the EverQuest II servers. EverQuest II Servers Subnets: There are multiple IP addresses for the Patch and LaunchPad clusters, and they may change as the network demands, so check often using a DNS lookup tool if you provide a specific firewall rule for these services. The EverQuest II server IP addresses are currently in these subnets: 64.37.158.*, 199.108.2.*, 199.108.12.*, 199.108.202.*, 199.108.203.*, 195.33.135.*

As you can see the logon and patch servers utilize TCP on 7000,7010 and UDP on 3016-3021, 9700-9703, then once the client is launched it utilizes UDP on 9100, and a range of 32800-33000, inaddiotn to 3 different ICMP protocals, any one of thse being blocked can cause issues.

Also, in reply to your other message - TSR's are not present on the weekend so it wil be Monday after 10 AM PST for a response
