Greetings,

I recently had a Machine Meltdown.

OLD SYSTEM:

P4 2.6 GHz 800MHz socclet 478 CPU

Biostar P4M80-M4 Socket 478 MB

1GB Patriot 168pin pc3200 ddr ram X2

Nvidia 6500 128mb AGP GPU

running 1024x768 (32bit) (60Hz) Resolution

Windows XP Pro 32bit

Maxtor 6L100MD sata HD

350W Power supply

This would Run On Balanced Just Fine 22/28 FPS in most zones including Neriak where most claim Lag Issues.

Running on Extreem performance setting for Raids I was still aple to pull 14-19FPS wich was ok not great but did not create serious spell lag DPS loss in most Raidzones.

New Upgraded System (Bandaid Budget repair):

Intell D915PGN Intel 915P Socket775 MB (new clearance item)

Intel P4 3.2GHz 1mg/800MHzfsb Socket 775 CPU (refurbished)

Gforce 8500 GT 512MB DDR2 PCI Express Card (New)

550W Power Supply

Same RAM

Same HD

Did Not Reinstall Windows or EQ2 just put the old drive in New Case. Reloaded all the drivers and Directx Made sure all of my Updates for windows were up to date and have done several Full File Scans.

My Performance Set on Extreem Performance all Particles OFF no Cloth Detail No Cloaks

Just Standing still in Zone No other Players around

I'm Licky if I can squeeze out 7-9FPS and in raids _mat 3-6FPS wich has seriously impacted my ability to DPS or even run from place to Place safely!!!!

I read a lot about How EQ2 runs on a single proccessor But My single 3.2GHz speed is an increase to my old single core P4 CPU

My Board Chipset is newer and I made sure to check the Intel Website to ensure that my BIOS were current for the CPU

When I hit Ctl+Alt+Del and Bring Up the Performance Tab I see 2 Graphs tracking CPU Usage They run in Tandem with little Variation when I Launch EQ2 they still run in tandem till I log in Once the zone Begins to load the Left meter still hovers around 25% but the right Graph Tops out at 100% and straighlines till I log Out.

I need to Know which direction to go here and get it right, Budget is tight but I'm willing to invest if it will be something I can add to in the future.

Should I thump the HD and start with a clean Install of everything?

Should I Look at MB archetecture?

I will be getting 2 more Megs of ram to Match my set or should I replace it with 4megs of the best the Board will handle (533)?

I don't think I can afford another MB/CPU and a RAM Upgrade all at once.

I don't Plan to upgrade my OS anytimme soon unless I MUST so I'm stuck with the 4GB ram Limitation.

Please any assistance you can give in the way of tweaks or recomendations of upgradres/Changes I can make to get a decent performance out of would be greatly apreciated.

Nycodemus

80 Wizard AB server

Greetings,

As a first step you'll want to check if any chipset updates for the motherboard through the manufacturers website. That could help you increase performance.

I think a big part of the issue here is all the new hardware without a Windows reinstall. A fresh install after major hardware changes is always a good idea. At the moment you probably have some old driver residue in the background causing issues. A driver cleaner may help but a reinstall is always best.
