Hello, I'm running Windows 7, 64 bit, RTM (the english version you can get from MSDN).

I run, AOC, and WOW fine under this system. HOWEVER, when I have tried to run EQ2 I can't get out of the neriak newbie town area with out the system hang/crashing.

here is a very partial dxdiag report if it helps any ( I had to pair down
As an update, I tried updating ASUS MOBO P5Q-E chip set, sound drivers etc..with latest windows 7 64 bit drivers... nadda. Also updated to latest nvidia driver for windows 7 64 bit (version number is in the dxdiag I believe). No luck Again, AOC and wow both work fine, just EQ2 locks up the entire machine. Basically I start playing and after about 5 minutes system Freezes up, sound is frozen up... and only thing I cn do is hard reset the machine. Not good.

oh yes a bit more details, I'm running as Admin, and the short cut runs the game as XP SP3 (Compatibility mode).

Any idea if there will be an EQ2 64 bit client? Or if this will get fixed?

For now I guess I go play other games and give up on the EQ2 trial, till I have something else to try.

It runs even better than on Vista. So I wouldn't search the problem between EQ2 and Windows 7. It's more likely related to some driver, as I use the nvidia driver myself I would first look at the soundddriver or any other driver.

I have the UAC disabled as much as possible as I don't like that stuff anyway, so perhaps try that one as well? There is also no compatibility mode needed for EQ2, it runs just fine as it is. Maybe disable that compatibility mode and just click that "run as admin" checkbock, if you don't like to disable UAC that is.

There will be no 64bit client for EQ2 for the next few years at least, that one is sure.

Try out the suggested things and see if this helps.

Also running EQ2 on Windows 7 with no UAC and no 'Windows ... compatibility mode'.

Works a charm and far smoother than Windows XP.

yup I think its either the sound driver or maybe my G15/G13 drivers (I'm using thier windows 7 64 bit beta driver as well). but my gut says its the sound driver.

I tried again, this time in the options and sound, I unchecked the "Use Mic" since I don't have one at the moment, AND I told it to use two speakers. Also I I turned off compatibility mode and ran just with admin checked it ran much longer (30 minutes) but then locked up with the same issue. Black screen, and the sound lis ocked up in the speaker (can't describe the sound).

Its weird though, don't know why its just EQ2 doing this..I'm puzzled.

I haven't tried turning off UAC, I like the idea of the added protection from viruses, and such..but maybe I'm being to cautious as I ran XP for years. I'll try that next temporarily and see if things improve.

Greetings,

Have you tried any other versions of the Nvidia drivers? We have had some issues with the newer nvidia releases and they could be part of the problem. You'll probably want to try the version recommended through the knowledgebase if you haven't already. You can find that information at the following link:

http://help.station.sony.com/cgi-bi...p?p_faqid=16089

After talking with many people, nvidia, ASUS, and here I did the following, I downloaded and ran memtest (from www.memtest.org) and had no errors reported. Solid performance. so the next step was to remove Bank B of RAM (2 of the 4) and see what happens. I'm using Corsair Matched DDR2 8 GB (2 gb per stick) on an AUS P5Q-E board, with config set to AUTO in the AI Bios for Memory configuration.

So...I pulled out 2 of the 4 sticks of RAM (using only A bank) and now I don't crash ever.

So..its either

1) MOBO has a problem 2) Ram has a problem3) EQ2 has a problem4) or combination of 1, 2, or 3 it seems.

From here I've read on ASUS forums that running with both banks populated, users may need to up the voltage to the DDR. I'll try that next....

as a final bit of information

I'm running ASUS P5Q-E board with DDR2 (heres the memory module link)

http://www.corsair.com/_datasheets/...8G6400C4DHX.pdf

I havn't had any success getting EverQuest 2 (EQ2) to run... I did run WOW all night long though last night with no issues

Anyway..thanks for the suggestions, I'll revisit EQ2, in a few months after Win 7 is live, maybe there will be better drivers and or a fix from EQ2 folks. Bummer, though I never really got to do the trial...

I ran a bunch of tests last night, tried a BUNCH of different settings based on help from other people

Tried setting P5Q-E board Bios DRAM to setting to 4-4-4-12DDR2 800 MHZ,DRAM voltage to 2.1 (per spec on sticks)NB Voltage to 1.4--------------Auto (which defaults to 5-5-5-1Auto MHZDRAM voltage to 2.1 (per spec on sticks)NB Voltage to 1.5---------------setting to 4-4-4-12DDR2 667 MHZ,DRAM voltage to 2.1 (per spec on sticks)NB Voltage to 1.4Also tried a bunch of combos of these, EQ2 HANGED OS no matter what. Bizarre, I tried settign EQ2 to not take advantage of multicore, still get the HANGED OS. I'm gonna try using 2 sticks again, first A BANK, then take RAM that was in B bank and put it in A BANK... see if there are issues. If I can determine that this works in both cases, then I KNOW its something to do with 8 GB in this board...

Its been a long road and heres where I'm at, I've talked with ASUS, I've talked to corsair, I've talked to Intel, and eVGA and NVidia.

I have tested my ram, memtest.org and its rock solid, I then used IntelBurnTest, to MASSIVELY stress test my CPU and memory, and it passes, with all 4 cores not getting hotter than 54 c. The system that has this OS installed on it currently has a Gigiabyte EP45-UDP3P board, 8 GB memory, G15 keyboard and a Nvidia 295. Run EQ2 with little or no issues, do not have problems with memory.

Way I look at it - is if it was something withthe game, there would be numerous other reports and not just yours. Lot of people are running Vista 64 with the game and not having problems. Window 7 is a upgrade of the Windows Vista kernal, so the issues that you describe would have shown up there also.

I gave up using ASUS boards a number of years ago had way to many unexplained issues with them on building validation machines for vertical market applications, same thing with Creative labs hardware - will not touch either one of them again.

To be fair it could be an nvidia driver issue still... I know that in 2007 30% of all vista crashes were caused by vista drivers. I also know that its only Everquest2 that dies. I'd still like to have the Everquest technical support team try this exact setup... would be good to see if they can repro it. Also there are some differences between the trial and full commercial game bits. For example, I can't chat to channels (its been disabled) so perhaps there are other differences that lead to the issue.

This will be my last post for a bit, I'll check back in a few months, maybe by then there will be better drivers available and/or EQ will have discovered that what I report IS an issue.

As final data I'm running anatec case and power supply, the power is an 850 watt supplier, pretty beefy, my rig, rocks typically, just not when running EQ2, even AOC runs great.

I found the problem....I have an eVGA 285 GTX card (1 gig ddr3 ram) that installs overclocked by default. If I run the eVGA percision control panel and turn the clocks down, I become 100% stable in Everquest 2. Here are my clock informationcore clock 530shader clock 1195memory clock 995I'm not sure If I have to reduce all of them or not but thats what I tried and what fixes the issue for me.... been running EQ2 stable for 2 days now...very very happy. For data purposes, defaults for the eVGA 285 GTX are typically core clock 702shader clock 1584memory clock 1323note that even with the reduced clocks the I've seen no slow downs at all, in fact most games are playing better than ever (smoother) it seems.

I JUST posted about the SAME exact problem and the SAME solution 3/4 days ago. LOL. I have a BFG 285 GTX though and it was exactly as your EVGA.

Remind me never to buy a a video card again that's not reference card specced. There must certainly be a reason nvidia has the clocks lower than these manufacturers. I am pretty sure the OC'd is more a marketing gimmick than a performance gain anyhow

I used Rivatuner to turn the Overclocked from factory card down and it's stable as heck. But again weird that only EQ2 engine caused the card to work so hard. I can run Crytek and Unreal engine games which are certainly quite intensive and they run fine.

It'd be cool if a mod drops this information in a locked sticky or FAQ thread.

I ran the gauntlet trying to figure this problem out, I tried everything..literally, chip sets, bridge voltages, sound cards, etc... I agree that this one should go into some tech support database, its a good catch.

I'm glad to hear that you were able to get the issue corrected. As mentioned by others, factory overclocks can be unstable in certain situations, especially during the heat of summer. It is something we're aware of, but you can probably understand why we would be hesitant to suggest modifying voltages and clock speeds. Someone with a decent background in computers could handle it without issue, but someone without that background could easily brick a graphics card.
