After pressing the big red "Play" button, EQ2 freezes with a black screen at about the same time I would expect the audio portion of the login screen to start playing. Any ideas? All other games and applications I've tried with this sound card work fine. I can post a dxdiag if necessary.

This sounds like it might have been caused by conflicting drivers or hardware. Please give that a try and let us know if the problem persists.

Yes, that is the first thing I did actually. I Uninstalled the motherboard sound chipset's drivers, then rebooted into BIOS and disabled the onboard audio. Only then did I put the new card in the machine and install the new drivers.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear above, but I'm still having the problem. Nothing I have tried has worked.

Greetings,

Was the sound card the only the that changed with this upgrade? Some people have had issues with the I7 chips in which case you might want to try disabling multi-core support. If the problem persists at that point then you might want to post at least the first section of your dxdiag file.

The sound card was the only thing changed. I was using on-board audio and EQ2 was working fine with it. I installed the sound card, and EQ2 won't boot. If I uninstall the sound card drivers, EQ2 boots again, if I re-install them, EQ2 doesn't boot. I always hangs just after pressing Play, when the screen goes black, and the music would start.

I disabled multicore support, and that didn't help - still can't boot with the new sound card. I have posted the first part of a dxdiag below. I can post more, or all of it if you want. Thanks for your help. I really want to keep this sound card, and the manufacturer says it should work with EQ2. dxdiag:

___________________________________

------------------System Information------------------Time of this report: 8/28/2009, 12:01:08 Machine name: CORE-I7 Operating System: Windows Vista™ Home Premium (6.0, Build 6002) Service Pack 2 (6002.lh_sp2rtm.090410-1830) Language: English (Regional Setting: English)System Manufacturer: System manufacturer System Model: System Product Name BIOS: BIOS Date: 05/19/09 12:10:39 Ver: 08.00.15 Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.7GHz Memory: 6134MB RAM Page File: 1585MB used, 10904MB available Windows Dir: C:Windows DirectX Version: DirectX 10DX Setup Parameters: Not found DxDiag Version: 6.00.6001.18000 32bit Unicode------------DxDiag Notes------------ Display Tab 1: No problems found.
Can you find a different version of the sound card's drivers? It could just be a specific version of that is causing this problem. If they have an archive with previous versions then it might be worth trying one of those.

Also, with a change in the sound card it might be necessary to remove some of the EQ2 setting files. Try moving this files to a different folder temporarily to see if that has an effect:

cache foldereq2_recent.inieq2_default.iniEverQuest2.exee q2.iniAs well as the character specific files, these will appear as such:Servername_CharacterName_EQ2_uisettings.iniSt ationname_characters.ini

I think I got it!

I moved the files you mentioned to a separate folder, but that didn't help. Your comment about drivers got me thinking, though. I looked all over HT Omega's web site and found no older drivers - in fact the newest drivers that HT Omega's tech support told me to use weren't even published on their web site. (Of course I had tried the version that is on their web site with no luck.)

Then I remembered the sound card came with an installation CD... That's right - the drivers on the CD fixed the problem! First thing I usually do when installing new hardware is ignore the CD and download the most recent versions of drivers. This is the first time that was a bad idea for me.

Anyway, thanks for your help, Daniel! I think I'm all set. If not I'll either let you know, or just return the sound card and go back to on-board audio.
