After logging in and clicking the PLAY button, the Everquest2.exe file starts loading. The screen blanks and the EQ2 default cursor shows and then the game stops. I've narrowed it down to the sound card, and have tried several steps to fix the issue. If I disable my sound card in the device manager, then the game loads just fine (without sound of course). If I then re-enable the card the game hangs again.

Curious enough, the exact same thing occurs with Vanguard. Must be shared code or something.

I followed the advice in this thread to no avail (not that it really had a solution):

http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/...topic_id=445678

Other things I've tried:

1. New motherboard (onboard sound)

2. New sound card (HTO Striker 7.1)

3. New drivers

4. Old drivers

5. Direct X 9/10

The only thing I haven't done is reinstall my system, which I refuse to do considering I have several other games that work just fine with all of the setting above. At this point I am looking for one of two things:

1. A clear-cut solution to the problem

2. A way to disable the sound in EQ2 (like you can in Vanguard).

Thanks.

Greetings,

Did this just start happening recently or has this always happened on the effected computer? Was anything changed around the time that this started happening?

Since you have tried several different drivers and even a different card, it might be an issue with driver residue on the system. I would advise running a registry cleaner to clear out any old driver files that might be hanging around. Let us know if that has an effect on the issue.

I bought the computer back in January, at that time I was playing Vanguard and it happened from day one. Fortunately, Vanguard had a way to disable the sound so I didn't have to fiddle with my sound card each time I loaded the game. While disappointing, it still made the game reasonably playable.

I tried cleaning the registry, and although my system probably needed it, it did not fix the problem. At this point, as much as I hate to say it, I'm going to try to reinstall the system. I'll post back here with my findings.

Fortunately, I solved this one without having to re-install my system. Your idea of cleaning the registry gave me the idea to also check my device drivers. Windows keeps former/un-used devices around even though they aren't "active". I used the following steps to find those and clear them out.

Open the “Start” menu and choose “Run…"

Type in “cmd” (without the quotes) and click “ok”.

At the cmd prompt, type in “set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1″ (without the quotes) and press enter. (Note that nothing seems to happen–this is ok. We are actually setting an environment variable which is going to help us to see hidden devices)

On the next cmd prompt line, type in “devmgmt.msc” (without the quotes) and press enter. This will launch the Windows Device Manager Console.

In the Device Manager Console, from the “View” menu, select “Show Hidden Devices”

And then remove the devices that aren't used/needed. I still think my other motherboard was the culprit and when I replaced the board, it still kept the drivers for it around.

Having said that, I find it interesting that the EQ2 system would scan through non-active drivers. All the more strange considering if I completely disable all sound drivers it then skips the step. Anyway, I'm glad this was solved and thank you TSR-DanielH. I've liked your posts that I've read, I find them helpful and pushing toward a solution rather than the same old "re-install" mantra. Keep up the good work!
