So there I was, minding my own business, pondering the wonders and mysteries of axes and ale (both of which are amazingly important). If you haven't pondered these, you really should. Anyway, I'm getting off topic. So suddenly, there was this brilliant flash of light, and these things fell on the table in front of me!! I almost spilled my stout, but you can all rest easy - I didn't, the stout is safe.

So I found these... I looked at them for a while, but I don't think I can figure them out. What do you guys think?

That's the first one. Here's the second.

See? I can't read that! Maybe one of you more scholarly types can figure this out. Oh! One more thing. I found this in me beard!

Must have fallen there! Almost fell into me stout, which obviously would have been a travesty. I think a few others have appeared in other places, too, from what I am hearing... maybe it's worth looking for all of them?

I'd like to help, but as I mentioned before, I'm pretty busy with my musings. I'm interested to hear what you guys find, though! Best of luck!

*ponder... ponder... ponder..."

Oh my.. well.. time to get to work then.. think I may need some ale of my own for this one.

Here's a link to the composite of the shards that we actually discovered so far. I've fixed 9 (it looks like they resized it, it had artifacts and was slightly too small). http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/...iscodshards.jpg

I'm still working on putting the "discovered" (note the quotes) shards together with that. Stay tuned.

Sesketh@Everfrost wrote in a thread about translation of the Obelisk:

Translation How-To:I've been asked to put up a comprehensive translation site, and I'll probably do that at some point, but for now, without posting any images of the languages (which outside of this forum might tread perilously close to copyright issues, and I frankly don't want any drama in my life this month), here's the basic primer:1. The fonts are located in your Sony / EverQuest 2 / UI / Fonts folder. Double clicking them on nearly every Windows system will open a sample screen that includes the alphabet in uppercase and lowercase, as well as the number characters.2. If you want to install these fonts for use on your system - which I do - then you do that in the Control Panel -> Fonts control screen. Navigate to the above listed directory, select all, install, poof. Restart any apps that use these fonts.3. For me, I simply put the graphic to translate on the screen, open a blank Word document, select Insert -> Symbol, select the appropriate font, and double click each one into the document. When I'm done, I select the text and simply translate it into Arial or some other English-appearing text.4. None of the materials I have been asked to translate to date have been anything other than English phrases written with EQ2-universe symbol systems, so no actual grammatical transliteration or anything of the sort is required. It's not all that complicated, or all that amazing, or even all that intuitive... but it was nice to keep up the appearance of brilliance on my part for a short while. LOL! I'm a professional music educator for those that know me, and so I'm pretty good with symbol systems. (Obviously.) This has been a great exercise for me, and a lot of fun.I'm happy to continue interpreting anything else you throw at me, and I'll probably find a few things of my own. I'm still working on unlocking the icons that wrap around Bonemire cloud stations, which are the same symbols used throughout Lavastorm, Solusek Ro, and in the stairs outside Halls of Fate. Weird symbols, haven't gotten 'em yet.Good translating!

A know how for newer folks.

i have checked all the broken spires that i can remember, all of them are dead except for the one in everfrost that is glowing orange at the base, but i can't remember if it always has been or not. i can't do anything with pieces and there is nothing to click on. i was thinking maybe it was a live event and we just have to wait for a while before we can advance it.

If ferrett was a clue not a type-o, then maybe it has something to do with the roekill.. or ratonga in general.

I'm just sort of thinking out loud here. Maybe writing this out, or someone reading it, will spark something. The clue we have is that something large object had a piece fall or broken off of it, and that this was caused by a relatively recent impact. By recent, does that mean as recent as a few expansion packs ago (Drednever crash site) or does that mean recent as in Luclin shards hitting something big on the planet (pre-launch)? That smaller piece is resonating with a lot of power of some sort, apparently, so it was easy for our man to slip the book in or near it. We have to find the bigger object first; or rather it might be easier to find the bigger object first. Is there anything on Norrath now that is shattered or in pieces that was whole in EQLive (other than the broken spires, I think that possibility has been ruled out)? Or might we be thinking of it wrongly altogether (which I doubt). But it could be that this recent "impact" is the impact that the return of the gods has caused.

Again, just thinking out loud here.

If it's made of ice it may very well be a piece of the Eternal Shard, the big chunk of Ice that Miragul calls a phylactery. (and the current zonein point for Scion, Crucible and Anathema)

Ok, the text from these books is really interesting to me because for quite a while now many players have asked about rebuilding the broken spires in Loping Plains. I would absolutely love to see the knowledge for doing so reclaimed as part of the search for Odus culminating in a rebuilding of the spires in LP along with any thing else which might be planned.

Just saying . . .

[Edit:: I would also have loved to have seen the tablet done as a collection with the reward being a house/guild hall item of the tablet itself when all the pieces were assembled. Just a thought, beautiful artwork on the tablet]

The exact date I do not know, but based on the first book (haven't read the second yet) it's sometime after the original Nexus was cut off, but before the Shattering. You can probably find a more in-depth discussion of date of the book in the "I found something" thread.

My take: There's a rock in TD, a big honkin island with a boat in front of it. It is a piece of Luclin, it was never opened because they didn't need the room.

If anyone recalls, in beta, said rock had undead on it you could see, just not get to.

Infering that pieces of Luclin attract undead, which can be seen all over norrath. The shard isn't ice, it is a tiny piece of Luclin. and would be in the right area due to the `undead `nearby.

I think the shard looks like a small piece of Luclin due to it being blue glowing, and the hint was for a crystal or rock, not ice.

But many of us discounted it since it was never made visitable in the game, there's an invisible wall well before you get to it. Considering its distance I did not think it was for sure or not. Like others stated though, that exceptional piece is also the one piece we cannot actually go touch, walk on, explore. Every single other shard of Luclin is reachable by us, even the largest ones in Jarsath Wastes.

The little shard itself was in a random place comparatively, considering we cannot get near that giant chunk to really explore, it kind of leads us away from it.

So yes, respectfully, your clue was vague. If nobody seems to get it outside of you and game designers, that is somewhat of a tip. Nothing outside of idle guessing could make you realize that is the largest known chunk of Luclin on Norrath, few reasons, just off the top of my head.

1) Again, not available for anywhere near "close" scrutiny. I had to rationalize that those faint black iridiscent edges must be of Luclin and come to a firm conclusion yesterday, well, because you just told me thats what I should know...through Twitter, basically.

2) While physics has been ignored with all the rather large pieces of the moon falling to Norrath and causing comparatively small impact craters, a chunk that massive would have obliterated every single island in the Timorous Deep, every settlement and trace of life that cannot survive an isolated event of apocolyptic magnitude that happened 50 years ago, give or take..

3) In general fashion in the last few expansions, idle lore has been vague. I refer to the lore we glean from random NPCs just making conversation, talking about what they know. Not as common as it used to be. Devs seem more concerned with clever topical easter eggs ("We Salute You, Griffon Tamer Guy") than fleshing out non quest related inhabitants. My point being, nobody in Timorous Deep that I have found talks about this gargantuan chunk of the effing moon sitting off the coast of Gorowyn.

Where's the green...!!!!

I didn't run the quest, but I did work with my two (very tired) children as they attempted to find it (and failed). My suggestion was to search out the biggest piece of Luclin. That took us to JW as I figured the biggest was either in Venril's crown and the crator pond area. Both failed and they fanned out and looked everrrrywhere after that. Not sure even if we had known that and gotten to the right place, they could have found the actual location. BUT, my question is this.

IS there lore on the rock? As this is the lore place and we like lore.....why is it not polluting the waters (or is it and we can't see it). What effects do the local populace feel due to this rock? Do they use it for decoating like at Danak Shipyards? I is curious now and since you started it, tell me a stttoooorrrryyyyy.

Yeah see... that was my point -- I *thought* someone in TD does mention it, but evidently it isn't made clear at any point.
I posted my little poem before most people found the location but as we are talking about it...

If you look at the island at night, and your particles are high enough, you will see it shimmer like the other moon rocks. In the daytime it looks like any other purple mountain.

As for the shard, it did not look anything like a piece of Luclin.

Looking back over all the posts -- and thus with the advantage of hindsight -- there is one word in the Erudian messages that was not properly deciphered, and that might have helped folks "see" better.

It jumped out at me every time I read it -- talking about something "flowing" in the presence of the keys (or whatever -- can't scroll back far enough to check the exact wording). I thought flowing was a weird thing to do -- and when I looked at the Erudian "alphabet" someone posted, I saw how very similar the symbols for the letters F and G are -- just a matter of a slight distance on the last little curlicue.

So maybe, instead of "flowing" in the presence, it should read "glowing"....

All moot now that folks have figured it all out and found the book, of course. But I'm a history student by "profession" and like to keep my documentation straight.

But a question to the rest of you -- I am very slow learning this game, my highest character is a 31 SK, with a mid-20s monk and guardian the next highest ones. Are these items anywhere I can get them with such lowbie toons? Or am I just stuck waiting a couple months until I can get them higher?

Yeah that was one thing that struck me strange... for such a HUGE chunk of Luclin you don't see any real effects. I mean, the little hunks in SS are enough to animate or attract the undead.
When the Lovers Look clue was brought into this thread and into the Befallen.Lore channel, I surmised that the distant shard was what we were expected to see. I had swam out many times to that shard over the months. I knew it couldn't be reached. So it occured to me that the tear might be under water. Or along a line from Lovers Look toward the shard. I just didn't know, exactly, where. I had the right idea when I was swimming along the coasts of the isles. But was not as fast as others. The coordinates came to me via Befallen.Lore once the tear was discovered.

I would have found it, on my own, eventually. I had fun either way.

This was a refreshing reminder of the rich tapestry that is EQ2. That there are stories behind bad guy x, location y, and "why me!" z. Of course this round of lore quests also has an added bonus, a new mysterious npc. I'm just as interested to learn who this brave and determined scholar is as I am in the lore this individual is supplying through research. I hope some day that his/her story will be told either on this forum or in game. Again, thank you for an excellent job and continue the good work.

Obann

P.S. Most were looking in the water, or along other parts of the shore. A lot of people did discount it in favor of other shards because you can't actually get to it, but some did search. I have to admit, I had no idea that was a part of Luclin though. I enjoy reading about lore, but this isn't something I'd heard before. I'd always just assumed it was another island like the ones we can play on. The shard doesn't really look like the others I have seen, and it doesn't seem to have caused a lot of damage in the area compaired to others.. People brought that up though, and I was wondering where they'd heard that from.. (a few mentioned undead from beta, but I wasn't able to participate in beta this time around.) Hopefully we get to see more on that, some day. (Edit: Okay, I waited around for night and now I can see some purple glowing on it, although it's a bit hard to make out at first.)

they mention it in the game that it's a giant chunk of Luclin itself. I'd love to see this re-tooled for release sometime about now next year. Somehow you'd expect a Luclin encounter to be something other than just training practice for hatchlings. While Luclin was a full 1-65 expansion for EQ1, here I'd expect it to be in the upper tiers.

A lot of us that troll this forum knew it was a chunk of Luclin. Also it does look like one if you turn your setting up a lot. The part that really struck me is that there are no quests that relate to a shard of Luclin in TD, nor are there any discovery points. I didn't remember any Luclin shards anywhere in TD when I did quest through the area, and Luclin shards have a very distinctive Blue/Green/Purple sheen to them that is rather unmistakable.

I really hope this shard wasn't added to game just for this. If it was, its very counter-Lore. It would of been much more appropriate for it to be already existing and then made active for this quest. That way people can remember instead of discover. From a Lore perspective, something that has always been there but never had any significants before is much perferable to suddenly finding something that was never there before.

Okay -- in the interest of 'splaining a bit -- let's say that Luclin's disastrous breakup was not instantaneous, and that the bright minds resident there *tried* to control the fragmentation (in the hopes that perhaps it might be stopped some point before total destruction). Would they not try to remove unstable portions from the whole and transport them via the portal to a relatively open part of Norrath -- such as the open sea of Timorous Deep? After the Great Explosion, however, the remaining bits would land more violently on the mother planet.

Just my two coppers....

Someone mentioned in the lore channel that Luclin was not made of pure luclinite, but that was merely ore on the moon, and that is why the luclinite mountain is hard for us to recognize (because it is part stone part luclinite)... Why do all the pieces that fell aside from the TD appear to be pure luclinite?

And why is it that some people say that they can see the TD mountain very very easily, but others can barely make out anything against the greyish stone at High Quality? Someone's recommendation was to have max settings... I hope not! My computer can't handle max settings, and told me that he refuses to work overdrive just so I can stare at a mountain! Hehehe.

As for how the chunks of Luclin hit Norrath with only a localized damage, rather then an Extinction Event, I would hypothize that, the chunks of the core ejected, where in fact in inter-dimensional flux. With their mass spread out among multible dimensions, impact might have occured at more surviable levels. Possibly causing some of the damage to the localized pocket realms such as Fear, Love, Hate, Etc. Dimensional Flux might also account for some continental distortions.

It's also entirely possible that the Luclin shards weren't extinction-level events because they didn't have enough velocity to be. These aren't chunks of meteors that have been ricochetting around the solar system for billions of years. They travelled an extremely small distance, by cosmic standards, from Luclin to Norrath. The impact craters around most other Luclin shards bear this out - figure that Meteor Crater in Arizona is 1,200 yards across, and estimated to have been created by a 50yd meteor. That's a crater 24x the size of the cause, and most of that cause evaporated either in-atmosphere or on impact. I don't think there's a single Luclin shard anywhere on Norrath with a ratio that big to it's impact crater.

Would there still be devastating tsunamis from that big hunk beyond Gorowyn? Certainly - but we're probably looking more at something like the Indonesian tsunami of 2004, rather than the ocean-relocating waves estimated from the impact which (probably) killed off the dinosaurs.

More on-topic, I can't believe I missed the adventure of working out the lore quest clues with everyone! That's it, I'm not going on any more family trips.

Reguardless of any other Sci Fi sorces, it is fairly easy to see that the chunks of Luclin that hit Norrath did not leave a particularly large crater, nor had much of an impact on anything other than their very imediate surroundings.

Look at Crater pond in Anotnica. If we were to believe that shards of Luclin should have the same impact as a meteor does on earth, then Qeynos would have been totally destroyed by its impact. Although it is a fairly small shard, the bit that we see is what did not break up in the atmosphere or on impact, and that remainder is several dozen (hundreds? thousands?) times larger than any piece left over from the above mentioned Arazona impact.

We may not know the reasons, but it is clearly observable that the impacts from luclin did not have the force of a meteor.
