View Full Version : Another question: Best duo partner?

I'm trying to get my friend to come over to EQ2, at least part of the time. After a couple of particularly bad raids in that hellhole of a zone, MMM, in EQ1, he said he's actually considering it. So since neither of us have many particularly strong ties on my server yet, we'd probably do a lot of duoing after he levels up. So my question is, what class should he play?I have had a chance to duo with a Fury, and that seemed to go pretty well, although I'm not really sure how hard the content (Pillars of Flame) was to him . I'm not necessarily looking for the #1 best class based on various mathematical formulae or anything...just something fun for him to play (I want it to keep his interest) that complements a ranger fairly well. It is unlikely we'd do any organized raiding anytime soon.I'm guessing something with healing would be good, and it would be nice to have the convenience of ports. Or maybe I'm going about it the wrong way, and maybe a strong nuker or even another ranger would be the way to go. Ideas?

I'm sure others will have more informed choices (I generally don't know all the classes very well). My recommendation would be a shadowknight or paladin. These are both "tanking" classes, so they are able to keep the mob aggro'ed and hitting them, while using plate armor to increase their mitigation (they take less damage). They also offer at least a little bit of healing for situations where things get hairy.

Best duo partner for a ranger is a paladin. Self heals, amazing aggro control, amends on the ranger to guarantee he doesn't steal aggro, and rezzes if the ranger dies and the paladin manages to live.

If you 2 are going to be doing solo content together the best bet for you is an illusionist. Any of the mage classes will do but Illys can give you Illusiary Arm, have nice dps and can mez when things get rough. A combination of kiting and root/nuking really works out nice for this duo. Another choice would be a fury for casting dps and heals. The last thing you want for a duoing partner is a tank.

Sure the illusionist can mez, but who is going to heal when the going gets rough? Who can rez, who can take a hit? An illusionist is a good duo partner, but not the best. Of course everyone has their own opinions about that, but the point of a good duo is to be able to kill things fast with high survivability, not mez the mobs and hope you hit them before they hit you.

If you pwn like i did lvling up all you need is power regen and utility because everything dies before you even get hit. Who needs a tank when the mob doesnt even have a chance to attack?

EVerything dies before you get hit, means you are taking out easy easy content. the pally/ranger duo will let you take out hard content up to even con heroics not stupid solo mobs and ^ mobs.

One example of why tank+ranger works: http://eq2.wikia.com/wiki/Palace_Ad...utant_Krilagarr

When we were level 70, and not all that well geared, a guardian and I managed to duo this dragon. He's a level 71^^^ heroic and definitely not a pushover. He's meant to be killed with a group of 4 or more (generally). We had no heals, we had no tricks. We just controlled our aggro and played our classes as well as we could. It was no easy feat, but we managed to take him down without either of us dying.

The same sort of thing would happen in Sanctum of Scaleborn... it's not meant to be duo'ed, but the guardian and I could manage it, because he took the hits, I shot the arrows, and we were careful to play smart. Tank+Ranger can be a powerful combination.

Ranger + Chanter. Illus in my opinion.

Are you able to take on even con heroic mobs like a pally/ranger duo can?

When people ask for the best duo partner, they are not asking which two classes own solo mobs. Everyone owns solo mobs. They are asking which 2 classes can take on heroics and dungeon crawl, imo. A fury/ranger combo in a dungeon crawl would have a really tough time, methinks.

What say you Nadda?

Paladin/Shadowknight would be a good addition if he wants to be a fighter, if he rather be a mage, an Illusionist might also be a good help

I agree with those that have said that Paladins or Shadowknights would make for an ideal duo partner, for the same reasons that have already been mentioned. I'd also add that a Brigand might make a decent duo partner, without it being a no-brainer like a crusader/ranger duo. If you're going to be duoing heroic content, you will need someone to take the hits because you sure as hell can't. If you're not doing heroic stuff, let him pick what he likes.

A chanter duo COULD work, but I think it would make things needlessly difficult because one broken snare or resisted mez at the wrong time could kill you both.

With a Fury helping out, i have gotten very close to duoing the dominus in Kylong plains heh. I'm confident that ultimately i could do it but it would be a lot of time of both of us being exetremely sharp. Furies are good because they obviously have heals and a lot of similar tools rangers use for kiting, so it enhances the style rather than having to change it.

Though for regularly trying to kill group content I would have to say a Paladin. With amends they can concentrate on just healing themselves and throwing some taunts in while your unloading your damage fully actually gets sinked into the paladin as hate.
