Sounds about right. Turn down your graphics before entering the guild hall. It's a very intensive place to load for your machine since there are so many minor details.

Ive got a very good pc and eq2 DOES allow me to higher the settings up to this point. Ive got 4 gig of memory and i see no reason why eq2 would shut down with an error message saying i run out of memory. Theres a fix needed for this. This error message has been arround since the launch of kunark.

No one is suggesting that you should run with lower settings as a permenant solution, just as a workaround when dealing with the guild hall crash.

Also, please keep in mind that EQ2 uses the x86 architecture so it will not be able to address your entire 4gb. The game is limited to the max RAM available for a 32-bit operating system.

have same error problem. Also with the out of memory message. Speaking off just had a crash in DFC a couple of minutes ago. The thing is had same issues in SH and Nek Castle. Coincedance all three are castles with mem leaks?

but what i find the most annoying is that if you have killed a named you have a lockout of 18 hours.. questing becomes very annoying in such a way..

Can something been done to this? Have tried setting the setting on lowest possible still the out of memory error with rendering problem

Do you still get that crash after lowering your settings in that area? I do not believe there are any active memory leaks in the game at this time. The last one I was aware of was in Veeshan's peak and that was corrected about a year ago.

Darkor -

If it progressing then it might be a heat issue. Some form of heat damage could cause the kind kind of crashes you're seeing. You might want to open your case and verify that all your fans are spinning and that your vents/heatsinks are clear of dust and debris. Also, if you have any kind of heat monitoring software for the graphics card then post the temperatures you're getting when both idle and under heavy load.

Ditto for me.

I just reinstalled the game, (using a temp account to reinstall/patch, and relearn basic skills before reactivating my old account.)

This laptop, which managed well enough a bit over a year ago, and well enough when Faydwer came out, now gets that same crash message. Oh. It the popup says the DirectX program at fault is on drive E, but my E drive is a recovery partition. DirectX is on C, so is the game.

Same symptoms. If I'm in full screen, it just freezes, (actually, it flashes SOMETHING up, but it's buried under the fullscreen display.) I have to do a hard powerdown to get around it. If it's in windowed mode, it crashes with that fatal error, but I get to keep windows up and relaunch.

I'm running on NVidia graphics, GeForce Go 7600, 512 meg onboard

2048 MB memory,

Intel Core Duo at T5200 @1.6GHz internal clock speed

DirectX 9.0c

WindowsXP with SP3

Looks like a memory leak to me.

I found another thread that mentions disabling dual processor support, so I'll try that. Cheap workaround if it works, and practical, (if Windows will be kind enough to keep all the other processes on that other side of the processor.)

Again, it worked about 14 months ago, so I'm thinking it's something that's changed in the game.

If you have GPU shadows enabled then you'll probably want to turn them off as well.

As I mentioned previously, I do not believe the game has any memory leaks at the moment. I suppose it is possible but it doesn't seem like the case here.

It didn't help.

Turning all my graphics down helped. With them turned down, I could do a lot before I crashed, but eventually I did.

In retrospect, this game was NOT working a year ago. It was lagging down. As the game ran, performance continually degraded until the game was a slideshow. Now, the game runs fine...right up until it freezes or crashes.

I accept it's not a memory leak, per se. It appears rather that it continues to load textures and models into memory until it runs out of memory, never destroying old textures. It makes me wonder whether or not this game even has a cap on its graphics cache, and considering the old lag issue, (now gone, and I miss it...it provided a warning that graphics memory was filling up,) whether or not this game ever had a graphics cache limit.

If so, it might be worth clearing out any unnecessary processes. To disable background programs:1. Select the START button.2. Select RUN, then type in "msconfig" (for Vista, type msconfig in the search bar at the bottom of the Start Menu)3. Press OK4. Select the STARTUP tab.5. In the list, uncheck all boxes EXCEPT for SCANREGISTRY and SYSTEM TRAY. If you use Windows XP, please note that SCANREGISTRY and SYSTEM TRAY will not be listed - just uncheck the entire list.6. Hit apply and then OK. Restart the computer and try the game again. If you are still experiencing the same issue, please reply back.

If you're going to post a screenshot, please crop it down to the relevant information. MS-Paint is probably the easiset way. I removed the big screenshot and cropped it below:

This is exactly the error that I get when logging into my teir2 guild hall. Same as your screenshot, out of memory. Could the team work on the guild halls and fix that please? It happens to many people.

Oh. Preventing all those programs from launching at startup didn't fix it. It did HELP. It stretched out how long before I crashed, but didn't prevent it. Basically the same thing turning down all the graphics did.

In fact I got one crash that gave me TWO messages, one on top of the other.. I tried to take a screen shot, but evidentally, the printscreen key wasn't being accepted at that point.

I figured I'd put 2 cents in here too. I have had problems which I have posted on like this on other threads. After thinking about it, I did reinstall the PC, as it had been up 6 years without a reinstall and some changes in hardware and software. I tried all the things suggested before, to no avail, and the only thing that did work was when another SOE update to the program fixed the problem in the past, or upgrading the video card. So........I'm back up after a week and a half, complete.

Now, for the info: I did increase to 4 gigs ram, but it still worked until that one update, so that isn't the issue. I also changed my paging to 12 gigs pagefile total maximum, through the registry on this install. I decided to try to play last night with all the normal programs running in the background as I was able to do before when I did the reinstall instead of shutting them down just for the game. As is mentioned, the ram may be a problem, but I don't think the paging would hurt. It would allow for more virtual memory to work than normal, which seemed to be what helped (I had 8 gigs pagefile before), background programs running or not. I had no problems in the game, but did notice glitches in the exact same spots as before in Neriak and GFay. Also in Kylong when you fly from the city to the docks. It hiccupped for a second, then kept going, Surprise! No errors and Windows didn't shut the game down. I think what's happened is the software, the connection to the servers, the settings in game, and the hardware settings in general are the issue. Not necessarily the fault of anyone, but when you change a program, it does affect how the hardware is supposed to run the program. So yes, the zones by and large when you patch them are sort of broken, and you have to have the speed of the connection to gloss over them in a way. If there's a programming error however minute, it may also do this. If your hardware and/or game settings are not quite right for the patched zone, you can crash. But this is found through trial and error here. Not all machines will do the same settings. It's up to the person to try to figure it out. In defense of Sony, they try to do the best they can, but if you have older setups, and they move the software to newer hardware say........you can have problems. I didn't install up to the latest DX. I have only up to Nov 2008 DX on here. I can install the rest though; I have all of them locally on disk. Time for that later.

All I did last night was login to all 12 characters and move them around a bit, so this test isn't complete. I need to try to go zone, fight, quest, etc, for a long period of time to be sure, but I was up in game for several hours. I also need to note that I copied the old EQ2 directory from my previous setup, to the new setup. so that means it's as it was, but I didn't re-download the software, as I should have done. If it works like this, then it should work, period, especially if I were to re-download all the files properly. The reason I mention the glitches, is that I had something like this when I played Lineage 2, and it was also a memory hog. After a certain time frame, you actually had to shut the PC down, and turn off the power to clear the ram, as I think it got corrupted after so long. Note: I don't play Lineage2 anymore.

Ok, for a quick update on my side, I played with all my normal programs on; not turning any of them off just to play the game, as when the game first came out, for several hours each time I was on this week. I crafted for hours and had no problems, which for me, was never an issue. I then took my main out and played for a few hours the other night, along with zoning to different zones, porting, fighting and questing, etc. I've had zero problems so far. I am downloading a complete EQ2 package from the net, so I can see if the cd install and then the update after is what's causing this problem. Better to get it all brand new than to get a bad patched file and never know it, and try to find it. And after it's done, sometime tomorrow, I'll try Neriak, in which I've had the most problems. I was in GFay and it hiccuped a bit, but other than that, zero issues so far. So, as far as I can tell, over the years even with reinstalling EQ2 and updating the game, along with new hardware and the age of the install of WindowsXP, somewhere along the way, something went wrong or got corrupted. Maybe a patch was corrupted, or some program or driver messed the system up. I did switch to water cooling too, recently, and it definately keeps the temps down quite a bit from before.

To Sony: Would there be some way for you to have the client system verify the files as there are in some other games, and if corrupted, redownload them if found? I think that would at least strike that as an issue to look at in the future. Then if something were wrong, it could be tracked and found easier? Just a thought.

It may not pick up everything but it will usually pick up the glaring issues.

Also, please try to crop your screenshots down to a smaller size in the future.
Sorry about the size there. It's been a long couple weeks, and I had some RL stuff to do too. In answer to your post Daniel, the reinstall of the OS and all programs with the updates works and all the problems seem to have disappeared. I played a few weeks ago and just a few glitches (it hesitates now, but doesn't get an out of memory DX error or a crash) where it used to crash before, those are the only problem spots. I've played with EQ2Map UI and the normal EQ2 UI, and it doesn't matter. It works though. I've also played on the Test Server, but had to remove the EQ2Map UI as in the last update, it made it crash, Just using the EQ2 UI for now. My Office 2007 Outlook doesn't do the blinking like a Christmas tree bulb either, heh.

I am satisfied that between the complete download from scratch, or a copy and paste from the previous install from disk and patched), had basically no difference, other than the UIs. So, the crashes seem to be in the OS or related software/programs, whether it be a driver issue, or some other software in this case, which may have caused some corruption somewhere, resulting in problems with this particular game. As before, other games were not affected, so there is something different about this game, it's darn picky, lol.

Anyways, so far, so good, and I even have all my services up and running, tray items too. So it isn't anything to do with backround programs. Probably just up too long, about 6 years, with no reinstall and ugrades, patches, new programs, changes, to boot too. Anyways, that's the result for now. Cheers!

10/13/09 Edit: I suppose I should add that even through all these memory errors I've seen on the boards, I am still running smoothly. No issues even with the increased memory usage coming from EQ2. I thought I should maybe add this. WinXP 32bit uses max 3gigs physical ram. I have 4gigs installed and it shows 3.1gigs in Windows. I've seen different numbers in other machines. I will also stress that I have a 12gig swap file, well, it's actually 4 of them totalling 12gigs. Below is how it's done:

First, go to Root directory C: and add x(number of) pagefile.sys; IE: pagefile.sys, pagefile1.sys, pagefile2.sys, etc. but not too many as it may slow the machine down. I picked 4, which for my system, is not too much.

Then, open the registry editor and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSe ssionManagerMemoryManagement and double click on the entry "PagingFiles", which will open it up for editing.

You then add the entries for each pagefile(x).sys in this box as so:

Click "ok", then close registry editor, and reboot. You will not see these entries if you were to to check in the performance section under advanced settings. All you will see is that it says (in my case) 12gigs custom pagefile and it will only show 3000 - 4000 gigs swapfile. Looks strange, but for me it works. What this may be doing is taking the extra usage and transferring from ram to hard disk and back and forth, thus alleviating the problem. If I use GPU vs CPU in EQ2, it has no effect. Dunno, but it's worth a try.

Disclaimer: For God's sake, if you're not sure about this, don't do it yourself, get a computer literate person to help.
