After recently upgrading my internet service from a city-wide wireless program to a cable modem, I am now unable to log into the EQ2 servers. I can enter my username and password and proceed to the game selection screen of the station launcher, but when I click "Launch Game" in Everquest II, one of two things will happen. 1) the game will start yet get hung on the "Trying Login Server #1" message or 2) the game will not launch at all and a message will pop up, saying "game authorization failed."

I do not have a router and am running straight from the cable modem. I called a tech support agent and asked him if anything with the modem could potentially block my access to EQ2, which he said there was not, and to contact tech support from the game itself.

EDIT: Also, this appears to be the issue with other SOE MMORPGs such as EQ2 as well. Only other MMORPG I currently have installed on my machine is World of Warcraft, which I was also able to log into with relatively no trouble.

sounds like a firewall or security appliance port blocking. If you are running a router with a firewall built in you need to create port triggering rules to allow the game through. If you are using a software firewall you need to allow the games applications access to the internet.

More details on your internet setup and what ever security software you are running would help

I'm connected directly to my cable modem.

The only firewall I use is the one built into Window's Vista, and even when I turn it off, I get the same error. I do not have this issue when I attempt to connect to EQ2 via the wireless or my dial up connection at home, so I'm fairly sure that the issue is related to the cable modem.

What additional details should I provide?

It isn't always required after a patch but if you're having an issue then that is the first thing I would attempt. Delete any firewall entries for EQ2, Everquest 2, or Launchpad. Then restart the computer, try to log into the game, and select 'allow' whenever prompted.

So what you're basically saying is that going off the information which I have provided you with stating I am perfectly able to log into EQ2 on a dial up connection, the cable internet service is causing my firewall to block my ability to connect to the game?

I don't find that to be a realistic case.

Well, let's take a look what happens when you try to connect.

Please open up the Start menu, choose the Run command, type "command" in the space provided, then hit Enter. If you're using Win2k type "cmd" instead of command. For Vista, "type command" at the search bar on the bottom of the Start Menu. The MS-DOS Prompt window should appear with the prompt, "C:windowsdesktop". For Win98/ME or Win2K/XP/Vista, type the following three DOS commands, one at a time, hitting Enter between each command, and waiting for the prompt to reappear: ipconfig /all > c:eq2info.txt tracert unrest.everquest2.com >> c:eq2info.txt tracert najena.everquest2.com >> c:eq2info.txt

Vista can give you that 'access denied' message at times. Instead of typing 'cmd' into the run box, try the following:

1. Click the windows button in the lower left corner of the screen

2. Go to 'all programs'

3. Select 'Accessories'

4. Right click the 'Command Prompt' icon and select 'run as administrator'

You should be able to run the commands at that point.

It's actually related to the way the network is set up. A standard connection is practically a straight line from each customer to the ISP. Your network setup is more like a loop, though. Instead of lines from each computer to the ISP, the lines go from one computer to the next until they eventually loop back to the ISP.

That's an extremely over-simplified explanation to the point where it is somewhat inaccurate, but it should give you some idea about what you're dealing with. That structure is usually used by universities, military bases, and places with very old infrastructure. Even with everything set up perfectly on your end, you will probably run into trouble when trying to play games using that connection.
