View Full Version : Need help finding out why my FPS drop...

I took a break about a month ago. A day after the big patch with the Rime, and new quests and other stuff they added. ANyways I came back a month later, and everything was fine in the beginning, but now I am getting random FPS drops. it'd be 50-60, and when moving, or turning around it drops to 20's, hell even saw it say 9 once... It NEVER did this before, and I am worried, and annoyed. Someone said when I posted about this in another post it has to be my CPU not being that great. Well, I know it's not that great... Being a quad core 2.33 ghz. But... I have the same setting, and everything... Never changed anything. The only thing I can think of was it acted like it was over-heating, or something. My Computer, and GPU which is a Geforece 9800GT were purchansed about 4 months ago at the same time. I have 7 gigs of RAM, Windows Vista Premium 64x, and SP3. I can drop a link to the exact computer I have if it's needed. Anyways, back to me thinking theres maybe a heat problem. All of the fans are working in the tower, and the one on the GPU, but when I was playing the game for a while, I turned off the PC, to check inside. It was hot. The end of the graphics card, opposite of the side with the fan is really hot. I then installed the nvidia software that lets you watch temperatures of the components in the PC. I started the game up played more, flipped out of the game to check the temps the highest was 222 degrees Ferenheit. This sounds very hot, and I heard somewheres the newer and more modern cards are running hotter, but I once also heard somewhere on a forum if the GPU gets hotter than 160 you can start to lose performance. I am confused. What does this sound like? There is no, nor was there any dust build up, I blew out what little was there with a can of air. I ran 3 different scans of the PC it's clean of any nonsense that could be running in the background. So, I made the game to a full file scan, I ran msconfig and turned of crap that didn't need to be on even though it's the same stuff from before. I did it to be safe. Still... Random FPS drops, and I mean like freeze, and go, freeze, and go, slowdown type stuff. Also, I notice, when my character is riding her Bear her clothes disappear... Like everything detailed, and on her pops, goes away, and she's like a naked mannequin, it's flashed back and forth, this as well never happened.... HELP!!!

Was reading some forums, and someone said a lot of problems might be the patch, or the newer NVIDIA drivers. I am going to roll back a few prior to the recent ones, and see what happens.

I tried a bunch of previous drivers... Same problems... I can't figure out what the problem is... It's making me maD. I can only make it go away if I set it to high performance, and thats just gross. I'd rather not play the game.

Greetings,

Are you using CPU or GPU shadows? I believe the addition of GPU shadows would be the only major change that happened while you were away that would effect performance. You can find that option in the shadows menu of the display options. Try both settings and let us know whether or not you get better performance by switching.

No, I don't use any shadows. The GPU are ghetto looking, but the card handled them perfectly, and the CPU looks great, but destroy my FPS. I don't use them, or flora. The flora didn't really frop the FPS much, but I still didn't use it. I got just crappy performance, I don't know what to do, or where it came from. I've have everything the same since before I left. I am wondering if I deleted, and started fresh from the TSO discs would it help? Can you run full game fiel scans, and still have unseen problems only a fresh install would fix?

If you really want to do a full reinstall, then you can simply delete the following files from that folder:

cache foldereq2_recent.inieq2_default.iniEverQuest2.exee q2.iniAs well as the character specific files, these will appear as such:Servername_CharacterName_EQ2_uisettings.iniSt ationname_characters.ini

That will clear all of the game settings and will work like a reinstall without as much updating.

I tried that it didn't work, so I un-installed it, and deleted everything left over, and re-installed it. After that I noticed it still crashed when swithinc characters, like everyone is still having that problem, but the FPS is slightly better. Still not what it was before. So, IDK...

Either the client isn't as optimized as it was before the last pajor, and minor patches, or something is wrong on my side. Going to have to just take my PC into Best Buy, and see what they can find out... It's going to suck if it's something thats going to need to be sent in.

Let me know if you got any news about upcoming patches to fix stuff, optimize, whatever. Or, driver updates I can try. Currently, I am all up to date with everything.

Thanks for your help so far.

Regarding the crashing with switching characters, I believe that's been pinpointed to an issue with the Voice Chat system - disabling it should prevent crashing during switching for now.

As for any further suggestions - you can post your dxdiag information here and we can certainly provide help in what could stand to be updated/tweaked!

I went to the PNY website, and can't find how to go about talking to someone about my card. I put a small fan with the case open blowing on the card, and it runs better. So, I guess I have a ghetto card... It's got to be running hella hot, because I have it pointed in an angle to blow on the card, and bounce out of the tower. That air feels like I have a little space heater going on in my face. So I take it even with this quick fix it's still not running like it should. I remember registering the product with the CD that came with the video card, but I wouldn't know hwo to talk to someone to have them send stuff out so i can send it it, and now I have to go find my old 8500. >.> Cause I am pretty sure the onboard video card will be a mess to run this game in 1680x1050. >.> Thanks for your input. Anyway you can point me in the right direction for getting my card sent in? If not thats cool. I know it's not really your job. Maybe I can find a number somewhere.

Well a quick google of PNY and RMA brought up this.

http://www3.pny.com/rma/rmaRequest.aspx

Before sending it in I would do the following.

1) take the card out and blow it out with a can of compressed air and visually inspect that there is NO dust left in the card/any of the fins/and arounf the fan where they can build up a lint like material.

2) Manually spin the fan and make sure it moves free.

3) when putting the card back in make sure you have a good power connection going back onto the card and when first turning on the system make sure the fan starts up.

4) when all else fails, RMA the card and have them repair it.
