If you are not sure, use ACT to parse your damage with a slow weapon and a fast weapon (both the same rating). That's the best way to get a quantifiable answer.

I use my defensive stance if I am in a level appropriate group and tanking, but when soloing, or tanking with a bunch of my guildies mentored down, I use my offensive stance. The reason to use the offensive stance is that you cause a lot more threat (so much more it overcomes the extra threat from the defensive stance) because of how much extra damage you do.

gotcha i will check with the act program. lol i have it but didnt even think of using it for that

thanks for the response

Only on the hardest hitting mobs will I switch to defensive stance. I'm basically just in T2 armor btw. Not raid geared (with a few exceptions like myth and shield).

I was joking.

I still avoid it like the plague unless it's forced on me by unusual circumstances.

Yeah, there is very little reason to be using defensive stance. You lose a ton of threat and DPS, and only gain a little avoidance. The only time I ever use defensive stance is when I only have one leather healer, and the mob is known to crit/hit hard. Otherwise it really hurts you more than helps.
