Our friends distribute over several guilds. Beside from the self-created cross-guild channel (everybody including non-guildies can join if they know the name), I would like to see guild logon/logoff and roster also for the alliance, ie. I would like to get a notification when an alliance member logs on, would like to know where he his, if he is afk, etc. Much like a guild, just with the advantage we do not have to give up our existing level 80 guilds and with more ease of inter-guild communication. Stupid idea?

I think it would be the next big innovation in guild tools. Guild alliances have been around pretty much since there were guilds and, on occasion, have become central enough to form the nucleus of guild mergers. This would be a great tool for smaller guilds that do not want to lose the intimacy and/or continuity of guild history while still allowing for a broader association.

I would imagine it would mostly be for communication and coordination and not actual management of membership, except at the guild entity level. No ability to affect permissions or accesses except within one's own guild. Would be interesting to hear dev's thoughts on the matter or see an outline of possibilities.

If the players are not /anon then you can see who is on in that guild

-Phinneus

add everyone in your alliance to friends.

Alternatively, just use your channel to figure out who is online. /whochannel 1 all gives you everyone in your first chat channel.

Create your own custom "alliance" channel, voice channel and put key members (leadership, etc.) on your friends list, friend one another to guildhalls and all that good stuff. The problem is, as the alliance grows to add more guilds and members, it becomes increasingly unmanageable. And then there's features like the in-game DKP management which simply wouldn't be available; they'd have to use an external site.

What people are asking for is a simpler, more straight-forward approach, rather than the workarounds that they're currently required to use. As someone who played DAOC for a long time, alliances are more than just "superguilds", they allowed for guilds to easily join in common purpose, but also retain some of their individuality. Most guilds were thought of as "families", while alliances were more like "business associations" who's job was to defend their realm. Now, that doesn't directly translate to EQ2, but I can understand what the appeal would, partiuclarly to smaller guilds who also want to do things like raid. As I said, nothing is really stopping them right now, but things could be made easier for them.

I am thinking of an additional tab in the guild window for this "alliance".
