If I want to make this game looks as awesome as possible -- top-max graphic settings -- and be able to run that with little to no lag even on raids, what am I looking at for system specs?

CPU, Ram, GPU, etc. advice much appreciated. Thanks!

Lag ingame will exist even if you have a super computer if your frontend is dropping packets; if a node is congested; packet distance from the SoE servers to your home; or if a pipe was cut by some errant construction crew, and packets are being rerouted. Since the shift now is for more calculations to be done by the GPU, your best bet out of the box is to get the best 1/2/3 1+GB videocard you can find with the fastest clocks (let alone good cooling options, as MMOs are different than FPS games -- you'll be in it longer and just a floor fan may not be enough to cool these beasts). Oh, and unless you're using DDR3, don't plan to use 8GB of memory with DDR2 @ 1066Mhz. Too many motherboards can't handle the load, even if the FSB/NB/MEM voltages are upped. Having a doozy of a time keeping just 2x2GB sticks stable as it is -- go 1333+Mhz/DDR3 now, save the headache.

Right now, the best you can do is one of the I7 CPU's, either the 920 if money is a concern or the 965 if money isn't a concern. Pair it with 6 or 12 gig of DDR3 on an x58 motherboard. Go with an nVidia 280 or better video card. Run a 64 bit OS to take advantage of the greater than 3 gig of ram as well, either vista 64 or win7 64. I'm not sure if this will allow you to run everything maxed in a raid, but it should come close.

Why would u want to run every thing maxed in a raid. With all the spell effects you wouldn't be able to see crap if you are in melee range..

For reference, I have an average gamer computer that was built 2 years ago, and can run at the highest setting with about 30 fps.

I run balanced during raids with a decent framerate, but the spell effects will either kill you or cause you to suffer a seizure. There are just too many flashy, blinky lights for my taste. If you get close to the mob, you won't be able to discern anything, which can be a real pain on multiple-mob encounters.

My advice.. don't spend more that $1000 for a game rig if you are planning on playing EQ2.
