I have an ATI 4850 and an AMD Athlon X2 processor

When I turned on GPU Shadows from CPU, my system shut down after a bit.

So I checked my Temps after my reboot while running EQ2, GPU Temp was at 115 and climbing and my CPU temps were both low 50s.

So today I switched back to CPU Shadows and my GPU Temp is at low 90s with fan at 100%(it used to run at this temp with fan at 80%) and CPU temps are at low 50s.

Question 1 anybody else experience a big rise in temp using GPU Shadows?

Question 2 I am curious why my CPU temp went up.

Question 3 Is this a sign that my ATI card is acting up?

Not overclocked but does get may hours :0)

I think I will look at buying some new thermal compound and start saving for another system.

Once I enabled GPU Shadows, my video card starting warming up as well. I never had that issue before while playing EQ2. Personally, I think it means that EQ2 is now using more of the card (finally!!! Its great to see it become less CPU bound).

My advice is to google a program called "EVGA Precision" (I know it works on nVidia cards and I'm not running an EVGA branded card for the record. I'm not 100% sure f it will run on ATI cards but I'm guessing there are similar utilities out there).

What I do is manually clock my fan to run at 75% of normal. On my card, it defaults at 40% until a certain temp threshold then slowly ramps up. By starting it at 75%, it keeps the card running very cool and the extra air flow helps keep CPU and Mobo temps lower as well.

This is something I've done since I started playing very GPU stressful games such as Fallout 3.

Hope this helps....

T

Great advice, Theramor! I'll have to check that out for my home system.
