View Full Version : Problems taking aggro? :(

Short story, ran a Shard of Hate run after getting my mythical, and it seemed that I could not keep from getting aggro. Offensive stance, aggro buffs turned off, no hate transfer buffs on me, yet, it seemed that on every pull I was getting aggro.. the only taunt ability I used was War Pledge.

The group consisted of a dirge, 2 coercers, necro, and an inquisitor I think. The Main Tank was a guardian, off tank was a Shadowknight.. after some time, I was moved to a brawler group.. after that, no more aggro.

Anyone know how I can maintain aggro control (ie: not getting aggro), while still doing my job as a melee dps'er with dirge buffs?

I betcha your dirge was running hate, and one of the coercers was feeding you hate too (despite you saying otherwise). If that's the case, I'm not surprised you pulled aggro.

That or your guardian needs to learn how to hold aggro.

I can pull agro off our MT at will with no hate buffs on me. Basically you just gotta watch the hate meter and limit your dps output... That or you can just warn your healers that you're probably gonna end up tanking (for trash) and just go all out...

Could just make you main tank for trash mobs. No trash mobs out there where you really need the survivability of a guardian (other than maybe Veeshan's Peak, but even then).

and it depends if they were pulling multiple mobs or singles, if multiples then they have no clue how zerkers work on AE mobs and should have had the zerk or SK tank instead.

SoH post TSO changes and TSO gear.....why on earth was the Guard MT? This is SoH afterall....The SK, Zerker....hell even a scout would have been better choice.

a guard could never hold aggro in SoH while the raid pulled multiples while a zerk with mythical was on the raid.

i often times had healers who were sleeping or DPSing, raid would pull several mobs. i would lay off a bit but even just auto attacking i would eventually start ripping mobs off the tank one by one, to the point i would probably wind up eating dirt because i was wearing all of my DPS gear. i would get up and start buffing, turn on auto attack and mobs would start peeling again before i was finished buffing..

the guard would always come in as MT, stay as MT and i would find my way to the mender about every 30 minutes. this was in RoK, in TSO the healers have enough extra healing capability that if i were to die now i would be even more [Removed for Content]. i never had any issue when i would tank the zone with people pulling aggro off me but me and the warlock would die and occasionally the swashy with the guard tanking, the MT and officers wouldn't change a thing and could care less about what optimal was, i was the offtank and that was my job, forever and always, no matter how painful it was for me or others. i would eventually tank when the MT wasn't online and the deaths from ripping aggro were cut to near nothing with an AE tank in the zone leading.

this isn't a rip on guards, this is the reality of how other tanks have had to live in this game from start to now, raid mobs have for some time all been single target but even when you pull multiples the raid is resistant to moving in a better tank for the job. did i like eating dirt all those times when the guard couldn't hold aggro on AE mobs when they could have just given me the job temporarily? hell yes, it is partially why many seem so unsympathetic even though we may be to some extent but we all would rather not continue to be seen as the redheaded stepchild tanks in this game until the end of time.

I think too many stick with using Guards because well...what else are they gonna use them for?

While I think the current state of tanks needs some fixing.......I know that you always put your best and most capable in key roles. I have gladly taken on the job of backup or OT for our raids or in some cases as with WOE...i just stay out since its a single tank (SK) zone....it just makes sense given the current state of things.........not gonna make life frustrating for 22 other people simply because of some silly ego. There is no reason for a properly geared and smart SK,Pally or Zerker to not be MT over a Guard.

Personally I think when forming a raid...the decision as to who is going to be MT and OT should be really tough choice.....instead of an easy obvious one.

don't get all emo on me here, guards are still very capable tanks with the ideal main tank setup against single targets. i just had to vent about zones where the raid was pulling multiple mobs and lower con mobs on top of that where my hit rates were as high as could be expected. no tank could hold aggro off me in SoH last expansion unless i was in a very poor group to buff me and the tank was focusing on all the mobs not just the one he was attacking.

we all have our pet peeves and that was mine as we almost all share the same for how SKs and even paladins to a lesser extent have been given the silver platter this expansion. just guard have been given the short end of the stick since even the heroic zones do not cater to single target classes anymore. raid zones still are fairly heavy on single target fights, you just need to prove yourself and get the gear instead of feeling sorry for yourself and allowing everyone else to win by default, you will have to work harder for it now and the other tanks trying to undermine you with all of their new snap aggro tools will not make it any easier.

if you are pulling the aggro and surviving... you are the MT, convince the raid leader to support you

i think our raid leader enjoyed watching me die and the healers were busy parsing or watching TV.
