ok, so i originaly thought i was going to be warlock, but after reading they are more 'attack a bunch of mobs' rather then one at a time focus, i decided to be a wizard, i have a few questions though if you would help me out i would appreciate it

1. should i use 1h staff and a secondary or, as i have read a dagger (which i dont get.. why would a wizard have a dagger?) and a secondary

2. what tradeskill should i pick up? would making my own mastercrafted robes be better the making my own mastercrafted weapons?

3. what specs should i be concerned about in terms of gear? (int, wis...?)

4. what is a good solo build?

5. and finally, what server should i go on? i started out on antonia bayle but it is kinda laggy (ok REALLY laggy, i started in hates envy and i twasnt so bad but when i got to the t'vars(sp) post, it got horrible) so i would like a server thats not PVP but has mature players (i dont do well with whiney kids.) and isnt so crowded that it lags me every few seconds.

thank you for any answers!

Hello,

1. Read the Sticky Post. While some are old, some a bit out of date, if you are starting a new wizzy, they offer very good advise.

2. In terms of 1H vs. 2H. This is only a argument until you get your Mythical. or Fabled version. Usually, apart from key expections, I find you can put better stats with 1H + Secondary rather than 2H

3. Tradeskill, pick one which you like. Crafting is not what it used to be any more. Quested items and drops are often much better than crafted items. Do what you like. In terms of secondary skill, tinkering will provide the most utility while adventuring.

4. For specs, read the guide for more info, but primary spec is INT

5. As you start getting more AAs, I would recomend investing in AA mirror so you can have 2 builds. One for DPS and one for Solo. Again check the guides for specific build.

Oh and prepare to die a lot squishie

Nims

im going to reitterate a few things from the previous poster and add some comments

1. there are a few exceptions but not many so a primary and offhand is better than a two hander

2. if you really want something helpfull to you i would choose sage simply because you can make your own spells which is more important then mastercrafted weapons and armor

3. ok unless you are playing on a pvp server or you want to tank or somthing crazy i dont see needing a solo and group/raid spec since they will look the same, wis and agi for the sorc tree are your priorities the wizard tree depends on weather or not you want to have manaburn, but i suggest just maxing out your fire and ice portions the tso tree is pretty self explanitory

4. see three outside of at the higher lvls get your self some dispersion gear and while int is great HP helps lots when soloing

5. AB is one of the heaviest traffic servers if your looking for a "rp server" and dont want to deal with the lag you could try Lucan otherwise i would just pick a lower volume server

To each their own... You'll get many different opinions on what to do, but ultimately do what makes you have fun in the game.

My version of your questions would go:

1) I don't think I've ever used a dagger in my main hand unless it was for a RP experience. In the lower levels, there isn't much difference between a two hand or a 1 hand + charm (two hand usually has higher stats to come close to the combo). Higher levels, you have WoCP, fabled epic, mythical, etc. that are all 1 hand weapons. They don't have comparable two hand weapons. This is before you consider the additional benefits of being able to equip a secondary. So while leveling up, choose whichever without much concern. 70+ get used to the idea you'll be using 1 hand + secondary.

2) When do you want your craft to be most useful? I ask this because while sage, weaponcraft, and armorcraft are great for leveling up, once you hit max level you won't use them that often. On the other hand, if you pick a tradeskill that makes consumables (alchemy or provisioner) then your craft becomes more useful after max level. For me, Alchemy is nice as I raid and being able to make my own cure potions saves me coin.

3) On gear, until you hit the higher levels, you should only concern yourself with INT (it raises the amount of damage from your spells and increases your power pool). If you want a second stat to look for, STA or + HP is nice to keep you alive longer. Later on you'll cap your INT and things like spell crit chance, base spell damage, spell crit bonus, etc. become your important stats.

4) Solo - until I had the gear I have now, I used 10 in magi shielding, then down the STA line for solo. The rest followed the DPS spec. Magi Shielding will help you the most at early levels. The STA line gives you more hp, mitigation, and lower resist. While all this is nice, it does decrease your DPS some as you can't spec for everything. Until the later levels, the difference in a solo spec and dps spec are not that great. Once you are over 100 AA, you will want to pick up an AA mirror so you can focus purely on DPS while in group/raid.

5) AB is one of the most populated servers as others have mentioned. Lucan D'Lere is the compliment server to AB if you want the occasional RP. LDL does have a much smaller population so the lag isn't as bad. Every server has whiney kids, but I seem to be exposed to them on a limited basis at least.
