How to Use Twitter

Have you heard about Twitter yet? Are you using it? Twitter is a "micro-blogging" utility that allows you to send and recieve short notes, links, and, well...anything you want to share with your friends and the world! Here at SOE we use Twitter to send out news updates about our games, occasional company news, and to keep in touch with you...our players!

If you don't Twitter.. try it. Its worth it just to hear Brenlo's daily car pool commentaries alone. Trust me.

http://twitter.com/spyderbite

Its not mandatory. I never used it.

But I type 75wpm so that might be part of why I like it. I like the rapid form conversations. But I understand they do not really encourage long form discussions of topics. It's all quips and brief comments. Any time I start posting anything longer than 3 lines, folks eyes glaze over.

I cannot imagine doing my job without IM. I can communicate with 4-5 people simultaneously without any of them feeling I am neglecting them.

I like forums too, but like any of these other communication systems, the signal-to-noise ratio is quite low. Whenever I see a gem of information posted here on the EQ2 forums on a subject I feel my readers are interested in, I quote and link it from my blog. A blog can be used as a filter, as a highlight of certain posts or the best posts. Look at a thread like Research Assistants. It's on the order of 90 pages and then the topic that spawned from it is another 40 pages. It's just too much to expect most folks to read that. So a blog can cherry-pick the best, most poignant, on-topic comments and shine a light on them.

I don't see any point in MySpace. It seems to be just a bunch of profile pages with no communication between them other than links. It doesn't give me anything that a full-featured Profile page on a forum can give me. If this forum were using vBulletin, then we would have that option.

As for Twitter, I can't confine my thoughts to 140 characters. Also following replies on Twitter is a complete nightmare.

Especially if you follow talkative celebrities. And, if you do tweet rather than just observe, its quite surprising how responsive celebrities are on Twitter. I've had some lengthly conversations in Twitter with people that I probably would never get to chat with on the street like Wil Wheaton, Betty Nyguen, Larry King, Bill Maher, and various others. Word of warning to twitter newbs.. no matter how much you want to follow Ashton Kutcher.. resist! The guy is a complete attention [Removed for Content] on Twitter. He's capable of flooding out everyone else with tweets in a matter of minutes.

I have had it for a bit now, and find it to be a good way to keep up-to-date with EQ2 when I'm at work. Also if you have a cell phone you can use it on that as well. You can find at http://twitter.com/Alik_Steel

The last two times the game has come down I have found the update on the twitter with'in 30min of the game going down.

NOT that you need twitter to tell you the game is down, but it's nice to complain about it with the other people that use twitter.

Hate to here that "Calthine" I did not know that every one could not use there phone with it.

I was taught that we were given two ears and only one mouth because we *should* listen twice as often as we speak.

So... I'll probably "listen in" some, now that I know where to go.

My life isn't interesting enough to post about, either. However - the stories I invent to stave off boredom, well, some of those might be moderately interesting to someone besides me. But those stories won't fit in the tweet limit, so... *shrugs*

I just did one journal post on Deviant Art... after that, I let my pictures (and their captions, some of which are slightly on the longish side) do the talking.

Oh, I tried that tweetdeck Beta app... and maybe it's just me.. but it doens't seem to like Steam. My Steam Client would then no longer connect on my PC. Had to remove tweet deck. Wonder if any other steam users found this problem?
