Your guess is as good as mine. It never existed in EQlive, and even though there are a couple quests that involve the tree, we never really figure out what it is aside from some basic details. Most of the quest involving the tree involve fighting enemies around it.

Outside of EQ2, the World Tree is the Norse/Germanic expression of the omphalos. It's the center of the universe, the axis on which the world rotates. It was also the location for the self-sacrifice of the god Óðinn, when he sacrificed himself to himself, pierced with a spear and hug from the tree for nine days and nights, until the ordeal revealed the runes to him.

Perhaps it's something from Halasian belief?

If they only added the World Tree to EQ2 just as a homage to ancient Norse mythology, then that's quite a stretch to go without actually making any reference to what it is in the game.

Sure, they've mentioned that the Tree is suppose to be important and has magical properties and all that, but we haven't really found out why.

So far as we know, the World Tree has importance to shaman. Strangely, druids don't seem to be interested in it. You'd think its green, growing and magical so druids would flock to it. Sadly, only people that see ghosts seem to care if you look at the quests.

It isn't related to anything in EQ1 as far as I know and I spent quite a bit of time in Everfrost/Halas.

Like I said, it didn't exist in EQlive. Not graphically or mentioned by NPCs anyway.

The World Tree could be a tree that began to sprout from the cataclysms that occurred on Norrath recently. It probably grew from the huge abundance of souls that died from Luclin exploding and the Rallosian Wars.

So far we haven't see any indications that it is self aware, especially since every quest we're on seems to indicate it is under attack by something. Even the latest quest where your sent to save the tree and find out the shaman surrounding it are trying to purify it seems to indicate that something else is attacking it...

I think this is something one dev during beta started and left EQ2 without giving it any proper explination. Who knows, maybe that is the moral remains of Erollisi Marr and the Valkarie fell in everfrost because they fell when her realm ceased to exist...

Or maybe E'ci took a brief interest in gardning and left some of her ice maidens nearby without proper instructions about tending to it? Who knows?

there used to be a spirit that would show up and kill all the ... well the purple creatures surrounding the tree in everfrost not sure if it still does this or not.

It still spawns and does that.

maybe it has something to do with the treants all across Norrath?
