Hello people of EQ2. Perhaps you might be able to assist me on an issue I'm having. You see, every time I play EQ2, I seem to get these moments where my framerate is dropping from it's normal rate to about a frame a second. This usually persists for about six seconds or so, and then resumes normal framerate. It seems to be happening in intervals of about 15-30 seconds or so if standing still, and slightly longer periods if I am moving my character.

One can imagine how frustrating this could be when in a place where precision of movement is key, or when attempting to craft an item. As such, I was hoping I would be able to find some insight as to what is precisely wrong, and how I can attempt to have it fixed. The data below is the information I have gathered as per the normal requests of the forum administrators. I can only hope, however, it is of any use.

NOTE: I would like to say right off the bat that I had attempted to isolate EQ2 to be used on a single core of my dual core processor. However, the problems did not occur suddenly afterwards. And as an attempt to resolve it, I had restored it's use to both cores. Still, the problem persisted. I do not know if this was important or not, but I thought it to be mentioned.

EQ2INFO.TXT INFORMATION:

Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : user-2eeb008b95 Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : hsd1.tn.comcast.net.Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : hsd1.tn.comcast.net.
Greetings,

Based on the way you describe the issue, it sounds like a background application or another computer on the network eating up your bandwidth. To make sure it isn't a background application, let's disable those first. To disable background programs:1. Select the START button.2. Select RUN, then type in "msconfig" (for Vista, type msconfig in the search bar at the bottom of the Start Menu)3. Press OK4. Select the STARTUP tab.5. In the list, uncheck all boxes EXCEPT for SCANREGISTRY and SYSTEM TRAY. If you use Windows XP, please note that SCANREGISTRY and SYSTEM TRAY will not be listed - just uncheck the entire list.6. Hit apply and then OK. Restart the computer and try the game again.

Besides that, does anyone else use your internet connection? Do you use a wireless signal without a password? The lag spikes you are describing sound like the kind of lag you would get from running a torrent or file sharing program while running the game. If you are on an unprotected wireless network then you might want to consider setting up password encryption. If you have other computers running in the house you might want to turn those off for testing.

I have someone else who uses the internet. though they do not use it when I play, so the internet's bandwidth is usually fully allocated to my computer.

I have tried the methods in which you have spoken of, and sadly, the issue still persists.

The issue itself though does not happen until an hour or two of straight playing. Due to that, I am assuming it is possible graphics card and/or processor overheating. However, I do not know what steps to take to 'prove' that. Any suggestions?

Any suggestions?

Greetings,

As a first step I would recommend making sure that your computer vents are clear of dust and debris and that your fans are spinning like they should. If you feel comfortable doing so then you'll probably want to check the fan on the graphics card as well.

In regards to monitoring the heat, I assume your graphics card doesn't have some sort of built in heat monitoring software? If that's the case then you can take the low tech approach of leaving your case open(with optional fan pointed at it) to see if the situation improves. If the game starts to slow then you can put a hand near the card to see if it feels like it's over heating.

I can't stress this enough, though, Do not touch anything inside your case when the computer is plugged in. Besides the risk that static in your hand will kill the computer, there's the risk of getting burned or electrocuted yourself. Always err on the side of caution and don't take any steps you aren't 100% comfortable with.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

It might not look hot, but for example I bought a 7950GX videocard when it first came out, and the fan appeared to be running fine but it was reporting a temperature of 95C 203F, and as it turned out MSI considered that a perfectly 'normal' temperature for that videocard. Things can get VERY hot inside your case.
