"In the end, I started my quest too late, for the Mammoths were driven to extinction for no reason other than their two front teeth." (In Search of the Wooly Mammoth, page 12)

All I want for Christmas... *ahem* But aren't there mammoths in Everfrost? Did some kind healer or bored necromancer revivicate the corpses found in the story, or... is it just fictional literature in the realm of EQ2? d:

Thanks (:

[edit: citation failure]

Wait, is this about the lore in the story, or are you just not seeing any mammoths in the north-east tundra in Everfrost where they spawn?

Sorry.

The indented text was the last line in the in-game book "In Search of the Wooly Mammoth" I don't know where my head was at when I forgot to cite that part. I just wanted to verify that it was a fiction book and not some weird biography that doesn't make sense, seeing as there are mammoths present in Everfrost.

The writer did his research on the path between Blackburrow, Halas and the Inn in Halas. At no point did he actually wander out of the maze and into the permafrost that the Mammoth's reside on. It is my opinion that this individual later went on to be fundamental in the founding of both the Dirge school of Bardic Tradition and the first EMO in EQ Live history...and yes he was an Elf.

"Telling me exactly how to find the breeding grounds of these magnificent beasts ... My companions left the town at once, seeking a delta to the far northwest of the town. The journey was long and hard, but we eventually found the delta as Old Hemma had described. ... all throughout the delta were the intact corpses of these once magnificent beasts, frozen to the ground. Intact save for one small detail - all of the Mammoths had their tusks removed." (pp. 11-12)

I don't know where this delta is... I just assumed it was the area where the mammoths currently are. And I don't really see much mention of entering a maze to at no point never leave, save for the "winding tunnel" (p. 7) in Blackburrow? /:

However, I'm thinking that this story takes place before Everfrost drifted away, since they're accessing Everfrost via Blackburrow? Perhaps s/he just found the delta of tuskless corpses and gave up there, and the part on page 12 where it says "for the Mammoths were driven to extinction" is really just, "I found a whole lotta corpses and am depressed at the loss and didn't search any further"?

the maze was the area in eq1 that lead to Halas...filled with ice goblins, bears, wolves adn the like. personally, I think it's more of the 'we went to where the person said all the mammoth's lived, found nothing but corpses, and gave up'. they were expecting a breeding grounds...so lots of baby mammoths and adults. they get there and find only dead adults with thier tusks removed.

if they'd been hunted to extinction, like the imagery/assumption of the author implies, I'd bet that Old Hemma would have known about it. there's no secret that Halas hunted mammoth as both source of food and probably thier tusks for building/trading supplies.

Hemma basically pointed on the map and said 'here are mammoths' and then went and found all the mammoths there dead and said '[Removed for Content] it they're extinct!'
