Hello, I live in a rural area of Canada and I'm curious about how well this game will run with 1mbps download and 256kbps upload speeds? Pretty much the only option for me unless I want to pay a ridiculous monthly price for internet.

You'll be fine. I'm on 1.5Mbps and 180Kps up and never have an issue. Whats for more important is ping and packet loss.

Well patching/downloads I'm not worried about I can do all that on my 10mbps connection at work (government job). Unfortunately home options are limited to satelite internet pretty much though. Whats your ping look like on the 1.5mbps connection? I did a quick test on wireless I was stealing from my neighbour last night and was getting upwards of 900 with his 1mbps connection so that's got me a little bit worried. I'm debating whether or not to purchase my own internet or keep stealing his. 900 ping seems like a little much for an online game though and I could see it spiking if people are using voice chat.

Most goverment connections specificly block non-standard ports unless there is a business reason to have them open.

All in all - get your own internet connection and not use other peoples without their permission

"Don't use other people's connection without their permission" - Do you get all your exercise by jumping to conclusions?

I've already downloaded the entire eq2 game and patched it along with expansions on our network at work.

Aside from that I do plan on getting my own connection if it's going to be good enough to run the game. My neighbour has a very similar connection to what I'm planning on purchasing and therefore if I'm getting ping consistently around 800-900ms and it spikes to 1500ms and lags me out on a frequent basis theres no point in me doing it at all. Honestly I don't believe in wireless ethics if the guy isn't going to put at least a basic password on his wireless system let alone a WEP.

Back to the question at hand though what ping can I expect to see with 1mbps satelite connection and whats the ping threshold where eq2 is going to start to lag out?

The signal still has to transfer over copper/fiber to the sat broadcast plant, then travel to the sat in orbit(which is being used for other purposes that might have a higher task priority then internet transfer), then back down to another sat broadcast plant, then back over copper/fiber to the target, then repeat the proceedure in reverse to get the data back to your machine. Sat internet for real time response is pretty much a lost cause, standard browsing and light data transfer works on it, but for gaming the latency is a killer. one of the few case s where POTS dialup, ISDN,IDSL or SDSL is a better choice

As the infamous scotty used to say - Ya canna chance the laws of physics.

It will usually wait until your computer has a certain amount of information ready to send out before sending it all at once. That can really cause problems with online gaming.

If you talk to the internet service provider then they might be able to lower the amount of data that needs to be stored up before sending, but I can't be sure about that.
