I've seen King's Court being played since EQ1 and I can't -not- ask this...

How do you play? And can we get a little /gems game like in EQ1, except it being /kings?

I remember looking it up once but nothing really perked my interest.

According to the Casino in Shadowhaven in EQlive, King's Court is pretty much Blackjack 21.

Hmm. There's a Bristlebane Blessing that grants you a card from the game, each card doing something different.

King of the Court Queen of the Court Prince of the Court The Jester The Mogul The Pauper The Ace

King, Queen, Prince, and Ace are there. The Jester is in a normal deck of cards but I've never seen a game use them as a number value. -maybe- a wild card.

The Mogul and Pauper are what's left. I guess if one would be so adimant about basing it off a real game, the last two cards could be a sort of trump card.

I do remember the Casino in EQ, though I don't remember spending time in it. I'll have to log in and check it out.

It was nothing special. You paid money for tokens that you gave to an NPC, and had a random chance of winning more tokens or better prizes like an extremely fast horse bridle faster than the Chain version... but that was basicly the jackpot at that point. I think I remember one of the NPC's loosely describing King's Court as Blackjack 21.

Oh, that is odd... I always imagined King's Court to be a sort of chess, I think because of the people in Starcrest that are playing it on something looking like a chess board, and that quest you could do for one of them that had you retrieve a missing game piece.

edit: ok my bad I went to have a look and those two are playing King's Field.
King's Field? Oh, man, another game? hehe.

Well, that one doesn't seem as popular. Actua;y tat's the first time I've heard of it!

King's Field, as already mentioned, is Chess, plain and simple. The NPC's in Starcrest mention it.

Ah.

Well, logging in to Shadow Haven today, I got dealt a hand of pwn. But reading dialogue, and trying to innitiate more (I seem to have lost that talent once I stopped playing a couple years ago) I couldn't find any way to get them to explain how i works. Just their innitial speech for me to get a token. After getting a couple "Lady Luck is not on your side" I gave up =( I forgot that I was poor, lol.

From what I read in EQ 1, grah I wish I could remember the details, it's actually a relatively complex game, somewhat like poker, involving queens, kings, princes, and dungeon cards, and certain orders of hands beat other orders of hands but the inclusion of a dungeon card always lost the game.

I truly wish I could remember the source, I remember it being quite a bit enjoyable of a game though.

In the War and Wardrobe quest:

Fippy Darkpaw, he 4th, "Lucan's all in and thing's aren't looking pretty. But I'll be a kitten's uncle if I let a broad (statue of Antonia Bayle), a halfer, and a statue (Lucan) beat me!"

"I need you to shut up so I can concentrate on this lousy hand!"

(you mosey on over to pick up a King's Court Ace and slip Fippy the card)

"Read 'em and weep, King's Court straight!"

So from this, we can draw that you have an actual hand (from him concentraiting on his hand -and- from his straight). There are multiple players as well, and the way he treated the players (as every man for himself, not everyone against the dealer).

My bet's on Kyvthuhlu! >.< sorry for the pun.

Yeah, King's Court always struck me as a very modified version of poker. Pauper is another way of refering to a deuce (2) in some card games.

I'm wondering if there are any suits in King's Court? I'm kinda getting the feeling that suits don't exist, but there may be special cards that don't fit in the suit mix. I don't think there is enough source material for more than a rough idea of what could be in a "standard" King's Court deck if there is a standard deck. Its possible that there are "extra" cards that arn't always used (like jesters in a regular playing deck). Also like poker there could be special rules announced during the deal that changes hand values.

I may be wrong, but I beleive King's Court was originally intended to be a playable mini-game, like the giggle gibber gambling. Obviously it didn't make it to launch, or possibly even beta, along with many, many other things that were never put in.

As a devoted Bristlebane fanatic, in my LARP (Dagorhir, where we focus more on battle and night life), I would LOVE to learn King's Court and would LOVE to learn some 'theiving' hands to turn the game m way. I wouldn't mind making up the game, but...I just don't think there's enough information on it, or at least my knowledge of card games and creating rules are low.

I saw that on Wreckreation Nation on Discovery. Everyone just starts fighting it out with foam and duct-tape weapons, and there's no reward for victory or shame for defeat.... because in the end, nobody can really tell who won.

Anyways, you could just play Poker and just call it King's Court.

Ok, the best information I can find from an in-game source is actually one of the Bristlebane miracles.

http://eq2.wikia.com/wiki/Deck_of_t..._King%27s_Court

The cards listed are:

King, Queen, and Prince of the Court.

The Jester, the Mougal, the Pauper and the Ace.

Not a huge list of cards. No indication of suits. I'd also bet there are more cards in a deck than just these seven. These are just the cards listed by the miracle.

Looking at Alakazam for EQ1 I can find some other cards that are probably King's Court cards (though I can't be certain).

Beggar, Castle, Joker, King, Knight, Queen. (Note: Joker is probably the same as Jester, Knight and Prince also.)

Other cards probably NOT related to King's Court

Red cod, blue cod, black cod, white cod, King cod, card of Bristlebane (I believe fished in plane of michief and probably crafting related)

Wild Card, Runic Card, Shiny Card -Not sure exactly what they relate to but probably not King's Court. Wild Card could be another fished card from PoM. Runic card sounds vaugely familiar but I honestly can't remember what its from.

Heck, Tradeskills didn't come into beta until the last 2 months. The Gigglegibber slot machines didn't come in until only two years ago. I haven't herd a whisper about Kings Court from any dev...umm...ever. No mention in forms that I am aware of besides this thead.

Kings Court has always been a tool used by Devs for story elements. Kinda like Xev is a game like craps. Its just story elements borrowing a real world game and giving it a Norrath flavor by changing names.

I further challenge the Devs to create the perfect card game...one that can be implemented in game! One that can be bought from the station store! (not the in game one, I mean their little goodie gift shop with the Zippos, monkey and sweatshirts ^^))

So you can, ya know, play poker for plat. No cheating!

It dawned upon me that the gambling tables carpenters make in game have face up cards on them. Looking at the cards...its fairly obvious that they are blurry pictures of regular playing cards. There are clearly black and red cards, which are numbered 1 through 10. No face cards are shown. Also you can definately make out clubs as the suit of the black cards. I think most of the red cards you can make out are diamonds, but a few of them could be hearts. Its hard to tell since they are under other cards and they were just given awful poly counts (probably to prevent this kind of thing being inferred from the cards actually).

While it isn't exactly lore, its definately an in-game source.

I always thought having in-game supported Casino's or Card Lounges, Saloons, whatever ya wanted to call them would be a great way to suck up plat. Let players bet between each other but the house takes say .5% of every hand. People love to play card games and betting in-game plat would be alot of fun.

I know WoW originally was going to add this but Blizzard decided not to because they didnt want it to effect their ESRB rating.

Either way Id love to see High Hold Pass introduced into EQ2 and a gambling room instituted where players can go to bet with each other in a bunch of different games.

Most fair way to do it would be for "the house" to take 1/5th of the ante. So if your playing with 5 players and you all ante in 1g the game makes off with 1g even if the total pot is 10p or 1000p. Nobody would even blink.

I'd be interested in playing Xev.

There ought to be interactive casinos in-game in the main cities. At least a few. The Gob-Lotto is nice, but it doesn't draw players together, and there's no skill involved at all.

Or, if not casinos, each city should have a back-alley tavern where iinteractive gambling is played. And in Freeport, every few hours there's a chance that the Militia comes in and demands a shakedown of your winnings, or else throws you in the dungeon with that annoying froglok.
