<p>Miragul doesn't care for anyone but himself. He doesn't care for anything but the advancement of his own knowledge, regardless of what he has to go through to get it. It only makes sense to me that he would betray Norrath and join with a side that is seemingly obvious to have superior power over the planet's normal inhabitants.</p>

<p>I got the impression that Miragul strike down the Ethernauts, or a few of them at least, and took the Staff of Theer. Then he fled back to Norrath proper.</p><p>Where did it says he joined the Void? If he did, they would have had the Staff long ago and pushed the first invasion to its ultimate conclusion.</p><p>The next time we saw the Staff, the Shadowed Men only <em>just</em> recovered it and were in the progress of transporting it when we came in. And the Staff was incompleted as well -- the runes missing and scattered around the world.</p><p>So, simple to say, I'm confused by the statement that Miragul joined them.</p>

<p>I THINK the OP is asking why Miragul joined the Ethernauts if he already had the staff.  The OP may be a little confused by the time travel thing I think.  Remember that he was thrown back to the Ethernaut time at the same time he became a lich, he didn't already have the staff.  And that Miragul subsuquently vanished from Norrath (Not saying he's not there somewhere, we just dunno where the heck he is).  Read from the time Miragul was born, and not in order of year if yo're trying to make sense of this</p>

<p>It's not really writen anywhere, but as I gathered his timeline was something like this</p><p>Miragul Born -->  Miragul Aspires to Greatness as an Erudite Mage --> Miragul becomes a Necromancer --> Miragul creates his phylactery --> Miragul accidentally throws himself back to ethernaut era --> Miragul joins ethernauts under name 'Roadyle' in the interest of studying the Scryona (and later the Staff) --> Miragul steals staff, runs away, vanishes for now.</p>
