Over the past week or so, I have had an issue with crashing to character select. When this is about to happen, my packet loss goes up until I simply drop to character select. Once at character select, I am able to immediately return to the game. There is no message that I have a character currently in game, I simply log right back in. If I am in a group or raid, once I come back in, I am still in the group or raid, with all buffs I had previously cast still in effect. Once I come back in, I lose the character names for people in my group. They all show as "group member" in the group window.

I have done all the port forwarding, tried with my firewall on and off, switched the cable from the router to my computer, reset the modem, reset the router and updated the firmware for the router. My roomate, who uses the same router (but does not play EQ2, he plays LotRO) has not had any connection issues.

My tracert and pathping.

Windows IP
Greetings,

It's possible that a program in the background is interfering with the game in some way. Let's rule that out before going further.

To disable background programs:1. Select the START button.2. Select RUN, then type in "msconfig" (for Vista, type msconfig in the search bar at the bottom of the Start Menu)3. Press OK4. Select the STARTUP tab.5. In the list, uncheck all boxes EXCEPT for SCANREGISTRY and SYSTEM TRAY. If you use Windows XP, please note that SCANREGISTRY and SYSTEM TRAY will not be listed - just uncheck the entire list.6. Hit apply and then OK. Restart the computer and try the game again.

Let us know if the issue persists after trying the above.

Thank you for the reply Daniel. I did as you suggested, but it did not fix the problem.

With the 100% packet loss as it reaches our servers, its possible that a firewall is blocking the game. If you have a firewall on your system then open the options for that program and find the exception list. Once in the exception list, delete Everquest 2, EQ2, launchpad, and any related entries off the list. The next time you log in it will prompt you to allow or deny the game and you'll want to select allow. Let us know if that works.

That seems to have worked. I've only had one crash to character select and I did get the message that I had a character in the world and had to wait, so may have been just a "regular" crash. I will try playing some more tonight and report back. Thanks again for your help.

Still having the crashing problem. It almost seems like it gets worse during "prime time". Between 8 pm and 8:30 pm EST, I've crashed 3 times.

Let's make sure it isn't a crash related to a corrupt UI file. Usually an error like that will crash you to desktop, but it could be causing a problem like the one you're seeing. You may want to delete the following files and folders:cache foldereq2_recent.inieq2_default.iniEverQuest2.exee q2.iniAs well as the character specific files, these will appear as such:Servername_CharacterName_EQ2_uisettings.iniSt ationname_characters.ini

You could also move those files into a different directory instead of deleting them. That will allow you to move them back to your Everquest 2 directory if this does not work.

Can your router do port triggering instead of port forwarding? Triggering is a lot more elegant and allows the router to pass multiple triggers for a specific port to multiple machines where as prot forwarding in most cases is targeted at a specific IP. Given the fact you mention your rommmate also plays a different online game it is a possiblity that the router is getting confuses as to what IP to forward a UDP packet to. Long shot, but worth looking into.

If you have issue or confusion on how to do port forwarding, post the make and model of your router and will grab the doc on it if available

Thank you for the advice Wingrider. I am not familiar with port triggering other than hearing the term. The router is a D-Link model EBR-2310 (A1).

Daniel, I will do as you suggested as well, thank you.
