Ok, here's the issue:

My brother got a new laptop to allow him to do play EQ2 while on the road. He managed to get EQ2 installed and patched, but when we hit the "Launch Game" Button the word "Launching" shows briefly before the Launcher window disappears and then nothing else comes up. The Windows Task Manager shows that everquest2.exe is running and using almost 50% of the CPU, but it's just not loading up.

1. System Information:

- Gateway FX Edition Laptop (P-7805u)- Nvidia 9800M GTS video- 4 GB RAM- Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit- Core 2 Duo P8400 Processor- 320 GB Hard Drive

2. Steps Already Taken:

- All .exe files in the Everquest2 and Station Directories are set to run as Windows XPsp2 and to run as Administrator- eq2.exe, everquest2.exe, launchpad.exe (both versions), _aunchpad.exe are all set as exceptions in the Windows Firewall. There are no other firealls on the system.- Uninstalled Antivirus software- Tried to run with Windows UAC Disabled and Enabled - makes no difference for this problem.- The standard Installer/Launcher locked up when patching, but we got farther after installing the Beta Station Launcher (just not far enough)- Have re-installed Everquest2 3 times and the Launcher program several times more so far to try to fix this...- Not the fault of the connection - Patching works fine and the router the laptop is connected to is the same one I use every day to get on Everquest2 with no issues.- Tried creating a new user account on the system and run off that, but no difference.- Tried different Screen resolutions other than system standard- Tried updating to newest video drivers - no difference- In the hope that some process was interfering with the proper loading of everquest2.exe I tried disabling processes in the Task Manager one at a time until I was just down to system files and everquest2.exe - no change.

Can anyone throw any other ideas at me? I'm pulling my hair out here.

Arador StormbowPermafrost

I was about to create a thread with this exact issue in question, the only difference in my case is that I'm currently running Vista 32 bit. The only thing I haven't tried yet is letting the process sit for a while, which is what I'm about to do while I go out to breakfast.

If I find anything that might help, I'll let you know. Otherwise, I'm stuck with a similar issue. =/

Thanks Thrick - good to know that it may not be just a 64-bit issue.

Arador

Greetings,

Are you using Xfire on that computer? There is an incompatibility issue between the latest versions of Xfire and Everquest 2 that is causing a similar issue for many people. If you are using that program then I would advise disabling it to see if that resolves the problem. If not, then we'll probably need some additional information like the first section of your Dxdiag. Also, check to see if the game is generating any crash logs. If it is, then you'll probably want to post at least one of those as well.

Let's make sure this issue isn't being caused by Vista since that OS is being used in both cases. First perform the standard Vista steps listed below:

1. Right click on the program launch icon2. Left click on "Properties".3. In the new window that pops up click on the "Compatibility" tab.4. In the "Compatibility Mode" area check the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"5. In the drop down list make certain that "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" is selected.6. Under "Privilege Level" make certain that the box next to "Run this program as administrator" is checked.7. Click on "Apply" then click on "Ok".8. Right click on the icon and select "Run as Administrator"

Besides that, I would advise moving the Everquest 2 folder out of the program files directory if you have it installed there. You can simply cut and paste it into a different directory. Something like C:GamesEverquest 2 will work fine.

I spend much of the weekend tinkering with eq2 on this system - a couple new full installs and experimentation with install locations. Still don't have the game running and still the same problem: everqust2.exe hangs at launch.

One thing that really jumped out at me: with a fresh install of Everquest II (before patching) everquest2.exe would actually run if I double-clicked on it! Of course since I wasn't patched the login servers didn't let me in. After patching running everquest2.exe only results in the usual nothing with the task using 50%cpu but no windows or animations, sound, no nothing.

This seems to be an indication that there is something in the patch process that is causing the conflict.

A guildmate suggested it may be a graphics card-related issue, and in searching on Google for "9800m gts everquest 2" I ran across this post in these forums discussing this exact issue:

http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/...topic_id=419771

I can't help but think that maybe if I could get the normal Launcher running correctly that my problems would go away, but I'm still running into lockup and error issues there.

So far no luck other than what is discussed above, but at this point I plan to beat this problem if it kills me.

Arador

There are a couple of things you should try.

1. right click the shortcut to EQ2 and select properties then on the shortcut tab click the advanced button down near the bottom. you want to tell EQ2 to run as "Administrator". If this doesn't fix your problem proceed to step 2.

2. right click the shortcut to EQ2 again and select the compatability tab. Tell EQ2 to run in Windows XP (service pack 2) compatability mode by checking the box.

3. If you are running a soundblaster sound card and are using Alchemy to get your EAX functionality repeat step 1 for Alchemy.

I hope this helps you out.

Wizard Thoarin

You will want to make sure that you have updated your card to the most up to date version that we support (found here: http://soe-ing.custhelp.com/cgi-bin.......p_topview=1)

Also, for Vista make sure the game is installed in the x86 Program Files folder. Default should be Program Files/Sony/Everquest 2.

You may even try unchecking the option to run with XP under the compatibility tab. The main portion of that tab that you are worried about is making sure it is running as an admin and that you are right clicking and saying "Run as Admin" when you open it in srtead of double clicking.

The EXACT same thing is happening to me. When you hit the launch button, the EverQuest2 exe spins up to about 26 Mb RAM usage, then CPU usage drops to 0% and nothing happens.

I too have tried all the suggested Vista 64 fixes (and I turned off UAC when I built this machine) including moving the eq2 directory with no luck at all.

Really frustrating...I'm beginning to think somebody doesn't want me to come back to the game.

Got it!

I figured out why I'm having the problem after reading this post:

http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/...topic_id=445144

Wondering if it was a sound driver issue, I disabled the Conexant Sound Driver in the laptop's Device Manager. I was overjoyed to discover that this allowed everquest2.exe to boot up every time. Re-enabling sound caused the application to hang every time. Mystery solved!

I've tried both 32-bit and 64-bit driver upgrades for this device, so far with no luck, but now that I know what the problem is the solution should hopefully present itself at some point.

It's probably just that Everquest 2 and many 64-bit device drivers just don't get along well. Hopefully this will be corrected soon.

Arador

Well, that worked for me too.

Disappointing though, I always thought the music/sounds were one of the high points of EQ2. I hope someone will resolve this soon. >_<

More than likly this is due because your running EverQuest 2 in Admin Mode while your running your sound drivers in Normal mode.

I run Windows Vista 64bit and I too have a Creative Sound Blaster Card and it runs fine on my computer no problems and loads up fine.

Glad to see you guys got it working for you. you can always try the new version of the driver and install them in Admin mode and set them to run in Admin mode too and see if it works.

Wish I could get Vista to install the generic driver for me, but no such luck.

I was also really hoping this patch would fix it, but nothing.

Anyone have any other suggestions or am I just hooped because I don't have a creative sound card?

Interesting update to this - I tried removing my sound card and only enabling onboard sound, and the problem still occurs.

Seems like EQ2 has a fit any time it detects any sort of sound output device in Vista 64 for me.

The splash screen leading into the not the same client thing is caused by using the eq2.exe instead of the station launcher. Please try the station launcher. Make certain to apply the special admin steps that have been descibed above. I will include them here. First here3 is the link to the station launcher (very brief download)

<a href="<a">Station Launcher

and of course the Vista UAC walk around. These steps MUST be applied to the station launcher before it will successfully download your new patch.

1.Right click on the program launch icon

2. Left click on "Properties".

3. In the new window that pops up click on the "Compatibility" tab.

4. In the "Compatibility Mode" area check the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"

5. In the drop down list make certain that "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" is selected.

6. Under "Privilege Level" make certain that the box next to "Run this program as administrator" is checked.

7.Click on "Apply" then click on "Ok".

8.Right click on the icon and select "Run as Administrator"

You can also go to your EQ2 directory in Sony in C drive and follow the steps below:

1.Right click on the EQ2 folder.

2.Select the Security tab.

3.Highlight each account in the box on the top of the page one at a time.

4.In the lower box make certain that all of the check boxes are set for allow.

5.Do this for each account in the upper list.

6.Hit accept and close.

Tried all those with no luck.

The issue seems to be with the EverQuest2.exe application (so the actual game rather than the launcher). When launched from the standard launcher or from the new launcher, it will use up some CPU for a short time, then drop down to zero CPU usage with about 26Mb RAM used. At no point does the EQ2 game window actually open, nor do any errors or crash logs get generated.

However, if I disable my sound card, then it launches with no problems.

My dxdiag is above.
