Hey, I'm just getting started leveling a Wizard(lvl 30ish) and I'm trying to figure out how +spell dmg on equiptment compares to int. Point for point, which should I be going for as I choose what items to use? I can't seem to find a formula for how much dmg int exactly adds to your spells so needless to say I'm a bit confused. The stickied guide here in this forum speaks of +spell dmg with the assumption that the player is int capped, which obviously I'm not. All I'm trying to figure out here is if the choice comes down to a bit more +spell dmg or a bit more int on an item, which would be more more beneficial to a leveling wizard?

Few points here, few points there - it's not going to make a huge difference leveling. Most of the things that have the +spell are going to have some INT anyway.

The cap on INT is 1220 once you're at 80, and when you start to get the nifty gear, you should be near or over that cap in a group/raid setting. You mostly need to look for some spell crit & damage at that point.

If you do need some numbers, 100 INT is roughly a 10% increase.

The Int cap is always (Level*15)+20 So at 30 it would be 470 Int, and the closer you are to the cap the less the Int will affect damage. (Diminishing returns etc) As the above poster said, most +spell gear should have int on as well. When levelling you shouldn't expect to be near the cap all the time, but so long as you have a fair amount you shouldn't need to worry. Soon as you start seeing +Spell crit gear too start taking that too.

My wizard is 71 and nowhere near the cap for Int (542 Int), but I've got about +277 in spell damage gear. If I went for my best +Int gear I'd still only end up around 800 Int (sucks to be a solo player in a raid-biased game).

Shouldn't the difference show up in the spell tooltip? Try equipping different gear and see how the damage for the spell changes.
