I am running into a strange problem and was hopping someone here might have an idea.

I can log into the character selection screen without any issues, however when I attempt to actually log in a character, the computer will freeze at "updating environment map" every time. After about 2 weeks of working through this issue, I have been able to narrow down the issue to a networking issue.

I built a small Linux based server and configured it as a router (wireless connection) and by using that I can connect using a wired Ethernet port on the computer. This allows me to log in and play with no issues at all. When I go back to the wireless connection directly to the primary router however, I again freeze at "updating environment map".

I have tested this using 3 different wireless cards and 3 different routers in multiple different combinations. All produce the exact same results. Is their any known issues with the interface of EQ2 with wireless network cards specifically in a 64bit environment? I was able to run using all the same hardware on XP with no errors.

While running the 2nd router is working, it is certainly not the optimal method I would like to use just to play EQ2. I would be happy to hear any input any of you may have on the problem.

Greetings,

The game doesn't have any issues with a wireless connection and Vista, usually. That type of connection/OS can cause downloading issues, but not a crashing issue like the one you're experiencing.

You might want to try setting up one of those routers for port forwarding to see if that resolves the issue. The following site has great information about router configuration:

http://www.portforward.com/english/...routerindex.htmSimply select the router you are using, then select the 'skip this advertisement' button in the upper right, and finally select Everquest 2 on the following page. You will then be presented with a walkthrough on how to forward the correct ports. Please respond if you need any further assistance.

The port forwarding did not reult in any changes, to be safe I also tested DMZ and had the same result. I am not overly surprised this did not correct the issue as the server I am routing traffic through now to play is limited by the same port forwarding rules as this computer is. Also that it worked fine in XP and Vista 32 and its just Vista 64 thats causing the issue.

I am still looking through the OS itself to see if the issue could be located there rather then the interaction of eq2 with the OS, however so far every other application that requires a network connection is not having any difficulty at this time. The issue doesn't appear to be limited to either a specific manufaturer or wireless chipset either as the 3 different wireless cards are running 3 completely different chipsets and the routers (which I dont belive to be the issue) were also all very different.

Is there any way to run EQ2 in a debugging mode so that I can atleast see what its attempting to do when the computer crashes?

It is actually hard locking the computer completely. No BSOD or crash to desktop. I have to pull the power.

Ok, if it's freezing the whole computer then it probably isn't related to the connection. Could you post the first section of your DXdiag so that we can check on your computer specs and driver information?

Uninstalling and updating your graphics card drivers would be a good first step, assuming they are somewhat out of date.

I can provide the information when I am back at a computer, however a graphics drive issue would not explain why EQ2 plays perfectly fine on a wired network connection and then failes on a wireless connection. I do mean this very litterally. If I am connected using wireless it will freeze, however if I simply remove the route from the wireless card and use a wired network connection, the game plays perfectly. The graphics engine should not differentiate between using a wireless or wired network connection. This is specifically why the issue is so frustrating. If the game simply failed in general on Vista 64, I would have more things to investigate, however having it fail ONLY when connected via wireless network connection (Note 3 different wireless cards all using vender shipped drivers as well as newest available drives).
