I do appreciate the help you all gave me on my other thread. I know that this question will contain some debate and so did not want to muddy that thread, which I may use later to garner additional real world information.

Given the fact that threat changes are coming.

We are Paladins.

We are not raid tanks now.

It sounds like we are not losing any abilities we had before except for Amends (I will truely miss that ability).

I see a lot of people worrying about the future. In my other thread I asked some basic questions relating to our abilty to tank in a group setting. It sounds like we should not have an issue doing this.

Are you worried because we will lose our ability to be a group tank?

Are you wanting to gain the ability to raid tank? (see mini rant at the bottom)

Why am I seeing so many people worried about our class?

Is it just that we don't know where we will be in the future?

While this is an open discussion I hope that people will keep things civil. Histrionics simply do not help. I do see the devs listening and making changes based on what is said. A civil discussion will get their attention and keep it much better then ranting and raving.

Now that I said that here goes the mini rant I spoke of earlier. In my guild we are not big enough yet to go to VP but we do have a raid alliance that is clearing it. I have been told that a pally is not welcome except for his mythical update and that this wont change for quite a while.

This rant is not against the devs though. I simply do not believe that they would make a zone where any tank could not tank mobs in that zone. Any tank should be able to do it. I believe that it may be very different to use a monk or pally instead of a guard or bruiser and that it would take time to learn the new way to do it. I believe that people don't want to learn it.

I do think that the devs could make it easier for raid leaders to see the value if a way was found to force the use of certain kinds of tanks (similar to the sisters in SoH but not with so much chaos lol). After a while raid leaders will get the idea that any tank can tank any zone.

I truely hope that the devs have not decided that a specific tank class should be a requirement in a raid. I hope that it is more like grouping, grab a tank and go. I have heard that their are a couple tank classes that need help in the new expansion but that can be fixed.

As a default, my mind is set. Any tank should be able to tank any zone given the same level of gear for each one.

You can debate the fact that any tank should be able to tank any zone just don't whine about it. If a dev wanted to verify in this thread that what I said is true and that it will be true for all future content I would be happy. Would some adjustments (like threat changes) be required to make this happen? Is that why we see these changes? I don't know and neother do you. But it would be nice to hear from a dev that my concept of how things should be is correct.

I have given you all quite a few things to debate. Please be clear on your topic. No rants. Be civil.

Thanks everyone!

Few tanks of any stripe are enthusiastic about these changes. A few Guardians here and there, but that's really about it. The people who seem to think it's a great idea are people who don't really understand what these changes mean. I've played with the changes on Test, so to answer your questions:

1. No, Paladins won't lose their ability to be a group tank. In fact, these changes will make fighters "stickier" and mediocre players will find it easier to hold aggro in groups. No more need to worry about damage output, spell rotation and casting order, just spam those taunts. That holds true for Paladins and any of the other plate tanks.

2. I am a raid tank, and will remain a raid tank. I don't think that most guilds are just going to throw out their experienced and geared/mastered OTs; I know mine isn't. That said, it will be much more difficult for new Paladins to break into raiding because there's no clear role for them. The impact of GU51 will be much harder on the next genration of Paladins who would like to raid. As a side note, I know that some guilds had considered SKs as alternatives, but as things have panned out over the last month, they're getting a vigorous beating with the nerfstick and won't be the FOTM class any longer. So, some raiding guilds are falling back to looking at Berserkers to fill their OT slots. What is old becomes new again.

3 & 4. People are concerned largely because there's no clearly defined role for the "new and improved" Paladin. And when developers have been asked what their vision for the class really is, all that's heard are the crickets chirping. The class has only been described as a "close second" to the Guardian, but then what raid force wants to bring in a new player who's class is second best in anything?

The sky isn't falling, but in all honesty it doesn't look terribly good. If the changes on Test are published, and a new player came to me and asked if a Paladin would be a good class to play, I'd have to say no; not if you want to get into serious end-game raiding and be able to experience all of the content. It's pretty much a class that will be relegated to roleplayers, soloers (although the SK would still be better for that) and for casual groupers.
