Just bought it today, on a whim. I have been wanting to start playing an MMO, preferably WoW because a friend of mine plays it and it looks pretty dope.

But for now, EQ 2 will do.

So I was wondering if anyone could give me some good starting tips and whatnot about anything in the game.

Whoa, where to begin.

I suppose the first thing to ask is what is it you are looking to find? What play-style appeals to you? Do you enjoy playing as part of a group, or are you drawn to a more solitary lifestyle? MMORPGs can accomodate both, and everything in between, but there are some character classes that are better suited to solo play, and others more suited to group play.

Do you wish to play only against the computer-generated monsters, (called MOBs [a term which goes back to the infancy of MMOs, and is short for 'mobiles])? Such a play style is called PvE (Player vs. Environment).

There is also another style of play where you play not only against the MOBs of the computer generated world, but also against other players as well. Such a play style is called PvP (Player vs. Player).

There are specialty servers for PvP.

Do you want to play an MMO as a game, where you are out to beat the clever tricks and monsters of the designers, or do you wish to assume an in-game persona, and play you character as if it were an alter-ego. Such play style is called roleplaying, and there are specialty servers for that as well.

So the first thing to do is give a little info on your expectations.

As far as learning the mechanics of the game (how to run/walk, buy/sell, talk and fight) there is a introductory area that guides new players through these basics quite efficiently.

Welcome to Norrath!

We are a friendly group here and are very willing to answer your questions, both in-game and on the forums.

I'd suggest reading through the posts linked in the Consolidated Tips, Tricks, and New Player Questions Thread in the Tips, Tricks, and New Player Questions Forum. That's a great starting point.

If you will be playing PVP (player vs. player), then you should definitely read the Consolidated PvP Discussion Thread in the PVP Discussion Forum.

Well, I have never played games online, on PC or on any other console, because im just not a big fan of it all. This is all a new experience to me. I would say solitary, although im sure it would be fun to play in a group, so im somewhere in between.

I prefer PVE. Why? Im not sure, but it just sounds more appealing to me, and my style of playing would probably pertain to as an alter ego. Usually in games where a player is given choices and freedom I usually go for the "darker side" when creating my characters.

I appreciate your help and I look forward to any and all advice you can give!

Everquest II is a good choice, welcome to the community. Here some hints from me, I may post more later. Don't hesitate to ask questions. - Get the basic concepts (zones, dungeons, buying, selling, housing, death/resurrection, repairs etc) from the thread mentioned above. - Choose the class you play very carefully, you can't change it later, only reroll a new character. EQ2 has a lot (24) different classes, many of them with quite unique abilities and different roles in the game and groups/raids. Try to define your playstyle and the goals you have in this game and choose your class accordingly. A good way to test a class is just to level a character 1-2 hours and look what abilities you get and how they suit you. If it does not suit you, just delete the character and level a new one. - This game is already pretty inflated with lots of money and it's not easy for a new player to "build an existence" if he does not yet know the game mechanics. Higher level players will charge you an arm and a leg for items and services, because they have long forgotten how it feels playing with just a few silver or at most gold in your pocket. Here a few hints how to play this game to your advantage: - Practice harvesting raws and try to get as many rare materials as you can. They sell for nice prices to higher level players, who have the money but can't be bothered to farm in low level zones. The game will tell you, when you got a rare. - Same goes for collectibles (yellow sparkles with question marks above them), some of them sell for insane prices. Never sell them to the vendor before you checked the broker for how much they sell. - Never sell loot with the tag TREASURED or better to the vendor either. They all sell on the broker, and be it only to transmuters (a form of tradeskill), for much more than the vendor will give you. Find out the "transmuter threshold", i.e. the maximal price transmuters will buy items for (should be in the range between 1 and 5 gold depending on the server) and tag all items at least at this price. Compare that with the few measly silver the vendor would give you. - Don't bother putting items less than TREASURED on the broker. They won't sell. An exception are harvested raws. - Try to not undercut prices, that's bad practice and won't make you friends. At least match the lowest bidder. For some items (namely collectibles), of which are only few for sale, it might even pay off to tag them higher and just wait. Eventually the cheaper ones will be sold and now you can get much more money for them. - If you got your first money, don't bother buying armor or weapons with it. You get sufficiently of them from quests, and you will outlevel them very fast anyway. Spells/abilities are an option, however you will find many Adept I books of your own abilities in loot chests (smart loot), so buy only essential things. Instead spend money on bigger bags and crates (for bank and broker) and a bigger house (for yet more broker slots). Big bags and crates will make your life so much easier.

- (edit) Oh, and before I forget: Don't rush with leveling. EQ2 has quite a lot enjoyable low level content, which helps you to learn your way around in Norrath, which is vast.

- Find a good guild.

I might also add that all MMOs are rather complex forms of entertainment, and for a brand new player it can be very confusing and overwhelming. Even the terms used to describe things may be unfamiliar. It can become so frustrating that you may feel as if it is not worth the bother.

So:

Rule one: Ask questions. You already have that one down, or you wouldn't be here. No question is too embarrassing to ask. We all know the basic commands so well that we forget that someone new to the game may not even know how to exit the game, or how to walk or talk.

Rule two: Don't become discouraged. It is a large learning curve, but the concepts will become familiar to you once you get used to them. These concepts will carry over to other MMOs as well. Once you realize that it is possible to 'jump' or 'crouch' or 'swim', or 'dance' in EQ2, then you realize that it is possible to do those types of things in other MMOs as well. Only the commands and annimations are different.

Rule three: Read. There is a MASSIVE amount of information on how to do just about anything in any MMO on the games forums. EQ2 is especially good at providing information. Troll through the various forums on servers, races, classes, play strategies, etc., and remember rule one.

Rule four: Take it slow and easy. Enjoy the game. These games have so much depth to them and things to discover that it will take your breath away. Even after playing EQ2 for nearly six years, and reaching the top levels several times over, I STILL find things I missed or that were newly added, everytime I start another character. You should feel no need to rush through this game to reach the end game. New players arrive all the time, and old players roll up new characters.

My character name is Thornn on the Venekor PvP server. Most players have multiple characters, as do I and as you will as well. The one(s) they play most often are referred to as their 'main', and the ones they play less often are referred to as their 'alts' (alternatives). Feel free to contact me in game if you choose Venekor.

Once logged into the game,

To see if a character is on, type: /w all Thornn

To add Thornn to your 'friends' list type: /friend Thornn

To talk to Thornn in game (assuming he is not standing close to you), type: /t Thornn Hello, my name is Daemon Hunting, and I was wondering if you have the time to answer a question I have. (etc)

Again, welcome, and the best of luck to you. I think you are ready to roll up a character and get your feet wet. Once in the game the questions will become very evident to you.

Remember that the big letter E button you see on your screen opens a drop down menu to adjust the game settings, find help, and exit (camp) the game.
