View Full Version : Problem with my 7600 GT 256mb

Now, something like this used to happen on my old rig but not to the extreme that its happening now. I'd be playing and my computer would suddenly freeze for a minute or so (which sometimes got me killed) and then it would start as though nothing happened. No error messages or anything. But with my new rig its more extreme. It not only freezes, but the screen goes black, the computer spins up, then it unfreezes, I can see the image again and a message appears on my screen saying that there was an error with the graphics driver and it had to restart. And then everything goes back to normal until it does it again in a half hour to an hour. Honestly, its scaring me a little bit. I can't afford to replace any parts in this computer atm. It cost me enough to buy them in the first place. Thats why I haven't overclocked even though I want to. I'm trying to figure out what the problem is without having to buy a new card (I'm sure buying the new one will solve the problem). I have planned to buy a 4870 1gb in the near future but I have to pay off the credit card first before I can do it which means its going to be months. Do you have any ideas? Do you think that the hardware might be the problem? Or the driver? Its happened with at least two different drivers now so I'm inclined to say that it isn't the driver.

I've looked for a possible solution on the EQ2 board but can't find anything.

I'm scared my new rig is going to get fried by a badly behaving 7600 GT suddenly having a fit. A computer can't keep doing what this one is making it do without eventually having problems.

Hi Moirae!

/wave

I'd say it was simply the chipset on your card being old and tired. Even silicon degrades over time, and has a 'shelf-life' so to speak.

Whoa guys, overreacting much?

As for elsewhere, I posted it on the xtremesystems forums but no one has answered. I got a reply on the MMORPG forums where basically everyone said to just buy a new one because silicon degrades over time.

I have the newest drivers so either the drivers are crap (which I don't think they are because it would happen at other times and you'd be hearing alot of complaints on here) or its just old and slowly dying.

Thanks for your help.

Before buying a new card I would suggest running a graphics stress test like 3dmark(http://www.futuremark.com/) to see if you run into a similar issue.

I would definitely try several different driver versions before giving up on the card. The most recent drivers aren't always the best option so uninstalling and trying some older versions may correct the issue. I would also suggest setting down some of your performance options in game, specifically the particle effects and water animation. If the problem still persists at that point then it might be time to look for a different graphics card.

I stated it was wrong to write off hardware without testing and further commented that I do not think it appropriate to assume that I or anybody else is psychic and thus know about posts on other forums that you may have made, especially when they could easily have linked it in their post.

As for elsewhere, I posted it on the xtremesystems forums but no one has answered. I simply stated that without further testing and additional information it was rash of Darwa to state that your gfx card was probably broken.

I have the newest drivers so either the drivers are crap (which I don't think they are because it would happen at other times and you'd be hearing alot of complaints on here) or its just old and slowly dying.

You did clear out the old ones first yes?

Did you miss the part where I said this was a NEW rig?

No, I also didn't miss the part where you stated it has happened with at least two drivers, as such I asked whether you had cleaned the old ones out properly first.

As in, less than a month old.
