I am about to upgrade my computer and and wondering about the video card. Currently I have an AMD Opteron 185, 4GB DDR 400 @ CL 2-3-2-5, and ATI X1900XTX on 24" LCD @ 1920x1200.

I am upgrading to a Phenom II 940 (intend to OC), 4GB DDR2 1066 @ CL 5-5-5-15.

My question is: With EQ2 being so CPU bound, will it be worth upgrading the video card yet? I was thinking about either a 4870 or 4870x2, but I don't want to get too high in the cost area. If there isn't a huge increase in performance (in EQ2 only here), should I just stick with the X1900XTX for now, and upgrade later?

the 4870 will be quite a bit faster in eq2, and every other modern game at that resolution, also allows you to run higher anti-aliasing etc

You will probably see an increase in performance, but it wont be proportional to the cost increase. The CPU will still be the bottleneck either way. If you're upgrading specificaly for EQ2 then I would avoid the 4870x2 in favor of the 4870 since the game was not designed to take advantage of multiple GPUs.

Thanks y'all!

I'm going with the 4870 for now, and I figured I could add a x2 later for tri-crossfire when the prices come down.

Daniel, when does SOE plan to add multi-gpu support (and better mult-cpu support)? If this isn't something they are actively persuing, then they are insanely stupid...
