Microsoft removed Directsound with Vista, which required people to use a program called Creative Alchemy to continue to get hardware accelerated sound.

The advantage of hardware accelerated sound is not so much about CPU usage as it is about EQ2 just doesn't do near as many sound related things using Miles sound vs using EAX mode. For example take the bird sound in some Qeynos zones - it is quite noticeable under EAX, but absent when using Miles as the sound provider. Even your footsteps sound better in EAX mode.

Now with Windows 7, even Creative Alchemy can't get sound to work with EQ2, so you have no way to get hardware accelerated sound. Is it at all possible for EQ2's sound system to be changed from DirectSound to OpenAL? Then everybody would get the same quality of audio no matter what OS they are using.
