I was looking at forum suggestions on AA's these days. No one seems to suggest the STA line for Static Shield... however last I played it seemed that Static Shield was a no brainer must-do...

Did something change?

None of the wizards I see use static shield. It's more of a solo type deal. All of the good high level wizards on our server raid and have more of a +crit and +reuse time approach.

I use it but then I tend to solo.

Same as above. Good for solo'ing, or leveling up

IMO its not even useful for leveling up. In order for it to trigger, the mob needs to attack you with a melee weapon (spells do not trigger it). If a mob is attacking you with a melee weapon, you are too close.

While some sorcerers do like the idea of a battlemage, taking a few hits from mobs etc, it is not a viable way to spec a sorcerer for any reason other than flavour.

The best spec for solo leveling is a pure DPS spec (manaburn if you want to solo names, otherwise str - wis lines in the sorcerer tree, and maxing out Enhance: Ice Comet by level 50 in the cold line of the wizard tree, 5 points in Root Mastery in the Shadows tree would not be a bad idea either). killing a mob before it reaches you is far safer and more effecient than killing a mob at melee range.

If you want to go down the sta line for the way that a sorcerer with that spec plays, go for it, but its not the best way to spend points in terms of making you a better character.
