View Full Version : EQ2 causing very high system temperatures (65C)

Never have this problem with any other game, Fallout 3 runs at max settings at 50C, for example. Why is EQ2 doing this to my system, and is there any way I can fix it? It seems like no matter what settings I put the graphics at, it always causes this ridiculous high temperature.

Specs:

Windows Vista x64Intel Core 2 Quad, 2.83 Ghz4GB RamNvidia GeForce GTX 260

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I may just be a fool and not know what I am really talking about but...

I do think EQ2 doesn't use 4 cores. It was only designed to run on 1 more powerful core. So having quad core doesn't really do anything for EQ2, but it does help your system do other things while running EQ2.

What kind of Cooling do you have in your computer?

What does Task manager say is happening when you have eq2 up?

My system doesn't really have this problem, so I am not entirely sure what it might b, having task manager up may help you in figuring it out.

Unless you're on a laptop, temperature shouldn't be an issue. If you're on a commercial purchased machine (Dell, Gateway, etc) and you're overheating on a desktop, then you should probably contact their support. I'm on a Dell with factory standard fans on a XPS and no overheating issues.

On the other hand.. did you go in and overclock your processor yourself? If so.. beat your head against the wall repeatedly because your warantee is now void and game support won't touch your problem.

Eq2 does put a lot of the work on the cpu, they are slowly shifting more graphic functions to the gpu but it is probably working your cpu harder than most games. 65 might be high but you shouldnt be getting temp related problems at that. If your not crashing dont worry about it.

Custom build machine, not overclocked. I'm not too worried as the Q9550 can support 70C+, but it's a bit odd that far more taxing games don't bring it nearly this high. It seems like EQ2 polls each of the cores even if it isnt using it, which is causing a steady temperature buildup.

I think it might have something to do with the bolded.

I have a custom-built machine, which runs both Fallout 3 & EQ2 on very high graphics settings with no discernible temperature difference between them.

I have a similar issue, and a quad core and crossfired video. I have foudn that I run cooler in the same settings when in windowed mode

For me running EQ2, cpu never goes above 50C (AMD x2 4200+) and video card rarely pushes 65C (8800 GT), and the card is overclocked too, that same program also allows you to crank up the fan speed on it.

Make sure to have good fans

I have owned a lot of cards through the years and in my experiance Nvidia cards tend to run warm. My current card is a 8800gt oc. That means it came from the factory overclocked. When running EQ2 or most other graphic intense games it runs anywhere from 65 c - 73 c. From my understanding this particular card is safe up to 109 c. Would I ever let it get that high? No! I use a great program called Rivatuner to control my fan speeds. It takes a bit of setting up but now my fans get stronger as my card gets warmer. I don't go above 75c now with the fans at 100% which makes me feel a bit more at ease.

Here is the link for the program

http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=rivatuner

If its an EVGA brand card, x82, you should go with the overclocking program available for free on their website. Works wonders

I know EQ2 places a lot of the stress on the CPU. Is the CPU fan working properly? Perhaps you need another? That could explain the difference (CPU fan is suboptimal, so EQ2, which places a higher strain on the CPU, runs hotter.)

<35c with EQ2 and a room temp of 70f. What sort of processor cooling are you using? Not a stock fan & sink, I hope. If so, I'd start there.

Yes, I'm a huge fan of ... fans.
