View Full Version : Obelisks are anchors, so why...

The latest preveiw talking about the void mentions finally what/why the obelisks are anchoring (at least the first I'm hearing of it). So why do the shadowmen consume and destroy worlds? According to the preveiw they are forever trapped in the void, but have managed to prevent non-exsistance by anchoring using possesed people to build the obelisks.

By the fact they destroy the worlds seems to exclude the possibility they are possesing people as a means of escape. The fact the mutate and use the populations as minions seems to exclude the fact they do it for "food"... So why do they destroy worlds if once they have obelisks up they are fairly safe?

The Void has no tangable connection with Norrath or any other planets they inhabit. They have to anchor themselves to the planet in order to be able to invade it on a large scale.

I don't think it's accurate to say that the Obelisks themselves are anchors themselves, as TSO introduces the zones of "The Obelisk of Ahkzul" and "The Anchor of Bazzul."

At any rate, I suppose that if we could find a way to destroy the Obelisks (which so far nothing has proven effective as found by Timberclang's findings vol. 98,) we could prevent them from easily entering Norrath.

The shadowmen who live there are no exception to this ultimate destruction, so they need to continue finding resources just to survive.

So the answer is some combination of the above.

I don't think that the distruction of worlds is a side effect of the void invasion not the goal. It's kinda like getting side swiped by a black hole, the black hole did not intened to rip your planet apart atom by atom it just happened to pass close enough to cause this to happen.

The void creatures are trying to survive so they anchor themselfs to worlds, those worlds fight back... noone likes being invaded, this requires them to astablish more anchors(to get larger armies through), eventually the connection to the void is so strong the Anchors start pulling stuff back into the void, and pulling the world it is anchored to apart.

That they still continue to exist at all means that tehre is an event horizon of some sorts in the void, I'm guessing that is where they make their residence?

If they were any other type of race, they could probably be reasoned with and allowed to stay on worlds outside of the void, but they are bound to the void regardless, so anything they find will always only be temporary.

The way I understood it when I read the preview was this; Everything is slowly gravitated toward the center of the void (the black hole). So they had to jump from one asteroid to anther, but they figured out how to "anchor" themselves on to worlds thus not being sucked into the center. I picture the obelisks' as magnets; the one in the void is being "pulled" equally by the obelisk on Norath (or whatever other worlds) to keep it from entering into the hole. Otherwise it would be counter productive to build a massive palace/tower just for it to be eaten in a few weeks.

maybe they don't 'mean' to destroy worlds since they need them to survive.

But a bit like cats with mices. cats kill and eat mice to survive. void creatures kill and eat to survive (in a way coz they are still corrupted).

but worlds get destroyed because of their connection with the void. they get corrupted, like in lesser faydark.

I see them a bit like Dr frankeinstein .. trying to find how to stay alive. not caring about other species, about "destruction" of worlds. they are so focused on their studies that nothing else maters.

but also they must be a bit like ghost hating all living. They must hate all those out of the void coz they are out of it.
