So this weekend I jumped around different games, and turned Vanguard on, and reactivated my account with the $30 a month thing (I really wish they allowed for a 6 month thing for like $25 a month ).

Then I turned on EQ2 and thought.. meh, why not give it a shot.

So I did a ton of research. It was a bit difficult to find up to date info (not as hard as Vanguard) and nearly impossible to find comparing guides between races and classes, so took me a bit longer.

I have a level 20 something Wood Elf Necro on the RP server. But I really didn't feel the ... Necro.

Illusionist was my choice of class. So I started up a Dark Elf Coercer (I like betrayal ) Then I just didn't like his appearance... neither the new one or the old one.

So I thought... What about Troll, or Ogre, or something else... and nadda. I just didn't feel anything.

I ended up going Barbarian.

Starting 12 Int and like 15 or so Wisdom...

I am having some fun, but I notice I am not doing as much damage as I did with my Dark Elf (even though he was a coercer).

So the question is... Did I set myself up for failure?

As soon as you wear decent gear dimishing returns will kick in and race won't matter that much. Every race can succeed on every class, depending on gear and player skill. That being said some racial traits are more attractive than others, depending on your class. Having a +spell crit as a racial trait is nice if you intend to play a caster for instance. In the long run you won't completely [Removed for Content] yourself as a barbarian, but if you fit in the min/maxer mentality then you should pick a caster friendly race. If you want to push your toon to the last extra bit of dps and blablabla, better pick another race.

You think I will be pushed out of certain circles later in the game because I am starting at 24 less points than the top casting races and that I don't have spell crit abilities or + damage cause I am a barbarian?

Be honest, that is what I am looking for.

It's completely possible to be a good Illusionist as any race. Yes, certain races get bonuses that are more "class fulfilling" for Illusionists than Barbarians. The biggest determining factor in how far you go is how good you are. The class is fine, any race will do, but you have to know what you are doing and do it well.If you have to be at the absolute bleeding edge to be happy, fine, re-roll now. Otherwise, learning to be a good Illusionist will serve you better in the end.

Naw, I am not a Min/Maxer.. not that is bad or anything being one, I just like to ensure my character will be effective.

I don't mind having to work for my bread, so long as it bears fruit towards the end and become just as effective as everyone else.

That sound possible?

Race is pretty much totally irrelevant. Obviously some of the abilities one race gets favours certain classes over others but ultimately gear renders it all fairly meaningless.Play what you like most.
Every race is effective as any class. Some classes just excel as certain races.

Thanks.

I was pretty worried about it. If the stats aren't going to be a huge killer, Hopefully I will be ok.

Getting started will probably be rough until I enough +int and +wis items to make my life easier. But I can't see that happening for a while.

It only affects your resists, and only in a very minor way. When leveling, there is INT and there is INT. With a side of INT.

Yes int all the way, and maybe sta for survivability. Maybe little agi if you like tanking the mobs too :p
