I decided to roll a Defiler after seeing that they were such powerful healers, compared to my former main, a Fury. After some time playing my Defiler, I've decided to do a write up on some general information on achievements, spells, and items for the younger Defilers out there.

Achievements

Achievements weren't around for the original 1-60 trek, so don't think you'll [Removed for Content] yourself by avoiding the healing achievements at first. Save those for later - you're more than capable of healing without any healing achievements in the lower levels. I highly recommend getting the INT line: 4,8,8. The spell critical and Rabies DoT will be indispensible for leveling solo, and you're going to be doing at least a little of that. Next I advise getting Enhance: Malaise 5, and Enhance: Fuliginous Sphere 5. This will enable you to solo even better. Next, go back to the shaman tree and get the stamina line: 4,4,6,8,2 or 4,4,8,6,2. The difference will be negligible, but the end-line Coagulate buff is very important. By now you should be around level 50 ish. Go back to the Defiler tree and get Enhance: Maelstrom of Dismay 5, Fearful Chant 3, Emergency Warding 5, Shroud 5, Eerie Avenger 3, Words of the Ancestors 5, and Soul Ward. By now you should be 70 or so, and can spend up to 70 in each tree instead of 50. Now, get Forced Cannibalize 5, and Cannibalize right below that. By now, the INT line's effectiveness has greatly diminished, and you might consider resetting.

At level 80, I have 4,4,8,7,2 in STR, 4,4,4,8 in AGI, and 4,4,6,8,2 in STA. For the Defiler tree, get the ones mentioned above, and 5 in each of the debuff (Cursing) abilities except the one for Fear. Get Curseweaving, and 5 in Tendrils of Fear.

Spell Usage

It's very important to learn to use your Cannibalize achievement, and Forced Cannibalize DoT/power heal spells. With these two spells, you can easily maintain your power all by yourself. This is one of the hallmark Defiler defining traits. Make good use of it! Because of these two spells, you can completely shun items with power regeneration on them in favor of items with heal crits and heal amount. This will help you to become a very, very powerful healer.

Items

Mana Leak items are your friend! When running through the Kunark quests, you'll come across a couple of items that have the effect called Mana Leak. I didn't understand the importance of this right away, but you will quickly learn it is invaluable. Mana Leak items drain some of your power and give it to group mates when you cast healing spells. Although it seems a bad idea to drain your power, remember your spell Shroud of Armor with the regenerating ward against magical damage? Guess what! It absorbs the drain. Essentially you can refresh some power for your group mates at NO COST! Also, the icing on the cake is that it can also proc and heal your power as well. These items are fantastic when you need a little extra power in your group because you don't have an enchanter or bard. You might not want to wear these all the time, but definitely keep them in your bags and use them when your group is slowing down because someone is out of power - it will never be you, it'll be someone else! I have 2 Mana Leak items, Devoured-Hide Armguards and Bronze and Pearl Inlaid Earcuff. There are others out there though - look for them!

Keep an eye out for items that have the Replenishing Heal effect. Whenever you heal people it will proc a small power-regen buff on them. It's quite small, but it does help.

Also if you'd like to do even better, do the blue-shiny collection quest from Chardok. Check the broker for "chokidai collar" collection items. It gives a belt that procs a group power-heal for around 100 points.

Even more important than anything else, you need to find at least a couple of items with Overloaded Heal on them. They proc a group heal whenever you cast any healing spell. As Defilers, we're not very good at replenishing lost health across multiple people. Overloaded Heal items help fill in for this weakness.

With the STR line, and some of the kinds of mana items I mentioned above, you can not only be a powerful healer, but a considerably good support class for your group mates. I hope this is helpful to somebody. Good luck all ye Defilers!

I actually didn't realize mana leak and Shroud of Armor. I knew power drain effects were absorbed by wards, however, but never made the connection to mana leak effects. So, that taught me something new too!

I will amend to this guide that the WIS line is very important. As a shaman, reuse time is king. I would put it as our most important factor as a healer. I like using Ritual Alacrity, but if nothing else I would go 4/4/4/8 on WIS at least. The 2nd WIS line ability, Ritual, also is handy for giving a boost to our wards/heals when used. I have the same AA setup as the above, only WIS instead of STR. I believe defilers that choose to go with STR drop either AGI or STA (I like fast cures, so I'd consider dropping AGI if anything), but the 8% reuse increaser in WIS is vital to both mystics and defilers.

I strongly believe you cannot possibly do without the stamina line Coagulate buff. The extra HP from it might not be immediately visible, but it has saved my own life and people in my group countless times. At 80, it gives your group almost an extra 1200 HP! The AGI line gives you heal crits, which is also essential, since healing is at the core of the class. Personally, I've never had the need for quicker reuse speeds from the WIS line, but I guess it'd make a valid 3rd line choice instead of STR. AGI & STA lines are indespensible in my opinion though. The third line is less important, and has greater flexibility.

Extra wards will blow away any heal crits or bonuses to healing. And casters and MT's abolutely love ritual of alacrity. This spell is just as good as jester's cap and needs to be utilized. It can be cast more often than Jester's also.

Then I would suggest getting Either Agi or Str. If you want to bother with the pet go for str as he will give you good ward bonus's and ae blockers. I myself use agility for heal crits. I think after the expansion comes out then Strength line will be preferred because there are more pet aa's coming

Lastly I would go Stamina line just like you have it. I disagree that coagulate is so important. It will save your life a few times but remember the extra hp it gives you will be unmitigated damage. When someone is lying unconscious they have no mitigation and 1100 hp won't make much of a difference there.

As for defiler line - Soul ward - curseweaving, and cannabalize - then play with the extra points as you choose.

Spell Usage

It's very important to learn to use your Cannibalize achievement, and Forced Cannibalize DoT/power heal spells. This will help you to become a very, very powerful healer.

I disagree here. What I suggest is saving all your jewelry from RoK quests you get that have Soulsiphon, Manawell, and replenishing heal. I saved 4 pieces and I just put them on for mana intensive fights and NEVER (even casting nonstop with tons of spell haste) run out of mana with them on. I never even get below 80 usually. IMHO these effects are the most underrated in a healers arsenal.

The reason I don't think cannabalize is that important is that it takes time to cast. Time you need to spend debuffing and warding if you are in a tough fight. In easier fights sure cannabalize is good especially if you don't have your mana gear, but in tough fights use the jewelry and not cannabalize!

Items

Mana Leak items are your friend! Also, NOTE - if you are using the nice heal shield from Hate called Brace of Corporeal Darklight - this effect will cancel out your stoneskin proc! You don't want that.. I suggest keeping one item for when the tank is a mana sieve like a zerker to help him out.

Keep an eye out for items that have the Replenishing Heal effect. Whenever you heal people it will proc a small power-regen buff on them. It's quite small, but it does help.

See above - and yes replenishing heal is the smallest return. Soulsiphon and Manawell are much much much better.

Also if you'd like to do even better, do the blue-shiny collection quest from Chardok. Check the broker for "chokidai collar" collection items. It gives a belt that procs a group power-heal for around 100 points.

These belts rock! They proc off any spell at all. Definitely something needed in yer arsenal

Even more important than anything else, you need to find at least a couple of items with Overloaded Heal on them. I only have 1 item currently but am working towards getting 2 at least.
With the STR line, and some of the kinds of mana items I mentioned above, you can not only be a powerful healer, but a considerably good support class for your group mates.
I'm surprised nobody's addressing the Defilers biggest weakness in my opinion. Spell casting times.

Highest items on my list to get now that I've betrayed are the

Crimson Robe of the Alendine http://www.lootdb.com/eq2/item/-659458117 and

Nagol's Treasure http://www.lootdb.com/eq2/item/-1766797669

With those two items you can achieve 15% spell haste, which will be huge.
