View Full Version : 170FPS in fullscreen vs 10FPS in windowed mode..

For the past month or so, I have been getting about 10FPS in game no matter what drivers I use nor what UI I use (I use profitReborn UI). Upon reformatting the computer that I play on fulltime, I noticed that when I go fullscreen mode I get a huge boost in FPS to over 150, yet when I go back to windowed mode I am back at 10FPS again. I don't understand why the game would run so great in fullscreen and yet drop off dramatically when I go to windowed mode, so any suggestions or known fixes would be appreciated.

<a href="mailto:

Running in windowed mode takes more resources from the CPU to process. This will cause a drop in FPS.

That is oddMy specs are pretty simular to yours...e8400 @ 3.6ghzGigabyte P35 mb8GB G.Skill DDR2EVGA 8800GT V.C.I only see a 2-5fps drop off when I run windowed mode. Sounds like you've tried everything, have you downloaded all the little vista updates? Some are not automatic... If you do a google for "Vista gaming updates" you should get a few to look for.Hope that helps...P.S. You could try setting affinity to processor core 1 too

I actually see an increase in performance when running in Window mode. LOL Who knows ...

I get a drop in FPS in windowed mode also. I just installed Vista Business 64 bit, and have a core-duo processor. In full screen I get 60 fps, while in windowed I get 30 fps. Looking at the Performace tab in the Windows Task Manager, I can see how hard each processor is working. Processor 1 of 2 is doing most of the work. In full screen, it's working at about 100%. In windowed mode, it's working at about 60%. I can see why FPS would go down if EQ is not using the processor to the fullest (for whatever reason). I tried increasing the priority of the process, but that didn't do anything. Has anyone seen this or know what I might try to get EQ to to hog the CPU and hopefully get my FPS up in windowed mode?

Btw, if I run EQ2 in Win XP on the same computer, running in windowed mode or full screen gives me the same performance, about 60 FPS. If I view the task manager in windowed mode for XP, processor 1 (of 2) is working at 100%.

If your fps drops dramatically when switching to windowed mode then you may want to turn off window transparency(vista) or remove some of the window effects(XP). I don't notice much of a change in FPS when switching to windowed mode on my home computer. It is running XP but I have the window effects scaled back to look like Windows 95. Setting the desktop as a solid color doesn't hurt either.

My FPS drops in windowed mode specially if I have another window like a browser on some page with some flash in the back ground... I minimize everything and bring up Eq2 and seams to be better .. not as good as fullscreen mode but better.

I recently went thru an upgrade (forced after a video card died) and after a fresh install [Removed for Content] the latest drivers I have a HUGE problem with running EQ2 in windowed mode that I have never had before playing EQ2 (since launch). I have always boxed so I play 95% of the time in windowed mode. I have always run EQ2 with 2 screens.

With EQ2 on balanced settings I am running at between 6 - 10 fps in windowed mode, swapping to full screen it jumps straight to 45 - 50 fps. I have turned all Vista Windows setting to performance (no effects at all). I can have anything else running on my second screen without any performance issues (playing movies, browser etc etc). Turning everything else off and just running EQ2 makes no difference.

Can anyone offer any help at all?

My specs are;

Qx6700 Quad Core OC, Striker II Extreme, 4gb Corsair Ram, 2 x GTX260 (896meg) Not SLI, 2 x 10K Raptors Raid 0, 1 x 24inch LCD and 1 x 22 inch LCD, Vista 32

I changed the Video Cards, Ram and Mainboard during the upgrade.

I think I found the answer by mistake.

You don't turn all of the fancy Vista Aero stuff off, you turn it to max!

I was showing someone my problem and to prove a point I went back into vista and set all the visuals to max appearance settings, full aero etc etc I then went into and EQ2 and my problem was fixed, no difference between window and full screen fps.
