I'm only level 49 but I'm beginning to see a problem with my power. In a group I seem to finish fights with 60-70 power. I usually cast my reactive and a stun whenever it is up (free heal). If the mob is hitting especially hard I'll supplement with a direct heal and toss on another reactive. My gear is not that great and my spells are not A3'd since I don't plan to do that until level 50+. So my power pook may be on the low side or it may be I'm not playing my class correctly. Thats why I've come here! What spells do you cast in a fight? If your role is solely to heal (meaning you have enough dps to do without Templar uber dps) what is your casting order? Is this just the nature of our class that we are mana intensive?

Its not One correct answer to this post to be honest. But I can say what my playstyle looks like.I have three main gear setups. One for solo that focus on Mitigation and melee dps. One Heal setup that just focus on add to heal crits and add to heal. And one in group DPS setup that focus on spell DPS.I have three macros so that I can change the gear depending on how the situation looks like.In a group I have 2 different play styles. One pure healing and one one pure dps with support healing. In a new group I usually spec for fully heal both in play style and equipment. After a while I get a hang if the group are good or not. If good I go more to the DPS side.In the Heal Mode I usually. Precast my group reactive and make sure that its always up and running. When It have just 1 or 2 hits left it high time to recast it. I second make sure my single reactive are up and running at the tank all the time. As soon as I can I cast my three debuffs to help out with the healing. After that I just make sure the reactives and debuffs are up and filling out with spot heals. I do not waist any power or time at all on casting offensive spells or doing damage. I don’t even stand close enough to use my hammer. I want overview of the situation and I don’t want any AOE hitting me. If the group seem good I can respect for DPS. Then I Make sure my group reactive are precast and maybe my single reactive to. Then I cast my mitigation debuff and go all out with my spells and make sure I am in range for my hammer to hit.Make sure you have drinks and totems to regain you Mana asp after fights. Yaulp are never used in Heal mode while it is always running otherwise.Hope that was to any help for you./Hugs Tash

Direct heals eat way more power than reactives. Group cure is very expensive for power, use single cures when you can get away with it. Try single reactive on tank and use your mark line and heal on mob death line to keep the rest of the group healed. For a fast killing group the heal on mob death is the most efficient healing I think. (I'm not looking up spell names for that tier)Do the heritage quest for your mana stone, you will use it forever.Buy or make some power regen potions.Buy or make some power regen totems. We are very power intensive and very slow casting. In the 70-80 level range you will start seeing a lot more options to counter those weaknesses. Before 70 you can counter the slow casting with the Int line AA a good bit.

As was already said, there's no right/wrong answer to this question, but here's how I play mine.

First and foremost I never leave home without a healthy supply of power regen totems. If you have a necro or conjy in your group, always ask them for a heart or shard whenever yours has run out.

Another thing that will greatly help you is to focus on your heal crit %. A heal that crits will heal for more. And that's not only direct heals. My heals have done crits off of reactives, off of the involuntary heal line, off the mark line, any spell that will heal HP has a chance to crit. The more crits you have, the less healing you'll actually have to do.

Only cast your direct heals if you really need to. Rely mostly on your reactives. You'll spend less mana that way, and can concentrate on other things like debuffing, damage spells, etc.

My casting order changes depending on what zone I'm doing. I don't usually use my group reactives, unless I'm in a total pick up group, and haven't grouped with them before.

1. Single target reactive, followed by Repent (you won't get this till lvl 80)

2. Involuntary Heal

3. Redoubt

4. Mark of _____

6. Supplicating Fate (I've heard of some who actually don't like this spell. Personally I LOVE it. It has saved my party's butts several times if there was a big pull, with aggro bouncing around. Get this at least at adept 3 and it really does heal for quite a lot)

Then if no other healing is needed I'll switch to nukes, Turn Undead, stuns, cures, whatever else is needed. Hit Manastone after every fight. There are also several items out there you can get with + in-combat power regen. Also as I leveled up, whenever it was available I always chose to increase in-combat power regen.

Heroic stuff dies so fast in a group that you wont have time to cast all your debuffs.Just throw up single and group reactive and then your group "heal when mob dies spell" and watch TV until next pull.I wish SoE didn't take the power management card out of play at 80. Managing power showed if you were a good templar or not.

Atragon, take heart with your power issue. At level 80, I do not take drinks anymore (unless raiding) and I do not use totems etc for power regen. First off remember your place in the group - heals; Let the dps do their job. Whilst a lot of time you wil be bored and sit and watch the group, your time will come when a roamer adds, or some wandering pet decides to add a for more to the fight. At this time the group will be thank full that you are still at 95% power, because you will need every bit of mana you have when the chaos starts.

A good outing will see you never go below 90% power, that is good pulling by your tank. In terms of spells cast, I find this to be very beneficial:

1. Reverence (52 only) get it adept III its the only level you get it and can be prebuffed,

2. single target Intercession (or its upgrade), do not pre buff this spell as it will pull agro to you,

3. Repent (level 80 only)

4. Mitigation debuff

5. Mark of _____

6. Involuntary _____

7. Healing Fate (group heal on target death)

If mob is going to die early then I will try and get the healing fate spell up before spells 5 or 6.

If a rogue dps pulls agro and gets hit, better to single heal them (less power use). I will generaly only group heal if three or more people hit yellow. I very rarely use the group reactive (_____ Intercession) as the power usage is not worth it.

Hope this helps

In group content you should hardly ever have to use either of your direct heals on the tank or reverence. Those are more likely on others in the group. (reverence is quite good cast on yourself or mages). Only on mobs that AoE (and these are very uncommon at lower levels), will you ever use your slow, power hungry group direct heal.
If mob is going to die early then I will try and get the healing fate spell up before spells 5 or 6.

If a rogue dps pulls agro and gets hit, better to single heal them (less power use).
wow, i really expressed that poorly didn't I. Antryg you are absolutely right and I do auto attack, casts MS, dots and smite, my point was aimed at the level 50 templar. I was trying (rather poorly) to press the point, that the primary role is to heal and conserve power and not use it all on nukes etc. power management was the important point I was trying to get across. I have found it easier at the higher levels with power to use more attack abilities. mybad for the picture I painted.

I note the different order of spells offered and will give it a go, thanks for the information. However, I note the use of the reverence spell on mages/yourself. i would have thought this an ideal spell on the tank as they consume power and add to their health it could only help.

Finally repent: I avoid repent early, as it not only wards for a heap but converts to a heal. If the tank is 100% health when repent is triggered you will not get the health benefit (therefore only half the value of the ward) so I generally cast this once the battle has started. Would be interested in your thoughts on this in why you may precast it.

Cheers

I agree with most of what is said here. I'm 78 so haven't had the chance to get repent yet.I don't precast though, as it INSTANTLY pulls aggro when the tank is body pulling. I haven't found I need to precast, even as the only healer in Maidens. As soon as the mob is body pulled I will cast my single reactive, as by that time a good tank will have initiated his taunt. I've been killed way too many times by precasting, even with very good plate armor, and the deaggro has a 5 minute timer. Plus its distracting to target myself and heal, when that time could be better spent debuffing the mob. If I ever get to a point where I need to precast then I will, but I just haven't found that need even as a single healer in the harder instances of the game.So...1) Single target reactive after body pull, but timed with tanks initial taunt. I will also cast the buff that heals the tank for power used, forget the name of it.2) Crown debuff3) Invol healer debuff4) mitigation debuff5) wis debuff/dot6) fate debuff7) DOT stuns (I'm a HUGE believer in stuns, with AA my debil is a 12 second stun with -25% resistability and a 20 second recast, INCREDIBLE for soloing, and reduces a ton of damage on the tank when grouping) I'll try to chain my 2 stuns, and also have my hammer knockdown for interupts if a mob is summoning mobs, healing, etc.9) If it's a long fight I'll start nuking at this point. Our DPS isn't that bad, especially against undead where we get bonuses. I'll only nuke if I have a LOT of power, no danger of adds, and the group has established a good rhythym. If it's a tougher scenario I won't nuke and will just hover over my heals.10) refresh any debuffs or dots as needed.Of course throughout the entire process I am keeping my single target reactive up, and the heal for power buff. Group reactives are also used depending on the pulls, the skill of the tank, the aggro on dps members, etc etc. Each situation is different.

I almost always pre-cast in grp and always in raid situations. Grp reactive, single target reactive, reverence and repent. I also cast Shield of Faith if we are dealing with arcane mobs. Once the mob is pulled I cast Inv heal.. repent.. mark.. and heal on death spell. If the fight is still going on, I cast reactives again. Usually I can get away with just having to cast a small direct heal if someone has dipped into the yellow and save the big direct heal for well into yellow and nearing orange (because of sudden big hits for example). Most of the time I can get away without using this heal too often. The power hungry grp heal is saved as a last resort if several of the grp are suffering.Definitely do the hq for the mana stone, and totems and potions are a must have.

Just to add to all the excellent advice given so far, it's worth considering that adept 3s use less power than app1/app4 spells.

Just my 2 cents worth.

There is no absolute concrete cast order where you will hit button 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 -- rinse -- repeat.

You will run into many varying situations and groups that will affect when you will cast certain spells. If you do pickup groups (which I do quite a bit), you will run into poorly geared tanks, egomaniac DPS classes, folks that don't pay attention, squishy casters, varying zone difficulty, etc.

At the end of the day, you will be judged based on how well you keep your group standing. The capabilities of the group you have will determine the strategy that you use. If I am in a group that is doing obscene DPS, I don't even bother throwing damage spells. I heal and throw Debuffs, trying to keep a heal buffer up on the group as they go nuts through the zone. If it is a more normalized group, I'll throw in as much dps as I can without risking other group members. I try to use direct heals as little as humanly possible because of their power cost, but will use them as needed.

I carry goblin totems and drink with me and have zero power issues. I am by no means a Templar "expert", but the above is what I have found by leveling almost exclusively in dungeons and instances up through the 70's and then doing instance runs since level 80.

I cannot speak on behalf of raiding as I have no experience in this area yet.

(Edited because I couldn't understand one of my own sentences)

Gear and spell quality definitely have an impact, but can be expensive when you're first starting out/lower level. A small fix that may help is the use of elixirs to boost your WIS. They are relatively inexpensive for lower levels on my server, and after buying a large stack you can right click and choose "auto-consume" (they last only 15 minutes each).

I can't remember if someone already mentioned this, but look for adornments or gear with +heal amount. Even if it's only 10 here, 20 there, they do add up, making your healing more efficient.

Once you hit 55, you will have this awesome spell called "Reverence." Using it, you will save so much power by not having to quick heal casters unless they are taking lethal amounts of damage. If you ever have more questions, you can send me a tell on the Crushbone server.

**EDIT**I read that the +heal on reactives caps at 100. Just FYI, if you're considering spending plat on adornments.
