Hello all,I have a brand-new top of the line system with all the bells and whistles which hangs/reboots when running eq2. The following are the typical failure modes that I've seen.1a) Video freeze: Whether I'm grouped in an instance / raid or I'm standing on the freeport docks going thru the broker, my screen will randomly freeze. Waiting 15 secs does nothing. My num lock/caps lock key do not respond. ctrl-alt-del does not respond. My system is frozen and requires me to press and hold the power button to force a hard reset. The system can be working well for hours, but after the first crash, the subsequent crashes will occur within 5-10 mins of each other. These video freezes never occur when I first log in but require me to play for at least 30mins or more.1b) Game artifacts after video freeze: This one is really strange. After I hard reset the system, when I get back into the game and the group / raid reinvite me, I see the people standing in place and not moving. But in reality, the people are no longer in those positions and are running around. Also strange, even though the people are standing in place, when they go into combat or use combat arts, their models go thru the correct motions, spells/arrows are flying off in the correct position of where they're REALLY fighting. It's just that they look to me to be standing in place and not moving. I thought that it might be something with my video card so the next time I had a video freeze, I pulled out my power cord out of my system, let the capacitors finally bleed off the stored power, then replugged in my power cord. When I rebooted my system and logged into the game, the people were STILL standing in place and all the strange behaviour continued. So, it doesn't sound like some information got stuck in some buffer in my video card which is causing the game to act strange. Also, after waiting some random amount of time (~1 min), my video will somehow "reset" itself and the people pop out and reappear in the place their REALLY standing/fighting.2) BSOD: Every once in a while, I do get a BSOD complaining about one of the DLL files. I believe that the start of the file is NVD....DLL. I can't remember it off the top of my head. It only happaned a couple of times and it was when I hadn't changed the option to disable auto-restart so that the BSOD will stay longer than a flicker of my eyelids.3) Random reboot during game play. Essentially, the screen suddenly goes black, then I hear the PSU click and then the typical boot screen shows up where it tells you the bios name and RAM size as it starts going thru the normal bootup sequence. This happens less frequently and I can't see any pattern of when it would randomly reboot. One last thing before I dive into the dirty technical details, I also play Sins of a Solar Empire and I've never had a single problem playing that game for many hours in a row. Not sure if that will help eliminate any potential problems. My system components are as follows:Mobo: EVGA 122-CK-NF68 nForce 680i SLICPU: Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.66GHzOS: Vista 64-bitVideo card: BFG 8800GT overclocked to 625MHz (I've tried downgrading speed to 600MHz and no change)PSU: Antec EarthWatts 500WI've looked into the everquest 2 directory, and I've never seen a EQ2_CRASH.LOG or CRASHLOG.TXT file. My EQ2_RECENT.INI file is as follows:cl_version_recent 18cl_username XXXXXXXXcl_autoplay_world Gukepilepsy_warning_seen truecl_show_voice_tutorial falseeu_merge_seen truecl_picked_configuration truechat_autoswitch_chat_type truecl_maximized falsecl_screenwidth_windowed 1264cl_screenheight_windowed 974r_performance 6last_selected_char_id 730692cl_movie_enabled falsets_hotkey_order 0 1 2 3 4 5r_performance 6cl_fullscreen falsecl_screenwidth 1280cl_screenheight 1024cl_screenrefresh 60o_max_farplane 300.000000r_fast_layer_min_distance -1.000000letterbox_frame_visible falsecl_textureshrink 3cl_charactertextureshrink 3r_texture_lodding_shrink 4r_bloom falser_update_procedural_textures falser_drawocean_quality 3r_envcube_updates 2r_reflections 0r_particle_priority 0num_active_spell_results 0r_particlesinreflectionsinhouse falser_particle_lod_scale 3.000000r_point_particle_near_plane -3.000000r_point_particle_max_size 0.000000r_light_priority 0r_max_lights 2r_light_spec falser_max_spec_lights 1r_light_bump_max_distance -1.000000r_min_dir_ambient_intensity 0.300000r_shadow_priority 0r_shadows_torch falser_shadows_characters falser_shadows_keep falsecl_lod_scale 2.000000cl_lod_tridensity 30000.000000r_ec_max_lod0 1r_ec_max_lod1 10r_min_anim_update_rate 0.600000r_anim_update_start 0.050000r_initial_point_weight 0.500000r_particle_cloth falseics_combatautoface falsesound_provider Dolby surroundspeakers System Defaultmaster_volume 0.700000vc_volume 0.810000vc_output_device Speakers (USB Audio Device)vc_volume 0.810000vc_mic_sensitivity 0.530000cl_filter_client_text falser_target_encounter_arrow truer_target_mouse_over_glow 0.000000con_version 0cl_show_quest_giver_icons_outleveled truetradeskill_showexamine falsecl_logchat truechat_show_category truecl_use_soga_barbarian_female truecl_use_soga_barbarian_male truecl_use_soga_darkelf_female truecl_use_soga_darkelf_male truecl_use_soga_dwarf_female truecl_use_soga_dwarf_male truecl_use_soga_erudite_female truecl_use_soga_erudite_male truecl_use_soga_gnome_female truecl_use_soga_gnome_male truecl_use_soga_halfelf_female truecl_use_soga_halfelf_male truecl_use_soga_halfling_female truecl_use_soga_halfling_male truecl_use_soga_highelf_female truecl_use_soga_highelf_male truecl_use_soga_human_female truecl_use_soga_human_male truecl_use_soga_ogre_female truecl_use_soga_ogre_male truecl_use_soga_woodelf_female truecl_use_soga_woodelf_male truecl_use_default_log_file true

Make sure your using the current version of nvidia's drivers for 64 bit VISTA. The NV part about the blue screen of death makes me think thats the problem or least one of them. The artifacts could also be caused by bad drivers as well as faulty hardware but since you can play another game fine hardware shouldn't be the problem. When my 7800GTX got fried it spit up ping triangles anytime it had to do processing. Be sure to uninstall the current drivers before reinstalling

Hello Beghauns,I did verify that the drivers that I loaded were the 64-bit versions. When I install different drivers, I've actually been a bit draconian. Whenever I need to try a different video driver, I completely blow away my OS and re-install with the new video driver. I really don't want to chance any possible video driver corruption. Also, I've been running with the NVIDIA performance monitor running. When I just have the OS running, GPU is running around 54C. When I load up EQ2 and just stand in East Freeport, GPU increases to ~61C. Since my room temp and graphic load fluctuate, I've been able to get the GPU to ~71C. I've seen the strange game freezes occur from as low a temp as 61C so I'm thinking that it's not a video card overheating problem. The video card is a BFG overclocked 8800GT, but I've slowed down the GPU clock from 625MHz to 600MHz and the game freezes still occur.Only way to get a stable game is if I install windows xp and all the associated drivers. When I loaded windows xp 32-bit, I was able to play 2 days in a row, 5-6 hour game sessions in multiple t8 instances without a single game freeze. I then blew away the os, reinstalled vista 64-bit and the associated new drivers and I started crashing almost immediately. Based on this, I really don't think it's a hardware problem but I really don't know what else I can do. Other than to throw away Vista and buy Windows XP. =PThanks

tbh , sounds like it might be a memory problem..with 64bit vista using all 8 gig ram you're getting freezes / crashing...With Xp 32 bit and limited to 3.2 gig you aren't....

Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 8.00 GB Total Physical Memory 4.00 GB

I am kinda curious why those two don't match unless msinfo is only 32bit even in vista 64, have never ran it on vista at home. wullaihuit may have a point try memtest and see if all the modules pass. And yea thats kinda overboard reinstalling windows each time you change drivers. Can also try pulling out 2 sticks and leaving 2 in dual channel and see if that encounters the same problem.

edit: as another side note I think I remember some people having problems with vista running more then 4gig without installing a patch from MS.

Hi,I've devoted so much of my time, taking out 2 out of 4 DIMM's is easily enough done. I'll give that a try later today to see if that would affect anything. I'll even swap the 2 that were taken out so that I can test all 4 DIMM's.As for the msinfo information, I believe that the application is only 32-bit and can only address 4GB during it's info sweep. That's why there's a discrepency. I called a friend who has a vista 64bit system in the same configuration as mine but doesn't have the stability problem and his msinfo reports the same thing. Just so this doesn't cause any undue excitement, the mfg of his internal cards are not identical to mine, when I mean similar, I just mean he's running vista 64, 8GB ram, and has a 8800gt card. Video card, mobo, etc mfg's are not the same, unfortunately.Tried doing a google on the patch you're referring to, Beghauns, but I wasn't able to find any info on it. There may have been a patch, but I just wasn't been able to find any reference to it.

I wouldn't blow away the system everytime you change drivers, there are some good driver scrubbers out there that do a great job of detecting and scrubbing it clean (some are payware but like $10 so worth it over a re-format).

Is your bios up to date? That is the most common issue with vista next to drivers being current and can cause Vista to not communicate as clear with your hardware causing BSOD's. Bios from Jan has Vista WHQL Certified so it's been through it's paces and is version P32

I looked it up a bit after my post, I think what I was thinking about with 8gb and vista was just during install people were having problems with it seeing all 8gb and there was some hotfix/patch to correct this the work around was installing with 2gb and then poping rest in after patch. This was prob included with vista sp1 which is what vista ships with now.

Your correct about the over 2 gig mark for install from vista 64 with the original release, and yes you did just do the install then run your updates and install the other ram on top of the 2 gigs.

Then again at that time there was issues with 4 gigs or more and SLI, and for some time 4 gigs or more for X-Fi sound cards. All those issues were cleared up over time however with updates and new drivers.
