Pretty D#$n Frustrated

So i spend another 3 1/2 hrs working on this signature.  Maybe i wasn't paying attention but as i saved it i guess it merged it all as one layer.  So when i closed it out and came back to work on it it was merged into one layer and i couldn't separate it to work on each layer that i had put into the signature.  I really dont know what i did wrong, but there has to be a way to save this in layers and not have to sit from start to finish, which with the difficulty of some of these things and what you people do i can't see that happening.  For Gods sake, that could take days.  Once again Paint Shop Pro Photo XI is my program, plz somebody enlighten me as to what i may have done wrong, thanks.

save it as a psp file hun, thatll keep your layers.. you can also save as PSD which is photoshop.. but PSP is best when using only PSP <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />

<p>You need to make sure to save your file as a ".pspimage" file.  Use "File" > "Save As..." Thanks, i knew there had to be a easy way i was overlooking.  So i guess another 3 1/2 hrs is no big deal, right, LOL.  Wait, as i work on it, everytime i save it as an entire thing, or save each layer?  I took a background and made it, layered another picture in, do i save it then as a PSP file or after i creat every layer?  May be stupid, but ofcourse i'm new.
