I'm currently playing a SK..

don't like it.

Want to reroll as a monk. I'm gonna be normally running with my guild vs. pugs. I'm not really interested in doing loads of tanking, but I can if needed. What place am I gonna have in groups?

Monks are a strong class to have. Every day norrath tanking is great, great fighter dps, and once you get to higher lvls and get some of the ancient arts like tsunami it will really be a good time. Not really much this class can't do for being a fighter. They do have very nice grouping/solo abilities.

Now for grouping a monk does make a solid everyday norrath tank, but if you do not wish to do that then you can be sub-scout dps, but a brigand/swashbucker will be a better choice if you are looking to just do dps in these groups.

so more or less.. monks are good spot fillers?

To a degree yes that is true. A monk can tank, cast an nice occasional heal/cure every 3 mins, at lvl 58 gets group feign death (long reuse timer) nice for a group save if it works, gives melee/spell haste to raid or group members, once monks gets tsunami cannot be touched with melee for 9-12 seconds depending on combat art lvl (very nice ability). Cool toons to play to say the least.

I've been building my monk for pure dps, but I always get invited to groups to tank. Which is fine by me because I'm used to it with my high guardian. But I always tank with offense stance and kill the mob as fast as I can with dps. It works great So far (currently level 49) I usually top parses in groups. I really enjoy playing my monk. I'd suggest anyone try out a monk!

group fd is the most valuable skill we have in single high level groups. when successful in avoiding a wipe, it prevents the group from having to start the zone over from the start.

we have alot of other skills and group benefits, but this one is what gets me invited to groups more than my tanking or dps abilities.

Yeah group fd is one of the better group utilities in the game. I do think that group fd reuse timer needs to be reset to about half of what it is now. Just my opinion.

Group feign death is not one of our best abilities. The recast is too long, it often fails, and all it does is save you a minute if you are lucky. Monks are good in heroic settings because we can tank and dps phenomenally. In my opinion devastaion fist is one of our best abilities for heroics.

Considering the majority of group "areas" are instances, the downside of a whole group dying is minimal. If I am at the bottom end of a contested dungeon, I'd rather guarantee my own FD over my group's - the reason being the personal FD is far better and I can get into a safe spot to res people. In reality, group FD is purely a means to reduce repair costs for your group.

I would say the most valuable (on a personal basis) skill we have is Tsunami, although variations of it are available to warriors and bruisers now
