View Full Version : Crashing to Desktop - DSL only (Please check traceroute)

  Hey everyone,

I am noticing a problem with our crashing to desktop / loading entity crashes.

I am assuming most of us if not a majority are having this problem due to connecting via DSL?

I have checked with various people at various sources and locations (east coast US / West coast US / Western Canada / etc) and the common denominator for the problem seems to be connecting via DSL which in turn goes through the AT&T network before reaching Sony Online.

I am sure many of you have checked the pathping and tracert as suggested by TSRs at Sony. I am wondering if everyone else is having this problem in the AT&T parts of the trace?

This is not a computer issue as more of a connection issue. Seems to only effect DSL connecting through the AT&T network before reaching Sony because I have also personally tested my connections (both DSL and Cable) and found AT&T / DSL connection to be the common problem. Also, noticing posts of other MMOs (ie WoW) where people have connection issues and tracerouted through AT&T on DSL connections.

I would like to hear if you are having these same issues and also connecting through DSL and tracerouting through AT&T. I am able to connect fine when I connect through my cable but I know not everyone has the luxury of having two different types of high speed connections at their premises.

hey just thought i would post this in case anyone doesn't know how to do the tracert

This requires that you disconnect any router hardware which may be in-between the affected computer and the internet connection (modem).** Please do not continue until you are certain that there is no router attached to your computer or your internet connection **

Next, open up the Start menu, choose the Run command, type "command" in the space provided, then hit Enter. If you're using Win2k type "cmd" instead of command. For Vista, "type command" at the search bar on the bottom of the Start Menu. The MS-DOS Prompt window should appear with the prompt, "C:windowsdesktop". For Win98/ME or Win2K/XP/Vista, type the following three DOS commands, one at a time, hitting Enter between each command, and waiting for the prompt to reappear:ipconfig /all > c:eq2info.txt tracert unrest.everquest2.com >> c:eq2info.txttracert najena.everquest2.com >> c:eq2info.txt For those indicating an issue with the French server (Storms), please include the following traceroute as connectivity to it varies from the US based servers/datacenters:tracert storms.everquest2.com >> c:eq2info.txtAnd for those indicating an issue with the German server (Valor), please include the following traceroute as connectivity to it varies from the all our other servers/datacenters:tracert valor.everquest2.com >> c:eq2info.txtPlease run these commands if you are using Win2k/XP/Vista(Only for Win2k/XP)pathping unrest.everquest2.com >> c:eq2info.txtpathping najena.everquest2.com >> c:eq2info.txtpathping befallen.everquest2.com >> c:eq2info.txt(This may take a few minutes to complete)Finally, upon completion of these commands, you will find a file labeled "eq2info.txt" on the root level of your C: drive. You can use the Find command from the Start menu to locate it.

I am having the same problems, my DSL is via TELUS which gets to Sony via Cogentco then to AT&T. I was wondering if it was a problem with AT&T ...

it is AT&T ! there has been an issue with them for over two moths now! I had a problem about that time and was getting massive pings of over 4,000 and huge packet losses! it took me weeks before I got any official word on it! and, although I can play eq2 again now after a forced 6 wk break I still get high pings when zoning! it seems that the problem has been partly resolved but not fully as I still get 100% loss on my pathpings info and that loss is always shown to be with AT&T!

AT&T here as well.

The AT&T issue with Compernium should have been resolved at this point. It seems routing through AT&T with other ISPs are still having an issue though.I will shoot an email to the AT&T contact I have and see if they know of any thing else. I will need path pings from you all though, so please post what you can. Open up the Start menu, choose the Run command, type "command" in the space provided, then hit Enter. If you're using Win2k type "cmd" instead of command. For Vista, "type command" at the search bar on the bottom of the Start Menu. The MS-DOS Prompt window should appear with the prompt, "C:windowsdesktop". For Win98/ME or Win2K/XP/Vista, type the following three DOS commands, one at a time, hitting Enter between each command, and waiting for the prompt to reappear:ipconfig /all > c:eq2info.txtpathping unrest.everquest2.com >> c:eq2info.txt(This may take a few minutes to complete)Finally, upon completion of these commands, you will find a file labeled "eq2info.txt" on the root level of your C: drive. You can use the Find command from the Start menu to locate it. Open the newly generated file (c:eq2info.txt) and copy and paste the information here.

Hmm, just got this reply from my support ticket today:

--

Greetings,We would like to inform you to please contact the Internet Service Provider(ISP) to open all the ports from 1023 to 65535 so that the game can run well through the game server. If you have any further concerns/issues please feel free to contact us again.Warm Regards,Andy C Technical Support RepresentativeSony Online Entertainment

--

Err, does having so many ports open pose a risk? It's not a coincidence that everyone is having this problem from so many different places that would suddenly require all our ISPs to open up over 64k ports in order to play EQ2. I thought we were starting to resolve the issue as it was noted there were problems with AT&T and Comporium and other ISPs. I just don't know how to respond to this.

I also did a cs ticket the same as you and got (eventually!) the same standard reply! my isp after I spoke to them said they did not or would not support port opening of this kind! it's clearly a problem with our route going through AT&T and it's with them that it should be sorted out!

That's insane. If my ISP would agree to open such a horrendous security hole, I'd change ISPs. Someone needs to talk to whoever authorized this "answer".

At the moment, I have been unable to log in with my main character Therendill for three days now. He crashed to desktop while in South Qeynos and I have not been able to get back in with him. I have been able to play my other characters, although I've gotten the "ran out of memory" crash from time to time.Here's my info, just to add to the confusion. I captured this right after crashing out for the second time in a row just now. MY ISP is TDS Internet and I have 3Mbps ADSL. As you can see, I have a nice connection with no AT&T anywhere in the picture. We go right from TDS to Sony's net.Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : gryphon Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : NoEthernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : CNet PRO200WL PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-80-AD-7A-4C-99 Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.101 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 216.165.129.158 216.170.153.146Tracing route to sdkeq2-05-01.everquest2.com [199.108.12.161]over a maximum of 30 hops: 0 gryphon [192.168.0.101] 1 192.168.0.1 2 h69-131-96-1.wltonh.dsl.dynamic.tds.net [69.131.96.1] 3 nycmnyhed01-p2-4.network.tds.net [69.128.250.25] 4 asbnvabrd01-gi0-3.network.tds.net [64.50.237.38] 5 exch1.asheqnx.sonyonline.net [206.223.115.90] 6 vl852.sdtermsbr-1.sonyonline.net [64.37.144.93] 7 vl831.sdkollsw-1.sonyonline.net [64.37.144.82] 8 sdkeq2-05-01.everquest2.com [199.108.12.161] Computing statistics for 200 seconds... Source to Here This Node/LinkHop RTT Lost/Sent = Pct Lost/Sent = Pct Address 0 gryphon [192.168.0.101] 0/ 100 = 0% | 1 0ms 0/ 100 = 0% 0/ 100 = 0% 192.168.0.1 0/ 100 = 0% | 2 55ms 0/ 100 = 0% 0/ 100 = 0% h69-131-96-1.wltonh.dsl.dynamic.tds.net [69.131.96.1] 0/ 100 = 0% | 3 63ms 0/ 100 = 0% 0/ 100 = 0% nycmnyhed01-p2-4.network.tds.net [69.128.250.25] 0/ 100 = 0% | 4 71ms 0/ 100 = 0% 0/ 100 = 0% asbnvabrd01-gi0-3.network.tds.net [64.50.237.38] 0/ 100 = 0% | 5 77ms 0/ 100 = 0% 0/ 100 = 0% exch1.asheqnx.sonyonline.net [206.223.115.90] 0/ 100 = 0% | 6 139ms 0/ 100 = 0% 0/ 100 = 0% vl852.sdtermsbr-1.sonyonline.net [64.37.144.93] 0/ 100 = 0% | 7 139ms 0/ 100 = 0% 0/ 100 = 0% vl831.sdkollsw-1.sonyonline.net [64.37.144.82] 0/ 100 = 0% | 8 134ms 0/ 100 = 0% 0/ 100 = 0% sdkeq2-05-01.everquest2.com [199.108.12.161] Trace complete.AT&T may be screwing up life for some people, but I'm getting plenty of crashes without any help from a bad connection.

is that pathping you posted a path to the server you play on? or is it to the one the tsr's ask for which is usually unrest? if it's not your server then try one for it! just use in the command promt pathping <server name>.everquest2.com and see what route you get then! I tried the unrest and najena one and my route didn't go through AT&T then but when I did the server I play on I found my route went through it then. it's just a thought

It's a good thought. All my misery happens on The Bazaar server. I've never tried doing a tracert to other servers.

Just did a pathping to The Bazaar. Results were identical to previous except for the final hop, which resolved to a different address at SOE.

Well, apparently I have been escalated to Tier 2 support and they are giving me the same "open up all ports" answer... I'm guessing I won't be loggin into EQ2 with my comp anytime soon since they seem to have mixed messages over there... they know there's an issue with AT&T and incoming network traffic, why keep asking me and other people with similar issues to request this from their ISP?

---

Greetings ,We can understand that you are crashing out of game as you try to zone. There are many a reasons that can cause crashing. You have specified that you facing this issue on all the computers in your home/apartment. Also I have check that there is lot of data packet loss in your network, when you try to connect to the game. This will require your to open a specific range of ports. They need to open all the ports between 1023 through 65535. This will include both the TCP and UDP ports. The range of ports to be opened may appear large, but this is very much required to maintain a good connectivity with the game. With regards,Glenn M.Sony Online Customer Service

---

Caymen,

Are you crashing out of game or to character select? If it's all the way to desktop then it isn't a standard connection issue. With a crash to desktop it is usually a computer settings issue or possibly the login rejected bug. If thats the case then pm either Trevor or myself with the station name and we can check for the login rejected bug(assuming you haven't done so already).
