few basic questions:

Is the main dps from melee or spells? Ive heard the term battle cleric used. Wondering if this means i get to run around with a big 2h weapon and smash people or what <img src="/eq2/images/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" width="15" height="15" />

From what ive read it is possible for a dps speced templar to still excel at healing due to the crit AA's

My main focus is going to be small groups / solo pvp and pve. Any insite would be greatly appreciated.

Ive also read that templars have problems with interupts / fizzles with there spell because they have long cast times. Has this been changed or anything.

sorry for the noobish questions, i played a warden to 45 at released and im sure there have been many changes etc. <img src="/eq2/images/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" width="15" height="15" />

For interrupts get Steadfast, and they are a thing of the past, just don't move. For DPS you can go either melee or smites. For melee max your double attacks and crits then load up on double attack and str gear. For smites you'll still want steadfast then the Int line, pretty much all of it maxed but int and the smite. Then of course all the smite AAs in the templar tree. I'd also try to get your T6 armor set for 33% faster casting. If you can, get the robe from Fear to get another 10% faster casting. With AAs you'll be at 33%+10%+14%=57% faster casting. You could also do a mix of both if you have a solid group and fight undead. Agil:4/4/8, Stam:4/4/8, Wis:4/4/8, Int:4/4/6/8. You will not have any end abilities in the Cleric lines but you will be able to do really nasty damage vs undead; just nuke between your weapon swings. Also, don't neglect your hammer spell.Between the two, it just depends on the person and the flavor that want. I've done about 1500 DPS with either style - but on average its about 700. If you have to heal, well, your DPS goes bye-bye.

anymore insite is welcome =)

Meh I don't worry about dps too much. However on SOH trash i'll tryto pick it up a bit to fight the boredom. A mix of melee and spells is good. I stick with AGI/INT/STA spec. STR is good for PVP and maybe solo'ing i guess. I never had much problems with interrupts soloing... i generally cast all my healy stuff prepull and just use relatively fast nukes when i'm getting hit. I spec'd WIZ for a few FTH raids back in T7 and really never noticed a huge bump in my dps. In MT group on trash 1500-1800 was doable. As for EOF AA's Blessings (for improved group/ self survivability) and Smite Wraths is the way to go.

I've fooled around with some 2H (though not the best 2h'd out there for dps) and found my dps with a one hander is almost / as good. If your solo healing an group or running solo the few extra hits that you avoid on yourself or on the MT (through Shield Ally) will help your reactives last longer etc. Less healing is required and thus you can spam nukes constantly without stopping to refresh a reactive.

I have a set of armor that I where when healing is an issue (heal crits/ overloaded heals/ parry neck piece/ block helm/ dodge hammer). I have almost another complete set of dps gear (higher INT/STR, +spell damage, spell crit, melee crit) that i put on when i'm trying to push the dps numbers. I've hit 2600 in SOH on trash in MT group wearing my "dps gear" and i'm sure there is alot of room for improvement.

the t7 legendary set was awesome and might still be a good option in T8 for dps. i think i've lost considerable STR and INT with my current armor. However, i've treid to collect as much reuse timer reducers/ spell haste gear as i can. I basically proc as much if not more spell haste/ reuse timer reduction than Time Compression atm.

Few other things:

Yaulp is good

Preheal so you dont' waste the first half of fight putting up reactives

Debuff ASAP on incoming

Stand where tank is pulling to so you dont' have to move on pull to be within melee range

Spam Matyr Strike, Divine Strike, Warring Axiom (or whatever it's called), and Symbol of corruption over and over in that order as they refresh (i actually ahve them all on the same macro button and just hit it over and over (actually mapped to my 5th mouse button)).

Use a weapon with higher delay and large damage spread. (the new MC weapons look nice)

I'll put my STR buff (and sometimes hp/skills buff) on myself if i'm trying to dps.

I'm not sure what level your are currently... some of the above may be irrellevant if you are low level and short AA. I would probably go INT first then either STA or AGI for aa if i was leveling up and then fill out Templar tree.

Well, yet another how to play question, maybe some guys of you can come up with a handyTemplars Guide to EQ2 - post RoK =) (where is my time when i need it)

But to the OP

Melee vs. Spell-------------------For me this mainly depends on what kind of items you can lay hands on.But basically, MELEEWe have 2 Combat Arts (STR-AA and STA-AA) which do damage, 3rd AGI AA - Double-Attack3rd STA AA - Melee-Crit3rd STR AA - Damage-procBlessings-Line-endspell (All Item-Procs up)AA to enhance our Miti-DebuffGet a good Damagespread-Weapon (Min Damage to Max Damage at least 1:5, the higher max damage the better)Get your armour toned correctly (does CA damage apply to autoattack???)

SPELLINT-Line gives you Crit and spellhasteWrathline gives you less mana costs haste and recovery and 20% DamageboostWIS gives you abnormal dps on undead. There are quite few outrageous items out there to up this gear(Actually 50% crit and 900+ Spelldamage costs no effort at all, just a few quests)

Maybe combine both(Really situational and should fit your playstyle, atm i am Spellspecced and we are talking about 2k dps solo on even con and3k+ on even con undead, running as dps class through coa =) )But thats just because i did not get some of the items i try to aquire to get back to melee/spell combined.

1h/2hSame answer here choose what fits.in Runny Eye 2.0 evading the AoE i am 1h with shield to protect the tank (Shield ally does make quite a difference in this zone)Solo i am experimenting with some VP Loot but as caster the staff from Anaphylaxie is quite nice, if you have choosen the healer macethe Staff from Jinisk is nice as well.

A fully dps specced Templar does not excel at healing (if you are quite the nitpick i am, than he doesn't even excel healspecced even though he is THE healer in eq2 and he is not only better but superior at keeping one target alive)but he still does the job as good as any other dps-specced healer. (there really is no instance out there that needs a heal spec but it definitely helps solohealing RE2)

When you get to 140 aa Dps spec/healing spec dosnt matter.

A dps specc'd Templar can hit 5k Nukes in Coa.

While a healing spec'd healer can critical heal for 5-6000 in the same zone, It depends on your play style.

Note the above all depend on equipment as well as AA's

If you always have full groups waiting for you, by all means go full healing - Since you won't be adding dps or being hit in most cases you can focus on what is important.

If you solo a lot or partake in small group play you may want to dps/partially heal to add some flexibility in the group.

Either way, Unless your planning for hardcore raiding, It's difficult to screw up a templar. Not impossible, but difficult.

-B-
