Well I'm having a bit of a problem,Prior to todays patch, had no problems running the game whatsoever.  I am able to run the patcher fine, all files are up to date, and I've even run the full file scans and no dice.  The patcher is running fine but after its done updating, I click on Play to start the game and I get a window popping up saying EQ2 Client Application has stopped working. I am running Vista, have made sure there isn't any firewall problems and have been running in admin and whatnot, and still cannot get the game to load up past the patcher.  Anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this, or a solution?Let me know if theres any more information I can provide, and thanks in advance.

Make sure you power cycle your modem/router, then try the following.   1. Run the Task Scheduler.  (Windows Key, type task scheduler and hit enter)   2. In the left window pane make sure "Task Scheduler Library" is selected.   3. in the Actions pane, click "create task."   4. In the general tab, in the name field type EQ2   5. Make sure the "Run with highest privileges" box is checked.   6. Go to the Actions tab and click the "New..." button.   7. In the "Program/script:" field, use the browse button to locate and select the EQ2.exe file   8. In the "Start in (optional):" field type in the full path to your EverQuest 2 folder.  For example: c:program filessonyEverQuest II    9. Click OK when you are finished and then close the Task Scheduler.  10. Right Click on your desktop and select New>Shortcut  11. In the "Type the location of the item:" field enter the following line schtasks /run /tn "EQ2"  12. Click Next and enter EQ2 in the name field then click finish.Once you do that you can go to the properties of your new shortcut and change the icon by clicking the "change Icon..." button and pointing to the EQ2.ico file in your Everquest 2 directory. Now just use your new Shortcut.

I have the same problem as Sargan...everything hunky-dory until update, then EQ crashes when selecting a character...ran the task scheduler as Trevor outlined, the program launches, then get the error msg "EQ client has stopped working".  Also running Vista, 64 bit

Make sure you add EQ2.exe and Everquest2.exe to your firewalls allowed list as well, and power-cycle your modem/router.

I'm having the same problem here.  I was playing the game fine on Monday night just fine.  Today (Tuesday) June 17, 2008 after the login in, the patch ran.   I get the message that <span class="postbody">EQII client has stopped working.  This happen after I log in and click on play so the actual login seems to work.  I have run the scan several times.  I have also preformed your instructions that you have posted here.   Nothing works I still get the same error.  I'm also Running vista.Thank you,</span>

right, its no doubt a problem with the EQ2 program itself, patcher loads up, download/updates fine, but when you hit that play button, the main game does not load up from that point, and you get the EQ2 Client application has stopped working window.Someone mentioned it but I also have vista 64, but I don't think that should be the problem with this either

I am having the exact same problem, I also run Vista 64, and have tried everything in these 2 threads. I have also gone as far as removing the anti virus software from my computer and still cannot log into the game. I also have a dual boot with Windows XP 32 and it will continue to crash after patching. I have also tried a full file scan still nothing. I am out of options. ok, i've been tinkering with things, and while I have not gotten it to work yet, I've noticed something else.  This problem is mostly related to clicking play as stated after the patcher finishes, and when the patcher starts up Everquest2.exe - here is where it crashes, for some reason the newest everquest2.exe has the problem.     I reinstalled eq2 last night, and soon as I did, I tried opening everquest2.exe alone, and by skipping the patcher the game loaded (although this doesn't do me much good because the game is still pretty worthless unpatched.)  So after patching overnight, it has brought me right back to the same problem as before, everquest2.exe is back to being broken.  fresh install everquest2.exe 'working' and patched everquest2.exe not working makes me think theres a problem with the file that was put in the patch yesterday for at least some users.

<p>I have this very same problem. I logged on with absolutely no problems 1 hour prior to the patch. After the patch im getting a "<b>EQ2 Client Application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" </b>everytime i press the play button. The info in the error box is pretty much the same wall of text Sargan got. Tried deleting all the usual ui and cache folders and the ini files and the everquest.exe but its not helping. Im not using a firewall.</p>

<p>I started getting this error as well after I downloaded the patch yesterday. I am running XP so I don't think it is an os problem. I had run the eq2mapping updater prior to trying to play yesterday. I had also started downloading Vanguard. I uninstalled map updater and ran a full file scan. The patcher works fine, but when I press play I get the error. </p><p>Oh, I also turned off my anti-virus and firewall. I was going to try and reinstall the game, but it sounds like that's been tried and wasn't helpful. </p>

still no response about this? Game hasn't even worked in any way since the patch, and still having problems.  Do the tech people even KNOW of this problem with the application running?

<p>Almost everyone reporting the issue in this thread seems to be running Windows Vista.  From the sound of it, it seems like Vista is blocking the download or your UI became incompatible with the game after a few UI files changed with the patch.  Please follow the steps below to see if they correct the problem.</p><p>Sometimes the Windows Vista security software can interfere with the patching progress of our games. In this situation, it might be Windows UAC (User Account Control) that is not allowing the game to patch correctly. For the purposes of security, you will only want this feature disabled for the purposes of patching and should re-enable it after the issue has been resolved. </p><p>Type msconfig in the search box on the Start Menu and press enter on your keyboard. 2. Click the tools tab in the System Configuration box. 3. Scroll down the list and highlight ‘Disable UAC' then click Launch. 4. Restart your computer. 5. Run the patcher.  You can enable UAC by following the steps above but highlight ‘Enable UAC'</p><p>You may want to delete the following files and folders:cache foldereq2_recent.inieq2_default.iniEverQuest2.exee q2.ini</p><p>As well as the character specific files, these will appear as such:Servername_CharacterName_EQ2_uisettings.iniSt ationname_characters.ini</p><p>To do this, please follow these directions:</p><p> 1. First look for your EverQuest II directory. You can find the directory in the default directory:2. Afterwards, please start EverQuest II to have these files re-downloaded by the patcher.</p><p>Thanks</p>

both of my computers are running with xp.. so this is not a vista problem. I also tried all of the above suggestions with no luck

I've already done what you suggested TSR-DanielH, I have tried loading up without UAC, as admin, I have removed and replaced the files from my exceptions list w/ windows firewall, and after doing all that, I have run a fresh install from discs, and repatched.   As with an earlier post of mine, I have tried running everquest2.exe with a fresh install as well, and it loaded up (although it loaded i didn't do much else since I can't very well play on an out of date game file) after doing this, I repatched the entire game. once all files were updated was when everquest2.exe failed to run (via patcher and straight from the directory.) I suspect that there isn't a problem with the file running on vista, being that the same exact program, although earlier version, ran with no problems, and the most updated version did not.  What else can be done to resolve this problem?  And what other information could I possibly provide to help things here.  Many others, and myself, been stuck out of game for a couple days now... Its time to fix the problem imo

Well, I've tried all the ideas here, and sadly nothing has helped. I'm now trying a clean install of the game from discs. It will take some time to download all the updates but I'll let you know how it works out. I was sure hoping Lacey's fix worked but it didn't. I thought maybe eq2mapper was the culprit, but I guess that would have been too easy. Again, I'm on XP...so not a Vista issue.  Looks like about 5 hours of patching ahead. I've got my fingers crossed.

Well I think I've just about reached my limit here.  I'm reinstalling the game one more time.  I've tried everything thats been posted here from the start.  I've stated several possibilities of what could be causing the problem. This is the last time I think I'll be trying to get this working again. The game has not been working for several people for days now.  I do not know what is causing it, but from what I can tell it does not seem to be vista, as XP users are having the same problem.  I've tried deleting files and whatnot and none have worked.  Games don't typically just work one day then stop the next unless something was added to make it stop working, this latest patch has done this.  The tech support here, while I do appreciate what you all do, I think this issue has been slipped up on.  The only thing that has been posted here has been a bunch of 'possible' solutions that normally would only work for someone having problems running a program for the first time.  If it worked fine before and nothing changed, other than what was patched in, my settings aren't wrong, its the files.  Instead of even trying to communicate the possibility that there COULD be a problem or that the possibilty of a bad file is being looked into- you've given more roundabout solutions. I'm very sorry for ranting in this fashion, I'm not normally one to do this sort of thing, but this is taking way too long and absolutely no progress has been made.

<p>I hear ya Sargan. I'm completely bewildered. I did a fresh install and still can't get the client to work. I've been playing since launch and haven't had any problems until this week. I'm running out of ideas. It's strange that there are only a couple of us with this issue though isn't it. I can get in to vanguard just fine. I might try a fresh install on a formatted hard drive just for the heck of it, but I think this will be a waste of my time.</p><p>By the way, my crash log looks pretty much identical to Palervon's if that means anything.</p><p>I can't imagine what changed to cause this error, or why it is affecting the select few of us. </p><p>I'm open to any and all suggestions.  </p>

So i have exhausted all of my options like most people in this post. It is blatantly not a UAC / Firewall problem. I also think we are all running 64 bit vista im not sure but i believe that most of us with this problem are. The thing that I found weird was, since i Run a dual boot system I was able 2 copy all my files to the XP version of my system and i still got the same error so it leads to to believe that something does not patch right for the Vista 64 system, causing it to fail. So now i cant play EQ on my new 2,000 dollar rig but i can play it on my old one worth about 200 bucks. Either way if there is no fix for this anytime soon whats the point in playing.Vondrack 80 Guardian <Legacy>Unrest Server

Sorry to hear you have the same problem Knox. It is NOT a Vista issue. I am on XP.  I can't understand with a complete fresh install how I am still getting this issue. I wish I could download all the updates prior to the latest patch and see if I could play then. I have to think something in Tuesdays patch fubared my game and I'm bummin'.

Removing the Read Only attribute worked for me as well.  I was having the same issues.  I could log on but once I hit PLAY - Blamo!!! I got the message "EQ2 Client has stopped working".  I had tried all the previous solutions to no avail.  However upon reading about the read only fix I examined my EQ2 folder and low and behold it was read only.  So I unchecked it and checked the box that said "apply to ALL SUB FOLDERS" and I was able to play on the Vista machine (the wife's machine).  The odd thing is I also play on my XP box (my Machine) and it didn't received this problem.  It's odd how some other XP boxes did.   So anyone know why the patch made some boxes change to READ ONLY?  Really odd.Hope you other guys can fix your machine it sucks not having you out there.  Double check that you unchecked READ ONLY and Check APPLY to ALL SUB FOLDERS on the EQII directory.  Good luck.

Whooppee!  The file read attribute change worked for me too!  Sargan, I changed the attributes on the main EQ folder by unchecking the read-only box...when I clicked apply, another box popped open, giving me the option to apply the change to all subfolders...wish ya luck!

Tried the read only last night and it did not work unfortunately, not to mention every time I right clicked it again, read only was magically selected again (then again that happens most the time anyway, i'm sure if you checked your EQ2 folder again it would be that way as well).  But either way I am almost downloading all the junk another time, and i'll go through the list of 'fixes' here and see what happens.

C:GamesSonyEverQuest II is the folder, read only does absolutely nothing, the problem is still everquest2.exe - nothing has changed since the first post (for me at least).  Yes, I've tried everything in this thread on 3 seperate installs, nothing is working.I've tried to say this before- I've ran the patcher just fine, there are no problems with the patcher, all the files download great, the play button comes up just fine, I click the play button, then the small window that says 'Launching game.' pops up (this is where it starts up Everquest2.exe)  and soon to follow is the error.  I'm not sure how else I can stress this, but I'm quite sure the problem lies with everquest2.exe - it will not run in any way, at all.   Whether I try opening it via the launcher or through the everquest2 directory itself, it will give me that same error.  this should not be so.I've tried running the everquest2.exe with the read only thing posted earlier, as well as running w/ administrator on, I've tried every firewall thing possible, I've completely turned off firewalls...  If theres anything else that someone here can think of to get the file to work, by all means please let me know,  without any doubt there was SOMETHING changed in the last patch with this file that makes it not run for some reason. that is the problem here.

<p>I've also noticed when I try to run the everquest exe from the eq2 directory the error it gives me is something like...application can't launch, this is probably due to a corrupt patch file you may need to reinstall....or something to that affect. Reinstalling was of no help. I'm thinking something certainly is hinky with the last patch that caused all this. <p>Whyllo,</p><p>If I understand correctly, the problem cleared up when you switched in a new hard drive?  That sounds like a possibility and it may be that the old drive had some bad sectors that were preventing the file from being modified.</p><p>DirectX should install to the operating system and it wouldn't matter which hard drive you installed it on.</p>

<p>Hey DanielH, </p><p>Yeah, that's what I thought about DirectX. </p><p>No, I didn't "switch in" a new hard drive. I broke out an old computer...much poorer gfx card, motherboard, processer etc. It had a 2 year old version of EQ2 on one of the drives. I launched from there with a 15 minute patch. The second hard drive in that system which I played on for about 2 years gave me client app errors, and was unplayable. That hard drive also has the "other" game on it whereas the very old hard drive does not.</p><p>I wonder about the DX compatiblity thing, like Minstar mentioned. I wonder what it is those of us with client app errors have in common. I'm definately in detective mode now <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></p>

I just tried doing system restore, I also tried removing all of the windows updates minus the service pack from my PC. Still nothing that was a good idea though, least something to give me hope. Either way i dont know how many others still have this problem but i havent been able 2 play EQ II since the patch. All i know is there is no point for me paying for a game that i cannot play on my PC and since every other game i have works i may as well play those.Vondrack 80 Guardian <Legacy>Unrest Server

Well luckily I was only trying it again from the free time to come back.  I'm just glad they broke it BEFORE I trusted them with a month's payment.  Usually when you've got customers paying for something like this, you either make sure it works, or make sure you have people able to troubleshoot the problem properly to get it to work.  This many days of downtime is really not typically acceptable for a MMO of this kind, nor are techs who do not actively try to help the customers troubleshoot EVERYTHING.  (and seriously, board members have helped more with the 'troubleshooting' more than the actual techs have, for shame). And to think, the Living legacy method of getting more subscribers almost worked.... almost.

<p>Well, I give up.</p><p>I can play on my old computer with the crappy video card but not on my newly built system. I could play on the new system until the last patch. System restore didn't work for me either, but I can only go back to early June since that's as old as the system is. I am not going to format and re-install everything including windows since everything else works just peachy....just not EQ2 anymore. My old system has all the latest windows updates and loads EQ2 fine.</p><p>I'm sticking with a DX issue or Video Card issue. My good system is using the latest 9800GTX drivers from May, and I did try a roll back/re-install on those to the March versions...no dice either way. I'm placing the problem on EQ2's latest patch, as all other games run fine including Vanguard. </p><p>I hope someone looks into this, because it's really annoying not to be able to play the game on high quality as my old system can't handle it.</p><p>Something happened with the latest patch to affect me, though I remember back to the old EQ days and the only resolution was just to sit it out and wait for your "lucky patch" to come through that fixed problems. I'm glad I can at least still play with another system which isn't a luxury other folks have, but this is at best a sad work-around.</p><p>/bleh</p>

Thats because EQ I could get away with it because there was zero competition. Now there is plenty and you have one huge game coming out soon. What i find comical is that the reason i quit EQ I after like 4 years of service was because my PC couldnt handle the game anymore and i didnt have a cash for a nicer one. Now EQ 2 after like 4 years i upgrade my PC to a more top of the line unit and it cant run it lol.Vondrack

Add me to the list.  As far as I can tell the recent update made the game unplayable.  After it patched, it crashed shortly after I clicked "Play".  Now if I try to launch the game I get an immediate crash and report to microsoft dialogue.  I'm running XP, so it's not a vista issue.  I tried the read only thing mentioned here, that did nothing, and it's not a setting that sticks as others have mentioned.Every update makes the game perform worse and less stable, and now an update that makes the game not run at all.  Clearly the clause in the EULA about there being no guarantee you will be able to play the game and are therefore not entitled to a refund of your monthly fee is there for a reason.  Sony apparently knows they make faulty software and want to ensure they're not liable for it.

Well hey, nevermind I guess.  I just discovered that U46 requires SP3 if you're running XP Pro because it just crashes if you only have SP2.  It would have been nice for them to TELL us that, like make it so the launcher says you have to update rather than just crashing.  Geniuses.

Ok guys, I think I may have found a way around some of the problems caused by the newest patch. I am running XP and have been having the problem with the update downloading, i.e. the launch pad stops when downloading the file vivoxskd.dll or whatever. Open your EQ2 file folder, find the file named Everquest2.exe file. Make sure that it's the 11.9 mb file and not the 716 kb file. Click on the file and it will open the game without using the launchpad. You will be prompted to enter your password/username. After you do this you will e taken to character select.  It's not a fix or anything, but its a way to log into the game and play. Let me know if this works for anyone else, because it's the only way I can manage to play the game atm without a real fix.

<p>Add me to the list, im in the exact same situation.</p><p>Load up eq through station launcher (although doing it directly from the 14mb exe doesn't work either) and i get the new green loading bar, followed by a black screen, followed by 'the eq client application has stopped responding'. This worked yesterday, and doesnt work today. I have tried re-downloading files (although not all of them), i have tried disabling firewall and antivirus, EQ is installed on a different drive to the system drive, its running as administrator, and i dont have the nvidia application (or anything nvidia) installed.</p><p>Intel Q6600 quad core, Intel DP965LT motherboard, 8gb ram, ATI 4850 512mb, Windows 7 64 bit (build 7100). I am also running 2 screens, and EQ is set to windowed mode, if that makes a difference at all.</p><p>Appreciating a quick fix!</p><p>Obi</p>

Unfortunately I had come back from a break from playing everquest 2 to find out that they were giving 14 days free. I wanted to start playing again but after two days of playing, I am now having this issue.. I have windox xp sp3 and nvidia 9500gt graphics card, was working perfectly before then logged out to get lunch to come back to it not working at all. All current fixes listed will not work for me. Deleting the patch.vpk file however did let me bypass and log into the game,.

<p>Curtosy of EQ2flames....</p><p>You need to turn off auto play... and run the patcher.. once its done patching, Go into your folder ... sony>eq2>paks, and delete the patch.vpk. Then hit play.. <p>Look, we should not have to reconfigure our machines because a patch broke the game. I should not have to check my BIOS or anything else. I have several MMOs on my computer and they all work fine. This worked one day, patched and now does not work. Like others, I have been a loyal EQ2 player since the game launched (was even in the beta, for that matter) and this latest patch did something that messed up the client.</p><p>I'm running XP as the OS, but it's not an OS problem. I've tried the various solutions mentioned here and nothing has worked. I have a 9800 GTX Black video card and the problem is not with the video card or the drivers there.</p><p>I can appreciate that SOE is trying to make the game work better and hence we get patches all the time, but as this thread so clearly states, something is not right and it happened with the latest patch. I trust SOE is looking into this, and I'm waiting for a solution from SOE in the form of a patch that fixes whatever they broke.</p>

<p>Well, since the last post was over a year ago, you can figure that the problem they were discussing WAS resolved.  Something that critical would not have been 'left alone' for a year.</p><p>I don't know how much this will help or not, but I was experiencing a similar problem.  I would use the Launcher, go through the login and the scan for new files.  Click PLAY and would get the same error message BUT...  my game would continue to launch and work just fine.  Aftere exiting the game, there was the dialog box asking me if I wanted to report the error or not...</p><p>I tried it all...  Deleted the cache, etc.  Did a defrag, even did a malware scan.  No good...  then  I hopped over to the nVIDIA website and saw that there had been a driver update not more than 3 days prior to the game update.  Downloaded the driver update, installed it, reset the machine and haven't had an issue since.</p><p>This isn't the first time a patch has caused issues with some machines and not others.  Many people here experienced the vanishing Quest Feather Conondrum where some people could no longer see the Quest Feathers/Books over NPCs heads but others had no problem.</p><p>If you haven't tried checking for new drivers for your video card, give it a shot.</p><p>Good Luck!</p>

<p>Had the same problem a few hours ago after a patch. Said it wasn't working and all that. What I did was I tried to run the Everquest2.exe from the folder itself, and found out I was missing a .dll file (how it disappeared, I have no idea) ... d3dx9_31.dll to be specific. So I downloaded it from somewhere on then net (googled it) and just copied it in the folder and voila, I got it working again. <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> Try it, it might work.</p>
