Im a wizard so dont normally have a pet that can pull. But I do have a L10 griffin pet, and I can also make tinkered pets, so I thought Id give it a try. But it seems like when I try to pet pull a mob that is within social agro range of another then they both come. Whats the trick to this?

You have what are commonly referred to as "dumbfire" pets. In order to have these pets, you must cast a hostile spell upon a target. That's why you are getting the social aggro. With a true pet, there is no hostile spell cast by a player, thus defeating social aggro.

When you strike a mob that is in proximity to another mob, the other mobs will come if they are social. The wizard spell pet counts as a spell, so the moment you summon it, it places a "buff" on the mob that is represented by the pet that runs from your position... so iow, its like a spell that takes its time to reach the target and on top of that doesn't do alot of damage. The other pets follow a similar attack plan. So you are actually casting a buff on the mob. This is not what conjurers and other pet classes do. they actually HAVE a pet, which means, the pet has its own life, so to speak. They are independant of the mob... ie, the mob can die, and you still have the pet, while for the other pets, as soon as the mob dies, the pet disappears, because its a buff on the mob, and not YOUR pet.

So... you can't pet pull if you are not a pet class.

And not all social mobs are immune to the pet pull trick. Some that are social will still come with friends when pet pulling. I always body pull around social mobs.

How to tell if you have a "real" pet versus a "dumbfire" pet:1. Do you have to target a mob to create the pet? You have a dumbfire pet.2. Do you have a pet window after summoning the pet? You have a "real" pet.

Pet pulling is all about range. You have to have a pet active that you can give commands to, either a charmed or casted pet as has been mentioned earlier.

Pet pulling does cause social aggro, always does.

The trick is to be outside of the leash range of the adds you did not engage. Mobs will follow you further if you have taken hostile action against it than if you just get social or proximity aggro. So when you pet pull, you set yourself outside the leash range of the adds, but inside the leash range of the mob you are trying to gank. Targeted mob comes to you, adds leash, you get a solo pull. Anyone with a ranged ability can do this except you have to run out of leash range while your runspeed buffs have been killed making you more likely to end up with all the adds. The advantage pet classes have is that they can send their pet into attack from a VERY long range so they can just stand there and wait for it. They also don't have to have line of sight after they acquire their target.

Iago

Pet pulling causes social aggro whether you use a dumbfire or a true pet. There are a few cases where a pet pull is the best way to go but only a very few.The main problem with pet pulling is that dps pets are fragile and if the pet dies on the pull you just turned a high-dps class into a low-dps class.
