So since my old one is now chugging up a lung or something it seems like nigh time to upgrade to thishttp://www.alienware.co.uk/product_...ode=SKU-DEFAULTI heard EQ2+multicore=no so will running it on a quad one just plain not work at all, should I just give up?

It just isn't a multithreaded program. It runs just fine on multicore, you just have to make sure you get the fastest core speed to get the most bang for the buck. My CPU runs at 3 GHz per core and runs the game very well. Quad core is overkill for this game and a very expensive upgrade if you're buying it for EQ2 alone. Not that it won't run on it, it just won't take advantage of its full potential. The system in my specs I built myself for under $1000, which includes a new case, keyboard and mouse. Alienware is very nice, but way overpriced IMHO.

Keep in mind that the actual clock speed of your CPU and your RAM will have the biggest effects on your performance. Multiple cores certainly wont hurt and will enable you to run programs in the background with less of an impact on performance. The actual clock speed is going to be the biggest factor, though.
